Geralt is merciless assassin who‘s targets are the multifarious monsters and vile fiends that ravage the land and attack the innocent. He wanders the country continuously seeking new assignments.
All the stories in the book are real page-turners. They are all different, the plots are easy to follow which keep the readers engaged.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this introduction to the Witcher. Really looking forward to starting the second one.

My penultimate pick for #12booksof2021 (November) is The Last Wish.

Dark fairytale retellings at their finest, full of folk lore, monsters and witchering. As a big fan of the videogames, this was irresistible.

Also, somebody posted asking which literary character we'd kiss on NYE... mine would be Geralt of Rivia 😅😘 Just saying.

Its a hard bail for me...I hated how it was like short stories put together... When we got to the princess whom lost her kingdom because a man raped her, I bailed! I should've started with the blood of elves. Since I have the first 3 witcher books, I will try book one.

It's impossible for me to read this series without having the videogame in mind. It's one of my favourites of all time.. I was worried that reading the books would be a disappointment, especially since Andrzej Sapkowski is purportedly not a fan of the games.

I needn't have worried. Dark, morally ambiguous retellings of fairy tales, Witcher missions and tales of destiny make this a brilliant introduction to the world.

ADVICE NEEDED!
I started reading the tagged book many months ago, and then I stopped even though I've found it interesting, and now I picked it up again, but I'm not vibing with it. Have you read it? Should I continue with this or skip it and start with the novels? Or should I skip this whole series altogether? Or maybe I should wait for some better time when I'm more in the fantasy mood?😅😅🙈

xicanti I wasn‘t wild about this book (or the first novel), but I seem to be in a tiny minority. 2mo
SayersLover My vote: put it down until you‘re in the right mood again. Skipping and jumping doesn‘t really help if you‘re not in the right mood and forcing yourself to plough through (especially when you don‘t need to) is worse. Give yourself permission to read something else… 🙂 @zezeki 2mo
Read-y_Picker Read it. Don't really remember much, nothing really stuck and I haven't picked up the next one yet. Kept postponing my library holds until I just gave up altogether lol 2mo

Thought I‘d try the Witcher series since it‘s so popular. Having read The Last Wish, I‘m really scratching my head. Like, what the heck do people see in this book? The writing isn‘t really bad, but it‘s not that good either. The characters weren‘t that memorable or fleshed out. And you can really tell he hadda work to make make these stories into a semi-coherent whole. Just not that impressive. Will I continue with the series? Yeah, not likely. 😕

RamsFan1963 I felt the same way. I don't get the hype at all. 2mo

Apparently I didn‘t read a lot of physical books this month. I went to take my pictures and I didn‘t have anything to take a picture of. The only physical book I completed was The Last Wish. Everything else was e-book or audio. I didn‘t complete anything that I just really loved, but I started Empire of the Vampire this month. I really think it could be a new favorite.

I'm glad I finished this. I considered bailing early on, but I stuck it out. The book does get better as it moves from story to story, but overall I found it kind of bland and generic. I didn't find Geralt or his world interesting enough to continue the series. 3 ⚔⚔⚔

Bookwomble I haven't read the books, but my daughter loved the video game and persuaded me to watch the TV series, which I thought was excellent. The interviews I've seen of the author made me less inclined to read his original work, and you've clinched it for me! Too many books, too little time 🙂 4mo

I‘m not usually a fan of short story collections, but I was hoping The Last Wish would change my mind. But it didn‘t. I just didn‘t get the world building or character development that I wanted. I like fully fleshed out worlds and this felt lacking. But I‘m giving it the benefit of the doubt since it‘s the first book. Hopefully things develop later in the series.

https://wildwoodreads.com/2021/09/08/the-last-wish-by-andrzej-sapkowski-review/

SilverShanica This book and the next are the 2 short story collections, then the books flesh out into full novels. The original stories were published in magazines and got such great reviews/following that the author went on to create the novels. I haven‘t gotten that far in the series, but apparently the short stories set a lot of the history up for the full novels. 4mo
RamsFan1963 I'm currently trying to make my way through this one. Several people recommended it because of the TV show. So far, I've found it kind of bland and generic. 4mo
wildwoodreads @SilverShanica That definitely makes sense because at times it felt a tad disjointed, but I definitely have hope for the actual novels. I expect that I will like them better. 4mo
wildwoodreads @RamsFan1963 It gets a little better closer to the end. There‘s a bit more wit. Still not as good as I wanted it to be but it gave me hope for the next one. 4mo
SilverShanica @megzlynn I had it explained to me that the first season of the show (if you‘ve been watching) pulled from the 2 short story collections and that season 2 will be pulling from the full novels. So the disjointedness makes sense in both formats, and the story levels out when we get everything onto “current” time and makes more sense. 4mo

I absolutely loved this, it is a great introduction to the world and the characters. The short stories help to get used to the translations as well as some things are not fully translated. I love that the author includes fairy tales as real history and the way it was done is really clever. It's definitely one I will read again and would recommend if you like fantasy.

I absolutely loved The Witcher series (on Netflix maybe?) so when this first book was a kindle deal I scooped it up.

It‘s a lot of fun. Written as lots of short adventures, almost short stories, which worked well. I don‘t know if I‘ll read the other books, honestly I‘d rather see another season of the show. (I mean, who wouldn‘t want to see Gerald in a tub of soapy water again, right?)

This book was a bail for me. I‘m not saying that it isn‘t good exactly but it‘s written in a very odd way. The chapters sort of jump around a lot and I wasn‘t really sure if the events were in chronological order and then I came to one chapter where the main character, Geralt, is just talking? Not your typical fantasy book and it just wasn‘t for me.

Obsessed. I am obsessed! It's a book of short stories fleshing out the history of the Witcher (a monster killer), mixed with a current timeline that I am assuming is leading into the next book, which is already on its way in the mail to me 🎉
Funny, dramatic, well thought out and entertaining. The monsters are clever and scary and familiar. This has jumped right up into my favorites of all time.

This is a series of short stories that connect. I did not know that going into the book so I found myself very confused. It doesn‘t help that many of the monsters our Witcher faced were unfamiliar to me. I think I‘m just going to watch the show since I just couldn‘t figure out the world. Not bad just not for me. As a side note there is some adult scenes and concepts.

3/5⭐ I loved how many of the stories retold fairy tales in a dark way, and/or weaved heavy fairy tale elements throughout. The book deals with some good themes like humans being monstrous, “monsters“ not being monstrous by default, and nods to colonialism.

However, the book doesn't always handle the themes very well. Definitely some problematic aspects, and the misogyny and ableism throughout is rank.

Why don't you humans finally realize that your domination of the world is as natural and repellant as lice multiplying in a sheepskin coat? You could propose we cohabit with lice and get the same reaction—and I'd listen to the lice as attentively if they, in return for our acknowledgment of their supremacy, were to agree to allow common use of the coat.
