Here are my selections for #bookspin and #doublespin for July. I have been doing well these last few months reading one or both selections, but June‘s attempt at #bookspinbingo fell short. Hence just the 20 books instead of the ambitious 25. I can always add free choices for 21-25 if I choose, right @TheAromaofBooks ? 😁

TheAromaofBooks Absolutely!! Also, I LOVE the Brother Cadfael series!! 2d

I might come back to this later, but for now it‘s slowing my momentum. When reading doesn‘t sound good, it‘s time for me to pick something else. I‘m glad DNFs count for #bookspinbingo (not that I‘m likely to achieve it this month).

All right #LMPBC #GroupV I‘m leaning towards the tagged book for my contribution to the group, and here are several other choices I have on hand. Anyone have any opinions either way? What say you?
@BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @TheAromaofBooks @fredthemoose

fredthemoose Sounds great to me! 1w
TheAromaofBooks I'm good with the tagged book. I also would love to read Scarlet Pimpernel as it has been soooo long since I read it in high school!! A couple of the others are a smidge on the long side for #LMPBC - generally, less than 400ish pages is recommended to help make sure everyone can read it in a month!!! 😊 1w
jimfields3 @TheAromaofBooks That was a very close second for me, so I‘ll choose that one, barring any objections from @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks and @fredthemoose of course. 1w
fredthemoose Also sounds great! 1w
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @jimfields3 Would love to read The Scarlet Pimpernel! And I WILL be watching Looney Tunes‘s “The Scarlett Pumpernickel” to commemorate. 😂😂 Great choices! 1w

Pickpick

I think this is a solid pick. It‘s a little slow at times but about what I would expect for the first book of a trilogy. It also has a few good lessons for the audience along the way. I wouldn‘t recommend it to every person, but Anglophiles, fans of folklore, and fantasy readers should enjoy it. And June‘s #doublespin is checked off.

I‘ve become quite a fan of Murakami, but this one misses the mark for me. It‘s rather confusing, and I think it could be significantly shorter. I just finished reading it s few minutes ago, so as I continue to mull it over I may need to amend my evaluation.

Another #doublespin marked off the TBR list at least. @TheAromaofBooks

Baume is such an exquisite writer, I saved 16 quotes and could have easily saved at least a dozen more. It‘s a semi-autobiographical book about life with depression, but Baume “didn‘t intend to start a conversation about mental illness.”

If, like me, your mood is affected while reading it I suggest pushing through. The end is a hopeful one.

I‘d definitely reread this book, a rare verdict from me. May #bookspin completed, @TheAromaofBooks

If you enjoyed All The Light You Cannot See, you will priestly enjoy this one the same. (Between the two I‘d probably choose the former.) Though very different in content he writes with a consistent style. I didn‘t love this book, but I finished it. I guess I don‘t have award-winning taste.

If you haven‘t read any Murakami yet I don‘t recommend this be your first. If you have already enjoyed some of his other works this is a nice one to check off your list.

I appreciate his style, because at the end everything isn‘t all wrapped up with a pretty bow. I enjoy the balance he strikes between strange and opaque. I find this book to lean a little more towards opaque, hence the So-So rating.

My first completed #DoubleSpin too!

I rather liked this book. I have disagreements with some of the author‘s choices, but overall he wrote well enough that I finished this in less than a week, a brisk pace for this slow reader.

Pros
➡️ It‘s a quick read
➡️ It makes you think afterwards
Cons
➡️ It‘s not very engaging

All in all it‘s worth the time, in my opinion, but don‘t be upset if you don‘t get to it.

My first #bookspin completion! It was…

Interesting to get more insight into the thinking of the men who created and then advocated for the Constitution.
Disheartening that we've drifted so far away from their ideals, especially since it's mostly been a "creep" and not specific legislation.

It falls short of what it could be. It would have been so much better to have a final chapter or epilogue that gives ideas for what to do now. ⬇️

jimfields3 Contacting my goverment officials with the request to act/govern/serve more "Constitutionally" will have limited--if any--effect. What is a concerned citizen to do on the 364 days other than Election Day? Some ideas would have been great. (There were a few ideas scattered throughout the book; a concentrated treatment would have been much more effective.) 3mo

This is a quirky little book. It didn‘t pull me in very much, but the ending made me review the whole plot. My jaw was literally left hanging open.

At only 120 pages I think it‘s worth the time, especially for fellow Anglophiles.

The four words I hate to say the most (generally, but especially about books) are “I don‘t get it.”

When I finish a book I want to say, “This was great and here‘s why,” or “Here is why I didn‘t like this book.” Hofmann‘s writing is good enough to carry me through, but I have so many unanswered questions.

Maybe it‘s a better read for a discussion group. Any other readers care to chime in?

Very dense but very good. We often hear that gender, race, and class are just social constructs. In this book Murray meticulously details what years—in many cases decades—of research says about these popular statements.

This book gives you plenty to think about and, I believe, sets a high bar. Disagree with his conclusions? The challenge becomes finding other explanations supported by the data.

If you are looking for a screed of how difficult this woman thinks she has in this time and place in world history this book is as fine a choice as any.

Her main premise is anything‘s about race if a person of color says it is. She‘s a biracial person, therefore we must listen to her. Poorly formed arguments abound. Our multiracial group who read this together felt this wasn‘t helpful at all.

This is the heart of what people often mean, in my experience, when they talk about racism, sexism, and any other “ism.” Difference in outcome must mean there are systems keeping that person back. Murray wrote this book to review what science says about this premise.

I also appreciate how he separates this idea from equality in each person‘s inherent dignity and treatment under the law.
