He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four moviesThe Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoonthat were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force. He was raised by a fiercely loving but mentally unwell mother and her parents after his father left them when he was young, but in a real sense he was raised by the streets of the South Bronx, and by the troop of buccaneering young friends he ran with, whose spirits never left him. After a teacher recognized his acting promise and pushed him toward New Yorks fabled High School of Performing Arts, the die was cast. In good times and bad, in poverty and in wealth and in poverty again, through pain and joy, acting was his lifeline, its community his tribe. Sonny Boy is the memoir of a man who has nothing left to fear and nothing left to hide. All the great roles, the essential collaborations, and the important relationships are given their full due, as is the vexed marriage between creativity and commerce at the highest levels. The books golden thread, however, is the spirit of love and purpose. Love can fail you, and you can be defeated in your ambitionsthe same lights that shine bright can also dim. But Al Pacino was lucky enough to fall deeply in love with a craft before he had the foggiest idea of any of its earthly rewards, and he never fell out of love. That has made all the difference.

Wonderful! I will have to plan an entire day for watching Al‘s 🎥 ‘cause somehow, I‘ve not seen many of them😳

I absolutely love listening to autobiographies/memoirs that are read by the author(s). I‘m always fascinated & intrigued by their life experiences.

I‘ve always had the hots for Al Pacino, so spending time with him via his memoir was a real treat. ☺️ You get to meet the incorrigible kid, the deeply passionate thespian & the self-reflective guy behind all those iconic movie characters. Al speaks fondly of his boyhood friends, mentors, fellow actors & his many loves who are still friends, and he‘s simply charming and quite funny! I did get to see him in a play on Broadway in ‘77: Ooh la la!

I can say I listened to the audiobook from start to finish, but I can't say I absorbed all of it. When I was paying attention, Pacino's voice and his recounting of days gone by was on the whole a charming experience, but I found it very easy to drift off to other thoughts in the process. 1/

Robotswithpersonality 2/? There are sadder, darker moments interwoven, but my overall impression is of an older gentleman reminiscing, recounting for a grandchild all those moments they'd want to hear about him experiencing first hand, the milestones. His mother's influence and loss is clearly a thread throughout the narrative, and as with Richards' biography, I'm left with the impression that this individual loves and admires the craft 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 involved in his profession, that his work has been pivotal, primary, in his life. If you want details, maybe pick up the print version, or make sure you're not distracted or sleepy while listening to audio only. 😅
⚠️mention of mother's suicide attempt, mention of friend experiencing single episode of child abuse/SA, alcoholism 5mo

I realize that most average humans don‘t read 5 books a YEAR, but this was a low month for me. Such is life working in greeting cards when Christmas is coming. 😴

I don‘t think Al Pacino had a ghostwriter and instead penned his own memoir. Which is pretty amazing! On the other hand, it reads like Al Pacino didn‘t have a ghostwriter, and he penned his own memoir. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It‘s not the most well-written book I‘ve ever read. Then again, it isn‘t the worst. So. If you are a fan and want to read Al‘s thoughts on acting and life, pick it up. It‘s a fairly quick read.
