Really enjoyable and fun, while also heartbreaking and educational. I‘m a big fan of Lucy‘s work, and am so glad I finally got to hear all about her journey to Pal. He‘s such a cute kid!

The first in the County Cork cozy mystery series, we follow Maura as she travels to Ireland after the death of her grandmother. Someone seems to be stalking/threatening her, and two dead bodies show up all in her first week in her g-ma‘s home town. I enjoyed this but didn‘t love it, mostly bc it wasn‘t so focused on the mystery, just on her trying to figure out her life. Other reviewers mention that Maura seems too negative, but I didn‘t think so.

MicheleinPhilly Every time someone says an MC is too negative I usually think “I‘ll probably relate to her/him/them.” #CrankyAss 👍🏼 1w

Another satisfying entry (the fourth) in this Regency-set cozy series. This time Lucy and the Major are engaged, and while they both long for a quick country wedding while her family push for a fancy London affair, the Major causes a ruckus at the Fair awarding the verger the lions share of prizes. When he‘s found dead soon after it opens old feuds and past history, not to mention other dead bodies and kidnappings. But Mrs Fielding got what‘s...

LauraBrook ...been coming her way for awhile, and that was most satisfying to read. I look forward to the 5th book, and to what married life could possibly look like for these two well-suited people. 2w

Well, I certainly didn‘t figure out who did it in this mystery! This second in the Shetland series (image is a map where this is set) didn‘t disappoint. Det Jimmy Perez is back at it with the overly energetic DI Taylor in tow, trying to find out who killed at least two people, and why. Reading this the last two nights made my insomnia bearable. Fingers crossed I can check out book 3 online tonight!

TheBookAddict I‘ve always been a fan of mysteries. I‘m glad they helped you get through these past 2 nights. I‘m 🤞🏽 that you can get the 3rd book. 2w

About a quarter of the way through this one, the second in the Shetland series. Question for anyone who‘s read the books and seen the TV series - what do you think about the adaptation? I‘ve only read and watched the first book (it‘s S2 E1 for TV) and was underwhelmed, despite liking all of the actors.

Lizpixie I do like the tv show, but yeah, it doesn‘t live up to the books at all. I think you have to see them as two completely different animals, appreciate the books for the character development & clever plots, and appreciate the show for the videography of the beautiful scenery. 2w
LauraBrook @Lizpixie Hi Friend! 🥰 That‘s what I was thinking, related things but not the same. Thanks for confirming. It was just so disappointing to watch that first story, like “wth...”?! The biggest annoyance I had was that tv made it set in the summer. The body being buried in the snow and the whole setting was so integral to the plot, and instead it‘s summer and they find her wearing a bright red coat in the middle of a beach by a main road?!?!🤦🏻‍♀️ 2w
Lizpixie The only saving grace for those episodes I think is Brian Cox as Magnus Tait. He portrays him beautifully. 2w
LauraBrook @Lizpixie He absolutely does. 2w

My final stack (minus the ebook). I didn‘t really track the time I spent reading (I think it was around 6 hours?), but I read 1,272 pages. Most of those were illustrated, though, and two I was a quarter of the way through when I picked them up last night. It was fun to just sit down and read for the first time in months, and I added plenty of books to my TBR after seeing your posts. Looking forward to the next one in April! #deweysoct

This was honestly educational and it made me laugh too! Covering all parts of the lives of children, from getting pregnant in the first place, all the way through the teenage years. The Q & A format made it easy to read and I really appreciated the humor throughout. I liked this much better than her first book (which got too repetitive in the second half). Recommended! #deweysoct book 7

I haven‘t read a Nancy Drew book in such a long time, and I don‘t remember ever reading this one when I was a kid. Nancy and three friends are sailing from Rotterdam to NYC when Nancy sees someone on the dock signing her name to someone else on board the ship. There‘s a mysterious trunk, stolen jewels, masked intruders - lots of mayhem and fun! Of course Nancy figures everything out in the end. And this book made me chuckle unintentionally...

LauraBrook ... Nancy constantly refers to signing/using sign language as fingering or using the finger language. That makes me think of the Finger Lakes and the SNL Lawrence Welk sketches and Dooneese. I couldn‘t stop laughing! #deweysoct book 6 4w

It was such a pleasure to be back in this world. Following Karluk and Amir as he learns to hunt and their relationship grows, and Henry Smith as he finally makes his way to Ankara, the detail of the story (not to mention the unbelievably wonderful illustrations) is so immersive and captivating. This is one of my favorite GN series. While I hope she doesn‘t stop writing them, I look forward to an eventual series reread back-to-back. #deweysoct bk 5

Eh. I was excited to hear about this comic (the movie is one of my favorites), but I was underwhelmed. I appreciated the diversity of the characters and the new ones added in too, but the mystery and following everyone and the butler/narrator constantly breaking the 4th wall to talk to the creators? Just didn‘t do it for me. I feel liked it either needed more time for pacing/plot, or less story threads. #deweysoct book 4

An abbreviated version of the classic story, complete with illustrations. It‘s cute, and would be good for people who are concerned about understanding the language or intimidated by the length of the original novel. One change made to the story is its narration by Margaret, the youngest sister. I liked that the back listed all the changes made, some history, and a small bibliography. #deweysoct book 3

rubyslippersreads I think it would be really fun to hear the story from Margaret‘s POV. 4w
LauraBrook @rubyslippersreads It kind of was! Even though in this one Margaret comes with Elinor and Marianne to London (and seems to be in her early teens), it was nice to have a known narrator. 4w

An unusual twist to the well-known Titanic lore. A thieving couple poses as newlyweds to bilk rich people on the ship, but they both have ulterior motives, and end up all over this massive ship, righting wrongs and taking out bad guys as they try to make their way to a lifeboat. A v James Patterson book, but frothy fun, and there are worse ways to kill a half hour. #deweysoct book 2

Even through Dewey‘s didn‘t officially start when I finished it, I‘m still counting it. Thanks to insomnia I was up until 5AM so I finished the last 2/3rds of this one. Book 5 in the White House chef mystery series. I like Olivia, Gav, her coworkers in the kitchen, and the setting. This time Olivia finds two dead staffers in a nearby kitchen and gets involved in another investigation. There were a few times I got nervous but it all ended OK.

A Christmas Journey | Anne Perry
post image
Pickpick

This series is so popular at my library, I‘m glad I waited until after the holidays to start reading. I like Anne Perry‘s work, and I enjoyed this novella set around Christmas. It features a side character, Vespasia, from the Thomas Pitt series (haven‘t read that yet) helping a friend on a sort of mercy mission to the north of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 to pass along news of a suicide she thinks she played a part in. 3.5 stars, and happy to have read it!

LauraBrook Also, I LOVE the format of these books. A small, squarish hardcover under 200 pages, with nicely spaced lines and margins. I wish more books were printed like this! 7mo
Bookgirl Are you familiar with Anne Perry‘s history? I can‘t bring myself to read her books after seeing Heavenly Creatures 7mo
LauraBrook @Bookgirl Ugh, I was gone for a month. Yes, and it took me about 15 years to read any of her work. I can just about forget it now, and once I‘m actively reading, I‘m just in her worlds. Kind of brutal and unbelievable for an authors life story, though, isn‘t it? I mean, I know it‘s true, but this is probably the best career option for her. I can‘t imagine she was thrilled about the movie when it came out. 6mo

An interesting look at the trial and lives of two famous and infamous “He-She ladies” in the 1870s. It‘s well-researched, and is full of details and old-fashioned vocabulary, but something about the book as a whole feels a little hollow to me. I‘d still recommend it, especially as I‘m not aware of another book with the same subject matter (barring Oscar Wilde, of course). 3.5 stars. Book 1 done for the #readathon

A detailed, yet brief and wide-ranging history of classical music. It‘s meant for kids, but I think it‘s a nice, quick starter for anyone at about 30 pages. There are QR links to listen to music every other page (which I didn‘t use), a nice touch. Getting ready for tomorrow‘s Dewey‘s Readathon, a little later and more scattered than normal. But hey, it‘ll be fun regardless. I have a friend staying at my house this weekend, and she says she wants to participate too, but she reads less than I normally do, so we shall see.

I‘ll be posting here mostly, and not so much on my blog or Instagram.

Who else is joining in? #deweys #readathon

CocoReads We‘re heading out of town for my birthday so I‘m skipping this one but we are stopping at Lowry‘s books in Three Rivers on our way to Battle Creek so I‘m going to at least get some awesome book shopping in on the way to our concert. 😀 📚 and 🤘-the best way to spend a birthday weekend! 13mo

Hello Litsy friends! Not sure how or why it‘s been 2 months since I was last here - it‘s very much my bad.

I‘ve fallen down a YouTube rabbit hole for planners and planning. And desk/office tours and sticker organization. And speed cleaning/decluttering. One good side effect is that I‘m getting rid of stuff more often and at a higher volume. One bad thing is that I‘m buying more stickers!

Here‘s a not-great shot of some TBR in the guest room.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Welcome back! 1y
Lcsmcat We missed you. 1y

LauraBrook @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lcsmcat @JenReadsAlot @MicheleinPhilly @Texreader @BethM @ju.ca.no @LeahBergen @Suet624 I‘m so happy to be back. I‘ve missed all of you!!! 😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚 14mo
LauraBrook @AlaMich Yes, I‘m trying to reorganize my house as much as possible, and trying to get ideas from what others have done. Kind of hard in my old house, not much space to shift any furniture that much, but more how to store things, and places to keep them. I would LOVE to see your study/Room Of Your Own, it sounds amazing!!! 😚 14mo
LauraBrook @MallenNC Me too! It‘s an endless battle. 😚 14mo
LauraBrook @BarbaraBB Yes, that‘s probably a third of my TBR, including the stuff on the bed you can‘t really see. The bin with the white lid is my current “books I‘ve read and want to save” bin, it‘ll live in the basement once it‘s full. At some point I‘d like to have my already-reads upstairs on shelves, but seeing as my TBR is more than doubled that amount, it‘s unlikely in the near future. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Always a book lover... 😚 14mo
LauraBrook @Readerann Thank you, my dear! 😚 Will you be doing Dewey‘s next month? 14mo
LauraBrook @drbethandherkindle Thank you! I wish we could post videos here, I could do a quick shelf tour. I wish I didn‘t have to double stack, but it‘s a necessity. 😚 14mo
AlaMich @LauraBrook Weellll, it is a work in slow progress, but I will share whenever it is finished 😊 14mo
Readerann @LauraBrook Absolutely! The last one didn‘t go so well, so hoping we can ROCK this one! 14mo

Glad to have this audiobook on my drive down to Janesville this morning to visit a friend! Hopefully it‘ll help distract me from my road-construction-rage. 😳

2BR02B You're not taking 90, are you? I drive to Beloit on 90 every couple of weeks, and it's been pretty bonkers. 1y
LauraBrook @2BR02B No, I did 94 to 26 into Janesville. Was less hairy than I expected! Sorry you‘re stuck on crazy 90 so often. 😕 1y
Mollyanna You got lucky. 94 can be a nightmare too. It‘s my daily commute. When will they be done with the Zoo construction? Of course it‘s construction season here in Wisconsin. Hope you had a nice time visiting with your friend! 1y
LauraBeth Just checking on you, friend! 💕 1y

What a great book! I read the whole thing yesterday (best way to spend a Sunday!), and couldn‘t turn the pages fast enough. In this one, a monk is murdered in a secluded garden in the middle of nowhere, and Gamache and Jean-Guy are sent out to investigate. How so much can happen in just a few days is amazing to me, and it ends on a huge knife-twist to the heart. I both can and can‘t believe it. Instead of spacing out my reads I‘m on the the next!

Oh, how I have missed reading Ms Penny. I save her books for special occasions, mostly when I know I can truly sink myself into the book, and already on page 24 I am deeply smitten. ❤️ Gamache ❤️

kspenmoll I am anxious for her next in November. I always pre order. Feeling like I may want to reread series sometime because I discovered Still Life the year it was published & so much has happened, changed over the novels! 1y
Kammbia1 Yes LauraBrook! I love Louise Penny. I enjoyed The Beautiful Mystery a lot. The Long Way Home is my favorite Gamache novel so far. I still have a lot of read in the series. (edited) 1y

Well, looks like I‘m acing that whole “keeping up with social media thing”. Yikes. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘m noticing that I only need my glasses when I‘m on my phone (or my eyes are extremely tired), and I‘m trying to be a little more present in my real life. I‘m single, no kids, and live alone, so it shouldn‘t be as hard as I make it. One good thing out of this absence is that I broke my reading rut - yahoo!!! Finally hit the halfway point too, 101/200, yay!

LeahBergen Holy crap! I haven‘t had ANY reading ruts and my totals are nowhere near that. 😂😂 1y

Well, the reading rut drags on. About the only things I‘m able to focus on are books like this one, about houses and decluttering and things. And while I‘m certainly far from a minimalist at home, I‘m slowly but surely weeding through things and donating like crazy. (Also, I‘m hooked on YouTube videos of KonMari-ing & decluttering - if you have any favorites, let me know!) I‘m annoyed that I can‘t focus on fun stuff, but it has to break soon!🤞🏼

RadicalReader @LauraBrook what a gorgeous book cover looks like the mountains against a skyline 1y
tammysue This is the book that was helpful to me for organization when the kids were little. I had found out about her book on an Oprah show. 😁 1y
TheWordJar Love this book! I did my closet last year and loved the results. Working up to doing the office next. Those videos are an endless rabbit hole but so fascinating! 1y

BarbaraTheBibliophage 👋🏻👋🏻 Hi! I‘m sorry the reading rut has dragged on so long. So difficult! 😘 1y
TiredLibrarian Good for you on the decluttering & organizing! Been there with the reading rut; it will pass, but it's frustrating while it lasts. 📚😓😊 1y
Zelma I am a fan of Peter Walsh. His books are a little old but still good. Also check out The Minimalists online; their essays are great. Also anything by Joshua Becker. 1y
LauraBrook @RadicalReader Thanks! I‘m glad the American version was this one, some of the others I‘ve seen have looked awful! 1y
LauraBrook @whatshesreadingnow Thanks for the rec, I haven‘t read that one yet (I don‘t think). Will request it from the library! 1y
LauraBrook @TheWordJar Wow, I‘m impressed you did your closest! I haven‘t done my clothes yet, at least not the in-season-and-currently-fit-me ones. I know, I am loving those videos! 1y
LauraBrook @BarbaraTheBibliophage Hi!!! It‘s still dragging on, but I‘m hoping it will break this weekend. It‘s supposed to be around 100 and humid, so after work tomorrow my only plans are to read. Fingers crossed! Also, I am loving your blog! 💖 1y
LauraBrook @TiredLibrarian Thanks for the commiseration, I‘m hoping it passes ASAP! TGIF! 1y
LauraBrook @Zelma I love Peter Walsh! I miss his tv show too. I‘ve read his It‘s All Too Much tons of times. Until the last couple of years with all of these new decluttering books came out, he was the only one who would motivate me! Checking everything else out you suggested 🤓🤓🤓 1y
LauraBrook @Christyco125 Lord knows I could always use help in the cleaning department too! Phew, my library card will be getting a workout! Thanks for the recommendation! 1y
Zelma @LauraBrook Clean Sweep was such a good show! I really miss it. Walsh was so good at the psychology of stuff, more than any of those Hoarders therapists. 1y

I‘ve been feeling a little better recently, & have been working on my house, cleaning up & out. And while I firmly believe that one can never have too many books, I‘ve started to feel the weight of my unreads (currently 2,254 physicals) & want to do something about it. Since it‘s humid & gross outside & I suddenly got the day off, I decided to pull a few off of my shelves for some Speed Dating. 20-50 pgs each, & if I‘m not intrigued, out they go!

readordierachel What a great idea! Good luck! 1y
LauraBrook @ReadOrDieRachel Thanks! I‘m hoping I can keep the momentum going for at least one more round today. 🤞🏼 1y
LeahBergen I recently had a big shelf clearing (and I gave many books a “three page scan” before I got rid of them 😂). 1y

2BR02B I do this occasionally too. But wow, that is a mind-boggling number of unread books! 1y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen I‘m impressed! Did you make a decently sized dent in your library? 1y
LauraBrook @2BR02B That‘s what happens when you‘ve always been a book hoarder I MEAN LOVER who really only buys books. The sad part is that I keep finding an oddball here and there that‘s unlisted. And if anything makes me happy, it‘s adding new books to my LibraryThing library! 🤓 1y
LeahBergen @LauraBrook Yep! I got rid of about 200. I try to do this once a year or so. 😆 1y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen You are my idol! 200 in one round? I am majorly impressed. (Also, feel free to send your rejects my way. We don‘t have to tell anyone else. 😉😂😉) 1y
MicheleinPhilly 😳😳😳2200+???? *feels so much better about her TBR; orders more books* 1y
2BR02B @LauraBrook I know what you mean- ever since I discovered the LT app, I'm addicted. Scanning barcodes and hearing the little beep is so satisfying. 1y
DivaDiane Oh wow! You have beat even me and @julesG ! You need the #MountTBR challenge! Join us. It‘s as challenging or as low key as you want it to be. 1y
julesG @DivaDiane Definitely! I could not fit 2000+ physical books into my flat. I'm glad my #MountTBR is mainly made of ebooks (Kindle/Amazon showed me more than 900 books in their cloud, after I installed the Kindle App yesterday - I'm insane! How did I manage to buy so many books? No wonder I never have money.) 1y
Suet624 I‘m feeling the weight of my unread books too. Your post hit home for me. 1y
LauraBrook @suet624 It‘s surprising that we don‘t feel or notice that weight more often, isn‘t it? 1y
Suet624 Yes! I think I use it as a way to feel guilty. (edited) 1y

Watching Red again this weekend while his parents are Up North. He‘s a cutie, but seems to want to attack my Starbucks straw. Every time I think he‘s forgotten about it, he resurfaces and takes a swipe at it. 😸

In Bookish news, I‘m having a hard time reading lately. Today my eyes are bothering me but I suspect it‘s because it‘s going to humid & 95 and that‘s my least fave kind of weather. Managed to get a few pages of this in, but that‘s it! 😩
