The Weight of Ink
The Weight of Ink | Rachel Kadish
An intellectual and emotional jigsaw puzzle of a novel for readers of A. S. Byatt's Possession and Geraldine Brooks's People of the Book Set in London of the 1660s and of the early twenty-first century, The Weight of Ink is the interwoven tale of two women of remarkable intellect: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just before the plague hits the city; and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history. As the novel opens, Helen has been summoned by a former student to view a cache of seventeenth-century Jewish documents newly discovered in his home during a renovation. Enlisting the help of Aaron Levy, an American graduate student as impatient as he is charming, and in a race with another fast-moving team of historians, Helen embarks on one last project: to determine the identity of the documents' scribe, the elusive "Aleph." Electrifying and ambitious, sweeping in scope and intimate in tone, The Weight of Ink is a sophisticated work of historical fiction about women separated by centuries, and the choices and sacrifices they must make in order reconcile the life of the heart and mind.

Extremely interesting historical fiction. Documents are discovered in a house in England. The book jumps back and forth between the people doing research and learning about what happened and the past when the letters and documents were written.

The author must have spent a decade researching this book. It was so interesting & dense that I was grateful I read it on my kindle so I could look up words as I read it. Had I known what a challenge it would be I might not have picked it up when I did. It was a fascinating glimpse into 15th century Europe & the Jewish experience. An incredible story. Definitely read it, but make sure you have the brain power available because it‘s rich & complex!

I loved this book, hated for it to end. Two parallel stories about a girl who is the scribe for a blind rabbi in London in the 1600s and the researchers who find the writings. So many things I didn‘t know about Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews, the plague, etc. Just terrific.

I wish I loved this, but it felt too long. I enjoyed the back and forth between the 17th century and present; I liked the storyline of historical writings; I loved the strong female characters. However, the book felt too long and there was just too much philosophical detail.

Cinfhen Yes, Yes and Yes!!!! Most of my bookclub loved this book but it was a little overdone IMO. Not sure I‘d recommend it, would you??? 9mo

Cinfhen I just read this for IRL bookclub. The ladies LOVED it but I thought it was a bit too much. There was a lot of attention to detail and the story had multiple threads. Credit to Rachel Kadish for bringing them all together and creating a real tapestry. Very interesting, especially if you like historical fiction 10mo

This book was just a bit too much. The Ester story would have sufficed; the modern day academia rivalry, the young scholar and his love life and relationship to Helen was just too much, too many stories to finish. I didn‘t care much for any of the characters except for Ester, so I would have struggled to finish this if it hadn‘t been an audiobook.

This book was a bit of a chore. I appreciate the vast research & amount of time Rachel Kadish poured into writing this book. The time period was fascinating, but it was a bit too slow of a buildup for me. I think some editing would have made a difference. Had this not been for bookclub I‘m pretty sure this book would have ended up in #hibernation 🐻 It‘s a so-so do to length, the writing skills and attention to detail are well crafted.

I bought this book on the high recommendation of @REPollock and I concur - an amazing book, one of the very best I read in 2018! I love theology and philosophy and am fascinated by the history of the Jews, so this book had it all for me. The imagined writings are just exquisitely done, the historical atmosphere tangible. In my opinion, a masterpiece and an amazing womanist/feminist novel.

I've enjoyed this book. Some people may find it boring, but I thought it was fascinating. I love learning about new cultures and I didn't know about the Jews in the 1660s of London and Amsterdam. I had never heard of Spinoza till this book. The characters value individual desires of learning. I thought the author used symbolism of the ink subtly well. How words can destroy, damage, or enlighten. Have to wake the princess to finish. #dogsoflitsy

This book has so much to offer. Lots of interesting history, of a period and people with which I had little familiarity. Interesting, complex characters. A story within a story, which I seem to be drawn to frequently. But it is the philosophical questions and contemplation that are the meat of this book. One of the most complex and satisfying novels I have read in a long time, maybe ever. 5⭐️ for me.

Haven‘t posted much this week because we have no WiFi and very poor cell service. I‘ve had much more reading time because the red tide hasn‘t abated. We can walk the beach, but can‘t go in the water. It is an ecological and economic disaster for this area. This book, with its philosophical bent, is doing an excellent job of engaging my brain and making me forget the dead fish on the beach.

Lynnsoprano @ValerieAndBooks It‘s rare for it to occur this time of year and for this long. The algae are usually far offshore and show up late fall or winter on the beaches, usually just for a couple of days. This has been going on for weeks, and it‘s affecting the economy of the gulf coast resort towns. 1y

I was so happy my library got this on Overdrive, but at only a few chapters in, I'm finding that I don't like the characters! Has anyone else finished this one yet?! The subject matter is right up my alley but just don't know about this one yet...

5⭐️. The Weight of Ink is a deftly woven epic story of self-discovery of two women. Ester is in the beginning of her adult life and looking forward, and Helen is completing her career, looking backwards over her life. Both women compellingly chose to focus their lives on scholarly work over love in spite of traditional roles for women. https://lharvey250.tumblr.com/post/172146716549/the-weight-of-ink-rachel-kadish-...

I loved many things about this book—the in-depth analysis of Jews in London and Amsterdam in the 1600s, the focus on academic research, the mystery of discovered letters from 350 years ago—but it would have been much more coherent had it been edited more carefully. The writing at times was contrived and fell flat but overall it‘s a fascinating look at history and worth the read.

Brilliant historical fiction set in London focused on two rule-breaking women, one pushing back against the patriarchy in the1660s and the other in our current day.

Both women are incredible characters, determined and driven to make their mark in a world that refuses to see them.

Highly recommended, especially for fans of People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks.
