Dead Souls | Nikolai Gogol
post image

#WeeklyForecast 50/19

I started Dead Souls on both audio and print. It will take a while to finish it, I think.
I am also reading Mr Nishino, which I will finish today.

Next will be Kindred for both #Booked2019 and #ReadingUSA2019.
I hope to finish the USA challenge this week by reading Sharp Objects.
If there is time left, I‘ll start In Hazard.

Cathythoughts I hear Kindred in great 👍🏻❤️ 2d
Kalalalatja That Gogol cover is great! 2d

Cinfhen Oohhh, you‘re getting so close to completing all your reading challenges 🙌🏻❣️😁 2d
batsy What a great array of books! 2d
TrishB Lovely pic ♥️ 2d
JennyM Echoing @batsy. Great, diverse selection! 2d
Billypar I really liked Dead Souls, but I didn't know it was unfinished when I started. I have the Hapgood English translation and it includes a conclusion written in 1857 by an author Zakharchenko that is translated into English from a French translation that Hapgood believed wasn't very good to begin with. Isn't that odd? I wish I didn't read it because it left a bad taste. 2d
BarbaraBB That is very odd indeed @Billypar! I am about halfway and enjoying it very much. I didn‘t know it was unfinished either! 2d

A young kid recently told me this was his favorite, so I told him I'd read it so we could talk about it.

Shiloh is a wonderful book about a boy willing to do whatever he can for a dog. While this isn't as profound as Where the Red Fern Grows, it's a terrific story for young readers to feel that amazing bond between a boy and a dog.

A Killing in the Hills | Julia Keller

I read this book solely because I was in need for a book set in #WestVirginia for #ReadingUSA2019 but it turned out to be a decent thriller. At least as interesting is the description of the state. Desolate, depressing and forgotten, that‘s the way Keller writes about West Virginia. Drugs rule and the future seems very unpromising in the small town where the story takes place.

Librarybelle I need to read this one! 3d
squirrelbrain That‘s good news, that it turned out OK! 3d
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I saw your email! Thank you so much 😘 3d

#BookReport 49/19

I had a great week, even though I bailed on Gulliver‘s Travels. Both Red at the Bone and The Good Son were fantastic and A Killing in the Hills, which I‘ve read for West-Virginia in the #ReadingUSA2019 challenge, is a decent thriller too.

jenniferw88 The 4th trip in Gulliver's Travels is the best one! 3d
BarbaraBB @jenniferw88 I didn‘t make it that far I must admit. I bailed during the second. 3d
cathysaid I was surprised by A Killing in the Hills. I was a bit judgy based on the cover and description but it turned out to be better than I expected. 3d
BarbaraBB Yes me too - for the same reasons. But it turned out to be a pick for me, I just posted my review. @cathysaid (edited) 3d
Cinfhen Nice reading week and sometimes a bail is a blessing!! Makes time for a better book 💕😊 3d

I haven‘t updated my #ReadingUSA2019 map in awhile. I‘ve added 6 more states. I‘m up to 23. May get a few more in before year‘s end. Not too bad for just seeing where my reading takes me. I read a lot of Southern fiction and books set in NYC.
Washington- The Night Olivia Fell
South Dakota- Finding Dorothy
Pennsylvania- As Bright As Heaven
Michigan- Finding Chika
Louisiana- A Christmas Memory
North Dakota- A Christmas Blizzard

ljuliel Great job ! I sorta fizzled out on mine. I was going along at a pretty good clip until Life came along and got my off kilter. I‘m thinking of starting all over again for the coming year to see if I can do better this time. 4d
megnews @ljuliel I know they‘re doing #readingeurope2020 but I‘ve been thinking about trying USA again too. I wasn‘t intentional in planning because I read where interest takes me and I‘m notoriously bad at reading challenges. I tend to the South & NYC. If there was a challenge for that, I‘d be done in March!! 4d
ljuliel You and me both on challenges. I start out good, but crash and burn along the way. I almost signed up for the new one, but told myself I need to do this one first. I signed up for @MrBook ‘s. one, which is only one book a month. Maybe I‘ll start the USA one fresh again. I get you about the Southern books. I like books by Southern authors, so tend to read lots set down there. 4d

Librarybelle Nicely done! 4d
squirrelbrain Why start again @ljuliel @megnews ? Just continue on into next year... gives you a great head start 😁 And I know what you mean - I read *so* many books set in NYC! 4d
MrBook 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 You‘re doing awesome! 4d

Clara is suddenly yanked from her home and placed in a facility, questioned repeatedly by strangers. Her situation quickly becomes apparent, but the true horror gradually unfolds through alternating timelines. A great psychological thriller that does get dark and violent.

ljuliel Good for you ! How many states do you have left ? 6d
BarbaraBB Echoing @ljuliel I am curious too! 6d

Hooked_on_books @ljuliel @BarbaraBB Two to go! Kentucky and Rhode Island. I have the books picked out and in a prominent location so they‘ll stare at me until I read them. 😆 6d
BarbaraBB So good! I am starting West Virginia right now and then only Maryland and Missouri left! 6d
squirrelbrain Yay! Another one bites the dust...! 6d
ljuliel Great job @Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB You guys are doing terrific and you‘ll both have time to complete this. 📚 6d
Pamwurtzler Good job! 5d

Finished this audiobook today! It definitely helped to pass 2 hours of shoveling today. I really enjoyed this cozy holiday mystery! I liked the town and all the characters in Mistletoe. And the mystery and romance was good. The one thing I couldn‘t stand, was her Boston accent. The sheriff was from Boston and her accent for him was just awful! I want to listen to more but dunno if I can stand it

Laughterhp #ReadingUSA2019 - the author is from OH so I actually get to color in another state on my map! @Librarybelle 7d

Close Range is a solid story collection exhibiting the harsh brutality of life in #Wyoming. Reading this, it‘s not hard to wonder why it‘s the state with the smallest population yet is 9th in total land area. There is some brief casual violence here and this definitely isn‘t for everyone, but I quite liked it.

BarbaraBB Great review. Sounds interesting. 1w

Tamra I loved the collection! 1w
squirrelbrain Sounds like a good one - and another one ticked off the list! 1w
jessinikkip Sounds good, I may see if the library has a copy, I still need that state 1w
Hooked_on_books @jessinikkip Cool! The author is from Wyoming, so one of her novels would work as well if they don‘t have this one. 1w

Excellent reading month for me. Of the 32 read, 18 were non-fiction. I also finished up my #LitsyAtoZ and find myself with only 2 states left for #ReadingUSA2019.

ljuliel You are on fire 🔥. 1w
Addison_Reads @ljuliel Litsy has really pushed me to read more, and introduced me to audiobooks which I love while working or cleaning. I see everyone talking about all these amazing books and I just can't wait to read them too. 1w
rachelm Amazing job!!! 1w
Scochrane26 Which states are left? 1w
Addison_Reads @Scochrane26 I'm reading a book for Montana and then I just have Wyoming left. 1w

#WeeklyForecast 49/19

A new month means another bit of Proust and I am reading the marvellous Red At the Bone. I am not sure what to read next. Another #1001books maybe or one of the ultimate ones for #ReadingUSA2019? Or the Korean thriller I just have been looking forward to?

I‘ll keep you posted of course!

I notice now that four of the five books pictured have a silhouette on their cover. What a coincidence!

Cinfhen Pretty photo 🥰lots of good options 1w
batsy I enjoyed The Good Son quite a bit, though enjoy seems the wrong word to use 😅 1w
rmaclean4 Loved Red At The Bone. It is a book that has really stayed with me. 1w
BarbaraBB @rmaclean4 I just finished it and loved it too! 1w
BarbaraBB @batsy I‘m so looking forward to that one! 1w
