The Hangman's Daughter
The Hangman's Daughter | Oliver Pötzsch, Lee Chadeayne
Magdalena, the clever and headstrong daughter of Bavarian hangman Jakob Kuisl, lives with her father outside the village walls and is destined to be married off to another hangman's son--except that the town physician's son is hopelessly in love with her. And her father's wisdom and empathy are as unusual as his despised profession. It is 1659, the Thirty Years' War has finally ended, and there hasn't been a witchcraft mania in decades. But now, a drowning and gruesomely injured boy, tattooed with the mark of a witch, is pulled from a river and the villagers suspect the local midwife, Martha Stechlin. Jakob Kuisl is charged with extracting a confession from her and torturing her until he gets one. Convinced she is innocent, he, Magdalena, and her would-be suitor to race against the clock to find the true killer. Approaching Walpurgisnacht, when witches are believed to dance in the forest and mate with the devil, another tattooed orphan is found dead and the town becomes frenzied. More than one person has spotted what looks like the devil--a man with a hand made only of bones. The hangman, his daughter, and the doctor's son face a terrifying and very real enemy.  Taking us back in history to a place where autopsies were blasphemous, coffee was an exotic drink, dried toads were the recommended remedy for the plague, and the devil was as real as anything,The Hangman's Daughteris the rollicking start to an exciting new series of historical mysteries, bringing to cinematic life the sights, sounds, and smells of seventeenth-century Bavaria, telling the engrossing story of a compassionate hangman who will live on in readers' imaginations long after they've put down the novel.

Nearly 2 hours into #24in48 (I forgot to start my timer until almost 10 minutes had passed)
Not a huge fan of the writing style so far, but the story has my attention so we shall see.
Time to rest up for tomorrow's binge read. See you in the morning!

What I liked best about the book was the setting; seventeenth century Bavaria, Germany. I also found the main characters to be likable. Jakob Kuisl, the Hangman, his daughter Magdalena, and the young physician Simon. The story is a murder mystery in small town in which witchcraft is still believed and healing potions are suspect. The epilogue states the novel was inspired by the author's genealogy and he tried to stay true to history.

I really wanted to like this book. The story seemed interesting but something about it was off. It felt too modern for a book that takes place in the 1600s. It also dragged on too long. I wound up skimming over whole pages just trying to get to the end, and I never do that. I‘ve been in a reading rut and this was not the book to pull me out of it.

I ended up enjoying this, but it was uneven overall. I felt like it couldn‘t decide which genre it wanted to be—historical, murder mystery, suspense, hints of the supernatural but not—I‘m for genre mashups, but it felt muddled. The writing felt awkward as well, but I think that was a translation issue. The clues to the mystery were a bit clumsy, but the characters were interesting & I might pick up the next book to see how they develop further.

BarbaraJean Book 5/12 complete for #bookfitnesschallenge! Thank you to @TheReadingMermaid for the book club pick this month, motivating me to read some of those free World Book Day downloads from Amazon! Otherwise this would probably have sat on my Kindle for who knows how long! 2mo

I needed to switch things up, so I decided to try out this one that‘s been in my Kindle library for a long time. I liked the setting, history, and characters, but the “mystery” was rather predictable and the prose was sluggish. Maybe it was a translation issue or maybe the original was just as chunky, but it didn‘t quite grab me. I did love the illustrations though! I‘d like to read more ebooks with interactive graphics.

@julesG any interest to you?

julesG I do not want to talk this book down. You liked it and that is great. I flicked through it a long while ago when it was coming out in German and since I am a member of the #HistoricalFictionInaccuracyAnnoyanceSupportGroup I dismissed it. I couldn't handle the inaccuracies that I noticed upon skimming the book. 6mo
jenniferw88 @julesG fair enough - I would be the same with 18th Century England! 6mo
julesG It's ridiculous how annoying little things can be, don't you think? But it's there. It's as if they forgot to hide a telephone box in a period film. (or the wristwatch in Ben Hur, though this one is funny meanwhile) 6mo

jenniferw88 @julesG definitely! 6mo
Scochrane26 I like this series but still haven‘t taken the time to read past the 2nd one. A friend has read all of them. 6mo
DGRachel You would think an author would do their research first. I‘m with you @julesG on how annoying some of those things can be. It‘s like getting a splinter in your hand and having that wound get infected. There were two books last year that made me rage-y over what most people would consider minor discrepancies. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6mo
julesG @DGRachel May they take artistic liberties, but please disclaim them. 6mo
GingerAntics @DGRachel I have that probably with some books. “It‘s just a little thing” or “this isn‘t a history book” or “you‘re obsessed with that.” Nope, I‘m just an historian of that time and that place and I‘m telling you half this book would not and could not happen. No, I‘m not giving it another chance when I‘m “in a better place” because the only other place I could be that would make me read it is if the history magically changed. 6mo
LiztheBibliophile I loved this book. The fictional part in "historical fiction" doesn't bother me, as long as there is a great story and great writing. It's the same reason I loved 'The Other Boleyn Girl'. Accurate it is not, but what a great way to tell a story and maybe get people to follow a trail to more accurate history. 6mo

A few Littens have posted about this book recently and then one of the sequels was on sale during the Black Friday Kindle-palooza, so I put this reread at the top of my “first read of 2019” list. There‘s something to be said about knowing you‘ll enjoy the first book of a new year. 😄

I love these books for not glossing over social, medical, & political issues of the time/place (mid 1600s Bavaria), while also giving you a strong mystery to solve.

A perfect book for this time of year, this is the first in the Hangman‘s Daughter Mystery series. Set in Bavaria in 1659, it follows a hangman and his family, along with the lovelorn physician. Someone is murdering children, and witchcraft is suspected. There are some graphic bits - torture scenes, for example. But, I liked this for something different.

Robothugs 🤔 Not sure about the Litsy rating. I think some people expect it to be faster paced than it is, so they don‘t enjoy it. At least that‘s a main complaint I‘ve on reviews. I enjoyed this well enough but either the author or the translator dropped the ball on a prose level. It‘s VERY interesting to see an executioner portrayed as the hero of the story, and I had never heard of erdstalls before, so I learned something from this as well. But I don‘t plan to continue the series.

Susanita I tried to read this a few years ago and just couldn‘t get into it. IIRC it‘s a little bit of a chunkster at least for the genre. 10mo
Megara I started reading this, but got distracted by other books. 😅 I plan to finish it someday... 10mo
twohectobooks @Susanita it‘s a bit over 400 pages but I found it quite an easy read at least! And I was reasonably interested in the mystery, it just didn‘t blow me away enough to continue. 10mo

Mehso-so

Beautifully illustrated but very poorly translated and not as well written as it becomes later in the series. I am starting at the beginning of a series that I know has two great books in it: #6, The Play of Death, and (❤️❤️❤️) #7, The Council of Twelve. So I‘ve fallen in love with the Kuisl family and wanted to start with them at the beginning. This Kindle in Motion book has some animated illustrations! Here is a still one: Magdalena and Simon.

LeahBergen I couldn‘t get past the writing in this first book (and I really thought I‘d love this series) 😬 12mo
jillrhudy @LeahBergen How about I read the series and tell you when the author starts writing well and the translator stops sucking? 12mo
jillrhudy @LeahBergen I don‘t know what happened because the same guy translated book 6 and it‘s great 12mo

Bailedbailed

Didn't think a book entitled THE HANGMAN'S DAUGHTER would barely include said woman, and would spend a lot of her airtime talking about her boobs, having her place men's hands on her boobs for no apparent reason, and never really consider her interiority. I wanted to love this book, instead i bailed at the 1/4 point. Woof.

I should be grading. Instead I'm listening to one book and buying others.

Yo this is awesome. You can‘t see on the picture but this kindle book has awesome animation in it! And it‘s currently on amazon right now for $2! Check it out!

jillrhudy I just got that one but I dithered when it was $1.99 and ended up paying full price! Love the animation. 12mo
