Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day
Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day | Seanan McGuire
56 posts | 44 read | 39 to read
When her sister Patty died, Jenna blamed herself. When Jenna died, she blamed herself for that, too. Unfortunately Jenna died too soon. Living or dead, every soul is promised a certain amount of time, and when Jenna passed she found a heavy debt of time in her record. Unwilling to simply steal that time from the living, Jenna earns every day she leeches with volunteer work at a suicide prevention hotline. But something has come for the ghosts of New York, something beyond reason, beyond death, beyond hope; something that can bind ghosts to mirrors and make them do its bidding. Only Jenna stands in its way. Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day is a new standalone urban fantasy novella from New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Another sharp little novella from Tor.com, most of the book focuses on the premise that some people die before their time, those people become ghosts, and those ghosts can take years off a human's age, add it to their own, and cross over when they reach the age they were destined to die. But this exchange can go both ways, and ghosts can be trapped and forced to take years against their will. It's a pretty cool idea, but I would have liked more.

JazzFeathers I agree. The idea was awesome, still the story didn't satisfy me. 3mo

@TheReadingMermaid you are one of the most thoughtful people I've ever known. Thank you for this surprise package of #LitsyLOVE!
I've been coveting this book. I love all the goodies and now I know how to stuff my book for the #Mysterymessageswap 😀
Its such a lovely idea.
I really loved your poem, the colorings and drawings, and the bookmark. Everything. This came at a perfect time as I was sick AGAIN this week. Thank you for your kindness.

TheReadingMermaid Oh sweetie I'm so glad that you liked everything. I drew that shark for you because sharks make me think of you now because of The Meg lol I drew that from a photograph of a real life shark. The poem I was hoping would inspire you to do a little self care 😉 and the bookmark I saw and it just totally made me think of you 😘 I hope you enjoy the book it is so cute ❤️ 5mo

TheReadingMermaid Right? It's such a good book. Unfortunately the first copy that I received in a used book swap ended up missing an entire section inside it. Tragic yes, but I have been repurposing the book into art. I have been making some really cool things with it! 5mo
MaleficentBookDragon @TheReadingMermaid I just realized why the peacock bookmark looked so familiar. It's from Cracker Barrel. Every time I went in there I'd pick it up but never get it. Thanks again. I 💚💜💙 it. 5mo

OMG you guys.... I finished a book!!! I ACTUALLY FINISHED AN ENTIRE BOOK!!! 😲😲😲 This is the first book I've read since being released from the hospital and I couldn't be happier!!!!
This book was the epitome of short and sweet. It had horror elements but was not scary at all. Perfect for a quick read for anyone who enjoys dark fantasy.

I‘ve heard mixed things about this novella, but I really enjoyed it. Short and a little bittersweet, it flowed really well once I got into the rhythm. I sort of want more in the universe.

I really enjoyed this one by Seanan McGuire. I listened to the audiobook version and it was well done like her Wayward Children series. I liked the world the author built and how the story came together.

I think this should have been expanded into a larger body of work. The reader is left playing catch up with the witch. It‘s a nice story though.

@thebluestocking Thank you so much for the bookmark!! It‘s amazing. The book....Just fair warning @wanderinglynn @OddBookishBee some of my comments are a little cynical, so please forgive. I think this book would have been a better 6-700 page book where she really expounds on every character mentioned in this book. It almost felt preachy to me. Mixed in with tell not show did not make for my favorite Seanan McGuire. #LMPBCGROUPJ.

Reggie P.s. this is off to you tomorrow @wanderinglynn and @thebluestocking I got the other book last week. Thank you. 13mo

I was intrigued by the premise of this book: people who die sooner than they were meant to must stay on earth as quasi-humans until they reach their dying day. But I never quite got a firm grasp on the world and its rules, and the plot and characters were underdeveloped. This was one of those rare cases where I wished the book was longer.

What a fun ghost story with a different twist.
The ghosts of NYC have disappeared, and a ghost & a witch team up to solve the mystery. It‘s thin, and the villain isn‘t developed at all. But for 180 pages and 2 hours of your life, it‘s a fun ride.

"Magic is real. Once magic is real, nothing is entirely out of the question."

A wonderful short novel from one of my favorite authors. Jenna is a ghost who works at a suicide hotline in Manhattan, where she's resided for 40 years since her death in small town Kentucky. When the ghosts of Manhattan go missing, she must uncover what has happened & why.

I loved this ghost story where the main character is the ghost of a suicide victim who volunteers at a suicide watch centre.. That's pretty twisted but cool. I like that there are witches too and a mystery surrounding missing ghosts. I felt the end was too easy and felt like this would have worked better as a full length novel. All the same, I really enjoyed it.

Lazy morning curled up finishing the last few pages of novella 6 for the #7in7readathon. I turned back to Seanan Maguire as I want so badly for there to be more Wayward Children novellas. This wasn't associated with that series, but it was lovely to read an atmospheric ghost story in her voice. Not perfect, but gorgeous and intriguing. (🌽🌽🌽 1/5 out of 5 corn ears.)

If I get through one more Tor.com novella after work today, I'll hit 7!

I've never been a huge fan of short stories or novellas, too often I feel like I want more. Not so with Seanan McGuire. She packs so much heart and character and imagination and plain great writing into a couple of hundred pages that her work is perfectly balanced. Nor is she afraid to tackle big issues and hard-hitting topics. This is 21st century fantasy as it should be, pointed and powerful.
