When Laurence Fife was murdered, few mourned his passing. A prominent divorce attorney with a reputation for single-minded ruthlessness on behalf of his clients, Fife was also rumored to be a dedicated philanderer. Plenty of people in the picturesque southern California town of Santa Teresa had a reason to want him dead. Including, thought the cops, his young and beautiful wife, Nikki. With motive, access, and opportunity, Nikki was their number-one suspect. The jury thought so, too. Eight years later and out on parole, Niki Fife hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killed her late husband. A trail that is eight years cold. A trail that reaches out to enfold a bitter, wealthy, and foul-mouthed old woman and a young boy, born deaf, whose memory cannot be trusted. A trail that leads to a lawyer defensively loyal to a dead partner--and disarmingly attractive to Millhone; to an ex-wife, brave, lucid, lovely--and still angry over Fife's betrayal of her; to a not-so-young secretary with too high a salary for too few skills--and too many debts left owing: The trail twists to include them all, with Millhone following every turn until it finally twists back on itself and she finds herself face-to-face with a killer cunning enough to get away with murder.

One of my neighbors has this side door and I always imagine Kinsey living here 🙂 read this series when my kids were little during naptime, often getting the large print editions from the library for easier knitting while reading. Think I'm due for a reread. Hard to believe the alphabet will never be finished 💔

I liked the story and it was a good length for a mystery, but I didn‘t see anything that put this above any other mystery. I think I will have to continue the series to see if it gets better? Not terrible, just not a standout for me.

My current incomplete collection of Alphabet Novels! I am kind of miffed that V, W and X are brand new...there is just something about the older paperback editions, which was all bought in second hand bookstores! They have their own stories to tell! And of course the new editions are not the same size as the rest😒

I expected to merely get through this, not absolutely love it!! Kinsey is my kind of smart ass & I respect a character who just doesn't really like people. I laughed out loud several times! It was hard to put myself 36 years back in a technology free California, though. No Google, no cell phones, credit card imprints, no Mapquest. LOL, I'm looking forward to continuing this series!

Why oh why did it take me so long to meet Kinsey Millhone? Grafton's series has been on my radar for what feels like forever and I've owned this book for a couple of years. Finally picked it up last week and thoroughly enjoyed getting to spend some time getting to know Kinsey and following her investigations. I enjoyed her snark and look forward to seeing the development of her character over the course of the series.

PenguinInFlight I‘m decided to reread the series this year (I‘m currently on K) when Sue Grafton passed, and I still absolutely love it! So glad you‘re enjoying it too! ☺️🤗💜 2y
rubyslippersreads One of my all-time favorite characters! 2y
Suet624 I‘ve never read her books but you‘re tempting me to. 2y
See All 16 Comments
ReadingSusan I started reading these years ago and for some reason stopped but I have them all. I just need to reread them. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I love Kinsey, although it now has a historical aspect! I first listened to the audiobooks (narrated by the incomparable Judy Kaye, who IS my Kinsey) in the early 90s. I still haven‘t finished the series. I don‘t think I want it to be over. 2y
megt @PenguinInFlight it‘s a good series opener! I‘m terrible at finishing long running series (especially mystery) once I start them, even if I really enjoy them. But I think I‘ll be returning to Kinsey very soon! 2y
megt @rubyslippersreads she‘s a lot of fun! I can‘t wait to spend more time with her! 2y
megt @Suet624 if you‘re a mystery fan I think it‘s definitely worth giving it a try! 2y
megt @ReadingSusan I do that a lot with series, especially mysteries. I can think of 3 or 4 series off the top of my head that I need to get back into! 2y
megt @BarbaraTheBibliophage she‘s such an awesome character! And I love that the books are of their time. It‘s one of the aspects I‘ve enjoyed about the Alex Delaware novels by Jonathan Kellerman (at least the ones I‘ve read so far!). When I bought this a couple of years ago the book seller recommended that I try the series on audio, too! I can already picture myself doing an audio reread. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @megt I listened to a lot of those Alex Delaware novels too! But after too many thrillers, legal and police procedurals, and mysteries I had to stop. It all just got too gruesome and close to reality (at least potentially). That‘s another reason why some of the last books in the series go unread. I only read them every once in a while. Of course, now I‘m reading political nonfiction. Not much better, right? 2y
ReadingSusan @BarbaraTheBibliophage that‘s why i stopped the In Death books about seven years ago. They were giving me nightmares. Now the news just does that sooooo 2y
megt @BarbaraTheBibliophage @ReadingSusan yes that‘s definitely a problem for me, too! I love the genre but need to mix it up with other things. Yet, I could probably spend all day every day watching true crime tv shows. I think there‘s something about being really immersed in the gruesome stuff stuff in the pages of a book. 2y
kspenmoll Read Sue Grafton over the years- wonderful protagonist! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @megt @ReadingSusan I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who‘s affected by this stuff! 2y
rubyslippersreads @BarbaraTheBibliophage I feel the same way about finishing the series. 😊 2y

This seemed a good overall introduction to the character and the series, but by the end of the book didn‘t feel as if I yet knew her fully. The book was okay but not totally blown away with it, but this is sometimes the way with first books in a series. I will carry on with the series to see how it develops. 3.5 ⭐️

TrishB I‘ve only read the first one too! I have 3 more but just didn‘t feel like picking them up. Will wait and see what you think of some of the rest of the series. 2y

I have a great big soft spot for the alphabet series. I‘ve read the bulk of the series over the past 15 years, all out of order, and I was happy to finally see where it all began.

Kinsey in this book isn‘t quite the Kinsey I‘ve gotten to know through the rest of the series. This was definitely a first pass at the character, it felt a little unformed.

Ultimately, it was a fun read and it kept me entertained, which was what I wanted from it. 3⭐️

⭐️⭐️⭐️Pretty average and not very original, but it satisfied my craving for a female PI book. I actually really enjoyed Grafton's writing style, the book was the perfect length for its subject matter, and I was really into the ending. The characters and overall plot were a bit dull though.

🔹Sue Grafton‘s Alphabet series. I just love how much Kinsey achieves in such an old school way. Plus these books were my intro to audiobooks. Love Judy Kaye‘s voice.
