Jane of Lantern Hill
Jane of Lantern Hill | L M Montgomery
Jane and her mother live in a gloomy old mansion, where their lives are ruled by her ovebearing grandmother. For most of her life Jane has believed that her father is dead. Then, one dull April morning, a letter comes. Not only is her father alive and well, but he wants Jane to spend the summer with him on Prince Edward Island. For a blissful summer she lives at her father's cottage on Lantern Hill, making friends, having adventures and discovering that life can be wonderful after all. And she dares to dream that there could be such a house where she, Mother and Father could live together without Grandmother's disapproval - a house that could be called home.

This is another L.M. Montgomery book I don‘t remember ever reading before, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it today. Yes, it was a bit predictable and the quick resolution at the end was a bit unsatisfactory, but it also included the humor, variety of characters, and descriptions of nature that I love about Montgomery‘s writing.

Oh, Jane was a delight! So many classic L.M. Montgomery themes: the overbearing relatives who don‘t understand the delightful child in their care, the romantic quarrel/misunderstanding, quirky and lovable supporting characters in a rural setting, and lovely descriptions of PEI‘s natural beauty. And of course the ending was not surprising, but I loved it all the same! Looking forward to the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead discussion next Saturday!

I drew a random title from the windowsill pile to break up my Lunar Chronicles reading and was quite happy with this month's #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead was picked. This is a childhood favorite that I hadn't read in decades and I was glad to have the nudge to pick it up for a reread!!

Jane actually holds up pretty well over time. This and The Blue Castle are two of my favorite Montgomery's, and they have some similar themes of a dreary home life ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) at the beginning of the book and the eventual escape to a more independent and fulfilling life. Jane gains confidence as she learns to embrace what she loves. She does seem a bit young to do all the things she does, but her sturdy can-do attitude, strong sense of justice, and delightful sense of humor once again won me over. There are so many fun side characters sketched in just a few perfect sentences as well. As an adult, I wish that ⬇ 5d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the ending was a little less abrupt, but you can't have everything!

My childhood copy of this book disappeared so I was forced to order this lovely Virago edition. When it arrived it screamed for a reread and I was so pleased that I loved it every bit as much as I did as a child. When the father Jane doesn‘t remember sends a letter to the bleak home she shares with her mother and grandmother demanding she spend the summer with him she doesn‘t want to go. However when she does she finds a new world of happiness.
