Home Before Dark | Riley Sager, Todd Ritter
In the latest thriller from New York Times bestseller Riley Sager, a woman returns to the house made famous by her father's bestselling horror memoir. Is the place really haunted by evil forces, as her father claimed? Or are there more earthbound--and dangerous--secrets hidden within its walls? What was it like? Living in that house. Maggie Holt is used to such questions. Twenty-five years ago, she and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. They spent three weeks there before fleeing in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His tale of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity--and skepticism. Today, Maggie is a restorer of old homes and too young to remember any of the events mentioned in her father's book. But she also doesn't believe a word of it. Ghosts, after all, don't exist. When Maggie inherits Baneberry Hall after her father's death, she returns to renovate the place to prepare it for sale. But her homecoming is anything but warm. People from the past, chronicled in House of Horrors, lurk in the shadows. And locals aren't thrilled that their small town has been made infamous thanks to Maggie's father. Even more unnerving is Baneberry Hall itself--a place filled with relics from another era that hint at a history of dark deeds. As Maggie experiences strange occurrences straight out of her father's book, she starts to believe that what he wrote was more fact than fiction. Alternating between Maggie's uneasy homecoming and chapters from her father's book, Home Before Dark is the story of a house with long-buried secrets and a woman's quest to uncover them--even if the truth is far more terrifying than any haunting.

Book 122📚 5⭐️

Sager loves a Vermont Fall🍂🍁 I know it‘s horror, but I really want to vacation in the Vertmont wilderness mid-October!😂

I had absolutely no doubts I would love this - being a total SagBaby🤣👏🏻

Really enjoyed how it was written as a book within a book. Kept me super interested in both storylines, which flipped back and forth seamlessly😘🤌🏻

Whoopsie… finished this one last night and forgot to post about it.

I really liked the haunted house story-within-the-story better than the current-day events of the book. It has some genuinely creepy parts and I couldn‘t stop listening to this book once I got going. It feels like the author tried to do a bit too much and some plot lines are weak or confusing. The ending was… not great.

Still waiting for the title to make sense. 🤔

This was a good haunted house story - enjoyed how it was told - from Maggie's current day POV (in the house, trying to figure out if her fathers book about it was true) and from Ewans (Maggies dad) POV as he tells the story of their life in the “horror house“ - the difference between good and great is the ending (this one was tied up neatly, great horror (I think) is messy)

I had no idea this horror/mystery glowed in the dark til I turned off my book light! This was pretty good for a mystery and average for a horror book. It wasn‘t very spooky and I feel he used an awful lot of material from Haunting of Hill House (at one point I felt like I was reading a novelization). But the mystery was good and it surprised me and it had spooky vibes. Not my favorite but I‘m glad I read it and learned the mystery behind it.

I finally read this since the new one is coming as a #BOTM add-on this month. Not my favorite Riley Sager (It‘s Lock Every Door) but I enjoyed this spooky house thriller. I think what I like most about Sager‘s books are that they take me back to the plots of horror film favorites from my youth. Definite Amityville Horror vibe for this one. 🖤I had the plot figured out but there were some twists & I did get creeped out reading it at night so 😱👍.

I am reading waaay too many books all at one time right now! Usually I am a one book at a time person and Litsy has totally changed my habit in the 11 months that I have been a Litten. Right now, I have 3 print books and 2 audiobooks going. And of course, they ALL have to be similar genres, just to keep me on my toes trying to keep the plots straight! 😂 #polygamousreader #monogamousreader

How many books do you usually read at one time?

Read-y_Picker Same! I now have at least a print, an audiobook and an EBook going at all times, sometimes more. #IblameLitsy 2y
Cuilin I blame Litsy for my more than one book at time habit. There‘s so many fun buddy reads!! I think I have 4-5 books going right now. 😳 2y
Ruthiella I usually have two to three going at once but they have to all be fairly different one from another...otherwise I would probably also mix them up too much in my head. 2y
See All 35 Comments
kspenmoll I always have more than one going to match my varying moods/interests. And always an audiobook. Litsy got me into audiobooks- I had never listened to a book before that unless in person!!! 2y
Scochrane26 I‘m usually a one physical/one audiobook person. I haven‘t been listening lately though. 2y
EatSleepRead One audio and one physical. I can't handle more than that! 2y
DarkMina Usually one audio and one physical. I do have two physical going right now due to a buddy read. 2y
Kappadeemom I usually read 2 or three. One print, one Kindle and one other genre that is unlike the others (like a non-fiction) 2y
NikkiM5 I was the same 😂 only one book at a time until I joined Litsy 2y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Typically I am also a one book at a time person. Recently I‘m up to two at a time. I started following along with a YouTuber‘s science book club, so I‘ve been reading those books alongside my other personal choice. I think I could probably do three at once, but I won‘t. 😅 And I‘d absolutely lose my mind with 4+. 2y
Sharpeipup 7 at a time but I do try to have different genres. 2y
Pageturner1 maybe two at a time. not a fast reader. i either have audiobook in car and hard copy of a different book at home or e-book. 2y
CogsOfEncouragement I like to have a fiction and a non-fiction at any given time. I used to always have a book I was reading with my kids too, but as they are older that is not very often anymore. 2y
Deblovestoread At least 3, kindle, print and audio. Currently 5 which include 2 chapter a day buddy reads. They all have to be different genres, time periods etc or I couldn‘t keep them straight in my head. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick At this exact moment, 3 books. One in my office, once at home, and an audiobook. I'll probably start a new ebook later today or tomorrow so I can pause the buddy read book in my office. 2y
katy4peas @Cuilin That‘s true! A lot of it is Buddy Reads. Without them, I would be back down to one print and one audio which is more my normal. 🤔 but they are so fun! 2y
katy4peas @Ruthiella I‘m starting to get to that problem where some of them are a bit too similar and the characters could easily fit into multiple books! I need to spread out my genres if I am going to have multiple books going. 2y
katy4peas @kspenmoll I‘ve definitely started to become a mood reader since the pandemic hit. I have become very picky about my books and have been very decisive about not finishing them if I am not enjoying them. My habits have changed a lot! 2y
katy4peas @Scochrane26 I‘m listening to a buddy read and then I started another audio because I was caught up with my section. I have become a huge listener lately because I can knit while I listen and multitask! I also love the narrators‘ accents and how they can appropriately read characters dialects and pronounce names better then I can, so certain books I like as audio for sure. 2y
katy4peas @EatSleepRead that‘s usually where I‘m at. And I usually try to keep the genres somewhat different or at least different time periods! 2y
katy4peas @DarkMina me too, three of mine are actually buddy reads and two are my own. 🤔 2y
Scochrane26 @katy4peas I like audiobooks, but with working from home, I have found it takes me forever to finish one. I listen to podcasts lately but will get back into audio soon. 2y
katy4peas @Kappadeemom I think I need to add the nonfiction into my mix as well. I‘m getting a little bit mystery and thriller heavy right now except for Jane Austen! 🤷‍♀️ 2y
katy4peas @NikkiM5 oh, Litsy! 💕 2y
katy4peas @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm three are buddy reads but the genres are still very similar so I am going to have to figure something out so I can keep track of them all a little better. They are all starting to blend. Jane Austen meets vampire meets ghost meets detective 😂🤷‍♀️ 2y
katy4peas @Sharpeipup wow! Different genres definitely helps! I need to figure out how to rearrange my reading a little so mine are more spread out since they are similar genres. 2y
katy4peas @Pageturner1 I‘m not a fast reader either and because I am suddenly a mood reader I have been book hopping a little bit but I also have buddy reads going on and that adds more to my current pile. So now I am up to 5 books and they are all similar genres because that is what I like to read. 🤷‍♀️😂 2y
Cuilin @katy4peas I know and I‘ve made so many great Litsy friends doing them 💖 2y
katy4peas @CogsOfEncouragement I used to have a book and a comic so I could choose which to read. The comics were short and I could read 2-3 pages and then go to bed. Now I just have my full books which is fine, but they take me longer to read. I probably need that non-fiction read to help balance and give me that sometimes quicker read before bed. It might be easier for me to read a short ch or para and it would be a different genre. Hooray! 2y
katy4peas @Kdgordon88 yeah, I‘m finding that out too. It comes back to me when I open the book, but sometimes the characters fit into the other books to easily. 😅 2y
katy4peas @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick that‘s a great idea to keep one at work. I‘m a slow reader and don‘t know if I could keep up with my buddy read, but I will have to think about that. 2-3 is usually my max. I also have a hard time with multiple books because I usually am so caught up in one story that I want to focus and sink into just that one. So multiple books takes me out of that world. Buddy reads has helped me balance that though. 2y
katy4peas @Read-y_Picker I got a Kindle for Christmas and have been stocking up on ebooks for it. Soon it will probably be in the rotation as well! 🤦‍♀️ there are so many books I want to read! And I am a sllooww reader! 2y
katy4peas @Scochrane26 oh, podcasts are another rabbit hole! 😁 2y
Powered_By_Plants 😂😂 goodness me too!! Currently on a few buddy reads which is great just a chapter a day and then a book with my daughter , always have an audiobook on the go too, so 5 altogether. Definitely making the most of it while we are locked down as I wouldn‘t be able to do so many usually. Love that you get your knit on with an audiobook 🧶 😁 (edited) 2y

An interesting take on the “haunted house” horror genre. Kind of an Amityville Horror meets Haunting of Hill House. There were things I liked, but this took me two digital library checkouts to finish, so overall didn‘t really grab my attention. Probably my least favorite of the Riley Sager thrillers I‘ve read. 2.5 ⭐️

I am a Riley Sager fan and love haunted house stories so it‘s no surprise I liked this!

Maggie doesn‘t remember much about living in a haunted house, but her whole life was shaped by “the Book” that her father wrote about their time there.
And yes, you get to read “the Book” (as this is a book within a book) while Maggie tries to understand what really happened.

So glad this got chosen for #LMPBC and it was also on my #NewYearWhoDis list!

I had a lot of fun with this one for #LMPBC. The spooks were fun. My only complaints had to do with a few plot elements that would be spoilers and the fact that the only “character” I was attached to was the house. Maggie Holt has just inherited the home her family abandoned and fled in the middle of the night when she was just 5. The same home her father profited off of by writing a sensational Amityville style ghost story about. Maggie doesn‘t remember anything about her life in the home, but she‘s determined to find out what really happened. She “🎵better beware, be canny and careful.🎶” An engrossing twisty dark read. 4⭐️ Read for #LMPBC and enjoyed it. Kept me guessing the entire time. Had some goosebump causing scenes which I think every ghost story/thriller should have.
Sending this out in the mail today for the next person in our group.

I read this between Nov 12 & 13. I gave it 3 ⭐️ but in some ways it feels more like a 2.5 star read. I have a long review on my Good Reads account. Sager is a decent writer with great ideas for a thrillers but by this point, his books are predictable and safe. There is always one too many twist and his heroines are flat and largely interchangeable.
