Mill on the Floss
Mill on the Floss | George Eliot
In "The Mill on the Floss," George Eliot re-creates her own childhood through the story of the wild, gifted Maggie Tulliver and her spoiled, selfish brother. Though tragic in its outcome, this tenderly comic novel combines vivid vignettes of family life with a magnificent portrait of the heroine and an acute critique of Victorian sexual politics.Eliot had no peer when it came to finding the drama at the heart of normal lives lived in tandem with the gigantic rhythms of nature itself, and in "The Mill on the Floss" she shows us once again how thoroughly the art of fiction can satisfy our deepest mental and emotional cravings. Leftcoastzen Like sands through the hourglass! 😁 2d
KAO I kept having to reread sentences, as my mind wandered pitifully during this short chapter. Thank goodness this didn‘t go on longer! I liked the last bit, however, about how the spiritual seed of wisdom didn‘t find fertile ground (or “hooks”) in Mr. Tulliver and simply blew away without taking hold. More foreshadowing, I presume! 2d
Bookwormjillk I know I read this chapter but I don‘t remember a bit. #MovingOn 2d
Ruthiella It was a lot of bla bla bla only to show that Mr. Tulliver is unchristian in thought, if not in deed. 1d

dabbe This novel takes a Gothic turn when #tetchytully states that the river gets angry when the mill changes hands, and “there's no telling whether there mayn't be summat in the story, for this is a puzzling world, and Old Harry's the devil got a finger in it.“

More reference to the river--not in a good way. #yikes 😱

Clare-Dragonfly They are all so mean! I wish it had occurred to Tom to mention that he‘s good at drawing, especially things like buildings. I bet that could get him a good start. 6d
Leftcoastzen Much better to have less family than a family like this ! Poor Tom trying to do what he can while listening to Uncle belittling his education. 6d
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - I felt the same way! I get that you don't want to hand a pile of money to people who have proven that they aren't going to use it wisely, but Tom is genuinely trying to make good and start providing for his mom and sister, and I thought it was dreadful the way his uncle just blew him off. 6d
ElizaMarie This chapter felt very current to me. It's like kiddos get an education and then can't get a job with their education. I know it's not the same, but it got me thinking about how some college courses/majors do not translate to the working world. I feel so bad for Tom - also this #TheirFamilySucks ! 5d

#WhereAreYouMonday

Apparently based on Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, I am still with Maggie Tulliver and co. in the mid 19th century reading for #HashtagBrigade . The “real river” is the Trent and it is quite imposing looking. “Floss” sounds so sweet and gentle. But the Trent is known for its dramatic flooding that can even change the course of the river.

KAO While reading this chapter, I felt a bizarre reminder of the rich patriarch of the family visiting the White Lotus resort in the latest season of this show—about how he received news that his fortune had been lost and he didn‘t want to tell his privileged family and about how tortured he was by the sheer anticipation of financial ruin… Yes, I confess having watched the whole series! 2w

mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks this is the story that goes with Lark Rise‘s accounting lists. Also I‘m some mad at Glegg calling in her money and poor sister Tulliver living in squalor has to figure out some way to magic cost savings out of thin air 3w

mcctrish This chapter just had me mad, Mr Tulliver telling Mrs Tulliver to invite them all and she‘s like “the work of it, more food to make, leaves for the table, dishes to get out” and no one‘s helping her and none of them get along as he puts on his hat and strides off 4w
rubyslippersreads If there‘s animal abuse (especially cats), I think it was the right choice for me to skip this. 😼 4w
ElizaMarie I hated Tom with his little mind games with his sister here. She adores him. And did everything she thought she could to make him happy - offered him the better piece and everything! Ugh! He is mean. 4w
TheAromaofBooks Honestly both Tom and Maggie scare me in their own ways 😂 4w
Morr_Books I am weirded out by the conversations between Maggie and Tom. It seems more like a marriage than a sibling relationship. 4w
Morr_Books A lot of serial killer tendencies (killing of animals, etc.) with some of these characters. Not at all what I was expecting from this book. 4w
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books 💯 on both, I definitely wondered about the serial killer aspect 🤣 should be interesting to see how this progresses 4w
Bookwormjillk @Morr_Books yes! Total serial killer vibes! You nailed it. 4w
Leftcoastzen Those boys bring out the worst in each other ! Animal abuse, horrible. 3w

Bookwormjillk I don‘t think he was wrong though about the rabbits? Oh well. 4w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk definitely not wrong! 4w
See All 15 Comments
dabbe I worry about Maggie. She ignores the rabbits and lets them starve to death and takes out her aggressions by stabbing a doll voodoo-style while in the attic. This can not bode well for her psyche. And Tom loving-hating her within minutes. Granted, what she did to the rabbits was awful, but still. 4w
Bklover @Bookwormjillk @dabbe You‘re right about the rabbits. I‘m even mad at her for that! But I hate all of this “I won‘t love you anymore”. Even mom says it. Anyway. I just wanted to mention the last sentence of the chapter is gorgeous! It‘s the narrator speaking about childhood memories. 4w
BarkingMadRead @Bklover the writing is just beautiful! 4w
dabbe @Bklover 🤩😍🤗 4w
Morr_Books I may have an unpopular view, but I'm kinda on team Tom... for this chapter. 4w
ElizaMarie AND the mom quickly again goes to Maggie Drowned! What is with the drowning, maybe her momma lost her sister to drowning. Or do people just up and drown all the time? Is drowning the new boogieman? 4w
BarkingMadRead @ElizaMarie I really hope we get some clarity on this, I need me a good backstory! 4w
mcctrish @Morr_Books I‘m team Tom too! He asked 2 people to check on his rabbits and they both let him down 👎🏻👎🏻 and he‘s not allowed to be upset ( mom is a bit theatrical with the drowning ) 4w
Clare-Dragonfly @ElizaMarie I think it‘s just because they live close to a river, but maybe there is something… 4w
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly Oo that makes more sense than it being something more nefarious. 4w
Leftcoastzen Why doesn‘t mom just say stay away from the river ! If my mom said stay away from the river , she would have told me why , and I would have stayed away from the river ! 😁 4w
Leftcoastzen I was miffed everyone let Tom down as well , it was a simple ask , Maggie is young but should have been able to look after a couple of rabbits. The parents don‘t look after her , I know people had plenty of work in those days. 4w

Happy #Chatterday ☕️

I'm bimbling in the garden, tidying up and sowing seeds in between catching up with #buddyreads

What are your plans for today?

All welcome to join in. 😊

Tagging a few to start us of @thebookhippie @dabbe @Bookwormjillk @Cuilin @Chrissyreadit @Librarybelle

Bookwormjillk What are you planting? Enjoy your day! I‘m heading out for a stream clean up then taking some rest. There‘s a tall ships tour tonight we might go see if it‘s not raining. 4w
Librarybelle Have a great day! I‘m hoping for a lot of rest—Zeke took another bad turn yesterday, after several good days, so hanging with kitties and rest are on my agenda. 4w
ElizaMarie Just having my coffee in bed. Not sure what my day plans are yet. Its a bit rainy out 4w
See All 42 Comments
Cuilin Thankfully I‘m feeling so much better as my husband bought me and my daughters tickets to see Snow Patrol in Boston. He‘s our chauffeur so we have a ride to and from MGM Fenway. I‘ll probably spend most of tomorrow sleeping. Lol 4w
Bookwormjillk @Librarybelle sorry Zeke is having a bad day 4w
Deblovestoread @LibraryBelle Sorry to hear Zeke had a bad day. Hope both of you are able to rest. @Cuilin. Love Snow Patrol so much! Enjoy! Glad you are feeling better, too. (edited) 4w
AllDebooks @Bookwormjillk Oh wow, I hope you get to see the tour. I'm starting with sunflowers, nasturtiums and wildflowers. 4w
AllDebooks @Librarybelle Poor Zeke (and you)! Sending much love x 4w
AllDebooks @ElizaMarie Always a good start to a day x 4w
AllDebooks @Cuilin Yay, I'm so glad you're feeling better. Enjoy Snow Patrol 😊 4w
Deblovestoread I‘m getting caffeinated under my heated throw with Pippin in my lap. Once I log off Litsy I‘ll read a bit and then get ready to go to a local Hands Off protest. I‘m a bit nervous as I‘ve always used my voice and protested from the safety of my home but I can‘t ignore this call to action. 4w
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk as a shanty singer‘s daughter I love a tall ships festival. 4w
Cuilin @Librarybelle sending love for you and Zeke. 4w
Cuilin @ElizaMarie ugh the weather is so blah today in Keene. 4w
Cuilin @Deblovestoread thanks, yesterday I managed to leave the house. It was for bloodwork but still I felt really good. Well done on attending the protest!!!! Stay safe. 4w
Librarybelle Thanks, @Cuilin ! ❤️ 4w
dabbe @Bookwormjillk Sounds like a busy and beautiful day! 🩵💙🩵 4w
dabbe @Librarybelle Oh, no. Poor Zeke. Hope you and your four babies cuddle together all day. 🩵💙🩵 4w
dabbe @ElizaMarie I love when the entire day is open like that. The world is your oyster! 🩵💙🩵 4w
dabbe @Cuilin Yay to you getting out for a fun event with your family! 🤩🤩🤩 4w
dabbe @Deblovestoread You go, girl! I know exactly how you feel. I love to protest through letter-writing or something more quiet. You've inspired me! 👊🏻♥️👊🏻 4w
dabbe Matt is just getting over a cold, so we're probably taking it easy today. I have lots of buddy reads to catch up with, and I just got him the last Gamache book, so he's already diving into that. I introduced them to him, and I'm only on book 6, and he's on the last one! 🤣

Thanks for the tag, @Alldebooks! 😍 I'm glad it's a lovely day for planting where you are! 🩵💙🩵
4w
Librarybelle Thank you, @dabbe ! ❤️ 4w
DebinHawaii I was out supporting local artists & the economy by spending money on their works. 😉 The winds are bringing VOG over from the Big island this week so limiting my outside time & taking extra preventative meds since I‘ll be there overnight Monday/Tuesday & back again on Friday & it‘s close to the volcano so worse than here. Having a relaxing day to recover from the week & gear up for the next one. 4w
DebinHawaii @Librarybelle So sorry Zeke took a bad turn. Hope you can rest & he feels better soon! 💜 4w
Librarybelle Thank you, @DebinHawaii ! ❤️ 4w
ElizaMarie @Deblovestoread Your day sounded so great! Did you end up going to the #HandsOff Protest? My husband and I flaked on the time. WE thought it started around 1 not ended around 1 :( 4w
ElizaMarie @Cuilin It was!!! I ended up cleaning my mudroom. I am determined that Winter is over (I know it's not quite there yet, but soonish), So I started to clean my mittens, scarves, and hats and put a lot of that stuff away. Still gotta keep some winter-sh stuff out. But my mudroom was a dumping ground - so there was a ton to go through. 4w
ElizaMarie @dabbe We got a lot done - organizing-wise. Not what we had planned. We wanted to go to the protest but flaked on the time. We ended up going to lunch, and then finishing our mudroom cleanout. 4w
ElizaMarie @dabbe Awe - I hope Matt feels better soon. 4w
Cuilin @ElizaMarie There‘s nothing like a little spring clean up. Just don‘t look at the weather forecasted for the next 10 days 🙈 and all will be well. 4w
Deblovestoread @ElizaMarie I did go with two friends and it was amazing. Brought me to tears a couple of times. We were lucky to have a gorgeous day. One of the best things I‘ve ever done. 4w
Deblovestoread @ElizaMarie I LOVE a good clean up day especially putting away winter stuff. 4w
TheBookHippie Out protesting yesterday!!! As one does. @Deblovestoread YAAAAAS!!! As a decades -holy shit FOUR DECADES- protestor … welcome to the resistance. 4w
TheBookHippie @Cuilin the snow forecasted 😵‍💫 4w
TheBookHippie @Cuilin omg!!! Snow Patrol!! 4w
ElizaMarie @Cuilin It make me so mad!!! Also, I need to get my studs off my tires, which I think it would be “safe“ to set up an appointment in a week or two. 4w
ElizaMarie @Deblovestoread I am so happy that you ended up going. I wish we were better at the timing, I saw pics of our town and the neighboring towns and it looks beautiful to see all the support out there. (It was rainy and ugly but there was a good turn out) 4w
TheBookHippie @Cuilin I‘m glad you‘re feeling some better! Yay. 4w

Ruthiella Yes, those poor bunnies. 🐰 💔Also th image of a child driving nails into a doll out of anger scares me a little. 😬 But those were different days. 4w
mcctrish She‘s going to live with her brother so she can keep Tom up to speed in life 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 ( although she forgot to feed his rabbits so maybe he won‘t want her !) 4w
dabbe And it's now the second time the mom has been afraid that Maggie has drowned. Should I be worried about this? 😬 4w
Bklover @Ruthiella Maggie is very entertaining, but I have to admit she scares me a little. I wouldn‘t want to be up in that attic with her! 😬 (edited) 4w
Bookwormjillk Maggie is a little bit scary but I can‘t decide yet if she‘s adorable scary or don‘t leave her alone with small children scary. 4w
ElizaMarie Oh Maggie!!! She is a different one. 4w
Clare-Dragonfly The poor bunnies 😭😭😭 4w
Leftcoastzen I‘m with @Bookwormjillk 😵‍💫so sad about the rabbits. Maggie is baffled by Luke‘s lack of curiosity about the world. I guess he‘s satisfied with his lot. 4w

mcctrish #fathandsriley I‘m with Maggie and thinking he‘s not worth listening to 1mo
Bklover @TheAromaofBooks I agree- I‘m feeling very sorry for Tom right now. 1mo
dabbe We haven't even met Tom yet and already we're feeling bad for him! And this is another one where it sucks to be a female in the 1800s! 😊 1mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe I was so glad I read this in the hotel instead of bringing it into Disney, I was yelling at the book 🤣 1mo
ElizaMarie (I am not getting the tags; can you re-add me). Anyway, I love Maggie. Poor girl :( “A woman's no business wi' being so clever; it'll turn to trouble.“ - Also, I love how Tom is trying to talk himself into thinking he made the right choice to give them the recommendation. 1mo
dabbe @BarkingMadRead 🤣😍🤣 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I really want Tom and Maggie to switch places like Alanna and her brother! She would be much better suited to scholarship! 1mo
Morr_Books I found myself being very suspicious of Mr. Riley. Maybe it is cuz Maggie didn't like him. 1mo
Leftcoastzen 🙄poor Maggie , poor Tom . I think this Mr. Riley isn‘t reliable, does he get a cut for finding students? I‘m with @Dabbe it sucks to be a girl in the 1800s 4w
dabbe @Leftcoastzen Talk about a patriarchal world, right? #oy 4w
Sparklemn Riley can tell himself that he‘s being magnanimous by recommending the clergy as tutor to Tom. But I think this is going to be an “you scratch my back and I‘ll scratch yours” scenario. 4w
Sparklemn @Clare-Dragonfly I agree 👍 (edited) 4w
Sparklemn @Morr_Books He was so dismissive of her reading. Blech. 4w

ElizaMarie I love the whole convo with the mole! “its puzzling work, talking is“. 😂 1mo
dabbe This quote scares me from the mother: “Maggie, Maggie ... you'll tumble and be drowned some day, an' then you'll be sorry you didn't do as mother told you.“ 😳 1mo
eeclayton As a non-native speaker, I found this chapter a bit difficult to read. I may need to switch to a translation if characters keeps speaking like this. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @eeclayton the language was definitely rough. I had to read a couple lines twice! 1mo
Leftcoastzen I already feel sorry for Maggie 1mo
Ruthiella @eeclayton I am a native speaker and I found some of the sentences tough to parse! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Poor Maggie, so poorly behaved that her hair won‘t even curl! 🙄😂 1mo
mcctrish “I‘d be sorry for him to be a raskill ( lawyer)” 🤣🤣🤣 1mo
Bklover Can you add me to the list please? 1mo
Bklover @dabbe No Mother of the Year award for her!!😉😂 1mo
dabbe @Bklover 🎯🤣🎯 1mo

Pickpick

I read most of this book on my commute but I was glad that I read the ending in the comfort of my bed so I could stare sadly out of my window at the rainy sky. I think, one of the strongest character of the book was Mr. Tulliver, not only did he carry the story along with his firm, decided views, but also provided as a strong connection between pretty much all the characters. His headstrong nature was, at once, plot- propelling and believable.👇🏽

truthinfiction I sorely missed him towards the end of the book where Maggie and Stephen Guest were carrying on their back and forth about the moral question that forms the crux of the novel. While the moral question remains immensely relevant even today, although perhaps it has lost its vigour that it holds in Maggie's mind, I found this turn of events a little disappointing. My expectations from the bold eyed, clever Maggie were vastly different from👇🏽 4y
truthinfiction vastly different from the simple dilemma of love that the problem actually turned out to be. But, this dilemma is actually more reasonable and realistic than any extravagant ideas I may have held. A difficult read but one that's worth reading and rereading because of George Eliot's shrewd insights into human nature and society at large. 4y
Nute Excellent review! Maybe the simple dilemma of love is the crux of all other more complicated concerns. 4y
truthinfiction @Nute Why, thank you, Kimberley! I suppose, you are right there. 3y
