I loved this book! It‘s our first book club read and I can‘t wait to discuss. It was like watching a car accident - cringey but in a highly readable way! (21)

Well written and attention catching. I love books about controversial topics and this one was awesome. I loved to hate the narrator all the away through. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was like watching a car crash. I couldn‘t look away. Almost every character involved was self-serving and driven by an absolute narcissistic desire for success, but the author was so good and you are so invested in what happens next. The whole plot is really digging at a deeper issue of cultural history and authorship. The ever present threat of social media‘s ire gave it and added weight. Lived up to the hype for me.
I‘ve seen this book recommended in many forums, & have been wanting to read it. It drew me in from the start. If you‘ve read it, you know what I mean. I wish the entire book had been as good as the beginning. It‘s definitely a quick read. I can‘t say that any of the characters were likable, nor I don‘t think they were supposed to be.It‘s hard to believe that this is the same author that wrote Babel. The 2 books were so different.
Yellowface addresses many controversial topics of the publishing industry. Who has the right to tell minority stories? How thin is the line between inspired story telling and intellectual theft? Is cancel culture harmful and abusive or effective and just? It certainly made me question my own thoughts and opinions on the subjects! 4/5
This book reads like a dream, a thriller dream and it isn‘t. First chapter, main character‘s college friend dies “In a weird tragic way” who also was a successful writer. Then the “protagonist” who also is a writer, does the unthinkable. We will leave it at that. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Final thoughts!! Thank you all for participating!!
What do you think happens to June after the end of the story??
Have you read other books by this author? Do you plan to? Would you recommend this book??

June falls into a negative spiral. Should authors avoid reading reviews of their books? Should readers tag authors in their negative reviews?
How much truth do you think is in Yellowface? The publishing industry?
What is your opinion of the title of this book? What do you think of the controversy??

Do you think that either of the authors had the right to write about the Chinese Labor Corps? Should these stories only be written by someone with personal lived experiences with the issues? Were June‘s actions justified when she found out how people felt about her not having any Chinese heritage?

How do you feel about June changing her name? Was this unethical, deceitful?

Did June plagiarize Athena‘s work by publishing “The Last Front?” What about the second story? Should there be legal repercussions??

Currently reading!
An audacious protagonist and full of dark humour. This book was gifted to me by my friend. I‘m finding it really refreshing!
When your book matches your mimosa. Can‘t say I‘m loving this, too millennial. With no ballet for a while yet and being made to rest I have been having some restful weekends. Yesterday it was tea in bed before a cooked breakfast, a book in the bath then a lay in the hammock, an arvo nap followed by dinner and a show with my cousin. Today it was a pot of tea and the papers in bed. Some white wine and Gardening Australia later then early to bed.
I didn‘t love this. 🤣🤷🏻♀️I‘m not really sure what else to say. Being ultra curious, especially when it comes to how things work…I did find all the talk about publishing and the process very interesting. Wonder how much of it is true!! Looking forward to discussing!! #LitsyLoveReads
Athena Liu has know June Hayward since studying at university together. Athena dies in a freak accident and June gets hold of an unfinished manuscript Athena was working on. How far will June go to keep what she rightly believes is hers?
I loved the first person voice throughout. The author tackles racism, cultural appropriation and the threats of social media. Full of dark humour, lies, scandals and deceit.

June is so unlikable and delusional main character - and that's why I liked her. Her mind was so twisted, I loved to see what she's going to make up next.
This was really captivating read, I was intrigued to see what was going to happen next. Super easy & enjoyable read. And I loved the ending, it was twisted enough to my liking 😀
1. Get my flower beds cleaned out and ready 🪻☀️ and get somewhat caught up at work!!
2. Definitely being a Mom!!
3. Haven‘t planned anything for ‘24 yet!! I need to get to working on summer for sure!!
4. Yellow Face. 😳
Tux gives this one a so so rating and I agree! I can‘t remember a character that I‘ve ever disliked more than Junie! Her audacity was shocking! The racism was depressing and I kept wondering “where is this going?” I did like the second half more than the first and the publishing details were interesting. There were several trigger warnings that I wasn‘t expecting… lots to discuss!!

Like many others, I loved this book that gives an inside look at the ruthless world of publishing. Unpopular opinion: I loved the main character. I think I've always been fascinated by people who make out-of-character, horribly awful choices that loom with gnawing guilt until it finally implodes and their life shatters.
I only went to the library to pick up Yellowface 😂 The books looked so shiny and new, I couldn‘t resist!
Hey guys! Just checking in to see how y‘all are progressing!

This book was brilliant! So much going on! The casual and also blatant racism of which the protagonist is woefully blind says a lot about society today. Every page had something that made me either cringe or made me angry. The lies and deception will hook you in. Along with the fascinating look at the inside of the publishing industry. There is so much in this book!!. Would make a great book club read!

4✨ I‘m not sure how to feel about this book because of the racial back and forth that happens in it. It‘s unfortunate that it‘s a thing. That we judge other people‘s work and ideas because of the color of their skin. Stealing is wrong no matter how it gets twisted. This book gave a different dimension on theft, and the main character who we should hate or love has layers and it‘s hard to hate her or love her because she is getting injustice too.⬇️
Such an interesting topic, super thought-provoking and was a perfect pick for book club. It‘s hard to hate your narrator/main character but it‘s so well written you manage to hate June but still enjoy the book!

A book about flaws of twitter discourse and publishing industry. It's different and bizarre. For something being called as one of the best books of 2023 - I had really high expectations, but maybe too high :)
Received Yellowface from @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks - thank you so much for the book and the goodies! I‘m looking forward to reading this in March with the #litsylove bunch!
Max invited himself into this pic at the last moment. I ywas getting ready to take the photo and he plunked down and posed. He says hey!
Oh, and trying to finished up Groff for #authoramonth !
There were some slow parts, especially in the beginning, but otherwise I liked this.
Thank you for the gift of this book @CarolynM It was such a wild ride and kept me horrified in the best kind of way.. This book is a vehicle for Kuang to explore a variety of terrible behaviors. Beyond the protagonist‘s actions to the way in which an industry can pay lip service to and build PR around diversity while the real power and money still funnels through the existing channels. (The meeting with the Hollywood guys 🤯) ⬇️

I‘m a little blown away by how much I liked this! I mean, I hate the main character and find nothing redeeming about her AND we spend A LOT of time in her head. It‘s dark and funny and full of microaggressions, self-delusion and green-eyed jealousy. I devoured it.
