The Sandman Vol. 2: The Doll's House
The Sandman Vol. 2: The Doll's House | Neil Gaiman, Various
NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Neil Gaiman's transcendent series SANDMAN is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling. Gaiman created an unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales with his own distinct narrative vision. A being that has existed since the beginning of the universe, Morpheus rules over the realm of dreams. In THE DOLL'S HOUSE, after a decades-long imprisonment, the Sandman has returned to find that a few dreams and nightmares have escaped to reality. Looking to recapture his lost possessions, Morpheus ventures to the human plane only to learn that a woman named Rose Walker has inadvertently become a dream vortex and threatens to rip apart his world. Now as Morpheus takes on the last escaped nightmare at a serial killers convention, the Lord of Dreams must mercilessly murder Rose or risk the destruction of his entire kingdom. Collecting issues #9-16, this new edition of THE DOLL'S HOUSE features the improved production values and coloring from the Absolute Edition.

Much better than Vol 1. The same mesmerizing artwork, but this time the story arc is more cohesive and stoked my curiosity as it went. I also thought the stories within each issue were stronger: I'm not a big fan of serial killer horror stories, but the 'Cereal Convention' was a creative take on this genre. I enjoyed the trip through time in 'Men of Good Fortune', even if it had little to do with the main story. And The Corinthian... 😨

I liked volume 2 a lot more than volume 1 and am looking forward to continuing with Sandman. Enjoyed this story about a vortex that needs to be controlled, which just so happens to be Rose, who is looking for her long lost brother.

Rose‘s story was the most interesting storyline for me, though there a bit more going on in addition to her story. I didn‘t find the Sandman parts as interesting, though he does intersect with Rose‘s story. On thinking back, I thought I had rated Vol. 1 lower than what I did. So, officially, I rated both volumes “good”, but I feel like I liked this one better, at least as compared to what I remember of the first one.

@Readergrrl I love everything thank you! Ahhh another copy of Saga! No worries though I appreciate all the thought that was behind it. And I‘m currently chewing on one of the caramels they‘re SO GOOD! Definitely my new favorite snack. I‘ve never read any of Neil Gaiman‘s works, so I‘m excited to dive into these!

Readergrrl So glad you liked everything!! Saga is so popular, it‘s hard not to get multiple copies! Now you‘ve got an extra to share....😊 This was a fun swap; I don‘t often get to peruse the graphic novel section at the book shop! Thanks for hosting!! And those salted caramels are to die for!!! Soooooo good! I may have bought a bag for myself too! 😉 (edited) 8mo

Volume2 Of The Sandman series was just as strange as Vol1. And just as good! Just like dreams, it twists and turns with strange people & circumstances, invented by a mind like Neil Gaimans. Sandman still looks like Robert Smith from The Cure👍

#BookMail Pt3 This is Vol2 of Neil Gaiman‘s “Sandman” series, another 30th Anniversary Edition to match my copy of Vol1. This is a very dark, 80s version of the Sandman legend, where he looks like Robert Smith from The Cure. Great art and great story.

LibrarianRyan Looks fun. Have you mailed the #travelingbook? 12mo

This next chapter in the story of The Sandman as he works to restore the dreaming after his imprisonment is stunning. The story just sucked me in from the first images...& that final riddle of are mortals the dolls of the Endless or are the Endless the dolls of mortals-beautiful.

I got the second installment of The Sandman today at an independent bookstore and received a free Norse Mythology poster! Yay for giveaways! I also couldn‘t resist the Borges tote bag as it‘s one of my favorite literary quotes. Plus, Borges is such a remarkable storyteller.

My Sandman re-read is going quite well thanks to hoopla. The Doll's House was always one of my favorite Sandman story lines. Volume 1 is good, but 2 and 3 are fantastic! It has been way too long since I have read these. I love reading Neil Gaiman comics. His writing style is a great match for the artwork here. Morpheus is an awesome character! Death is pretty great as well! I'm ready for volume 4!

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Yeah, you can really tell that he‘s figuring things out in Vol. 1. Then with Doll‘s House he‘s hit his stride. 2y

Volume 2 of the series down. It definitely is a weird series, but then Gaiman often is on the different side of things. It is starting to grow on me. I want to know what happens next. Still not knocking my socks off, but drawing me in slowly. And the art is very well done.

For a while there this was my favourite book in the series, partly because I see it as Sandman's heart (but definitely not its centre). So much of the story cascades out from this volume in dozens of spoilery ways. Every time I reread it, I marvel at how Gaiman kept all this in his brain for so many years. Well done, sir. Well done.

A big chunk of the book deals with a serial killer convention, so: trigger warning for everything. #comics

I've always loved this layout. As Rose slips into the Dreaming, the reader has to twist the book into landscape or get left behind.

I prefer digital comics in almost all respects, but stuff like this really does work better in print. Even if you've got your screen locked, turning a book packs a much bigger punch than turning a tablet. #comics

TricksyTails Do you subscribe to comiXology? 2y
xicanti @TricksyTails I can't do comiXology Unlimited because it's US-only, but I buy digital comics from them. 2y
TricksyTails That's right! I'm sorry. We've had this conversation! 🙈Since I'm no longer near comic stores I'm trying to see the best affordable way to read them. Thanks! Sorry for the brain fart! 2y
xicanti @TricksyTails I do use Marvel Unlimited because it's not region-locked, and I love it SO MUCH. It's a great alternative if you don't mind reading newer comics at a six-month delay. I dearly wish DC had something similar so I could really delve into their stuff. My library's pretty spotty when it comes to anything from before the New 52. 2y

Just learned that NY Times will be dropping the graphic novel & manga bestseller lists starting Feb 5. What The Hell. Such a shame considering all the amazing work being produced. I owe a lot of the titles sitting in my TBR stack to the awesome recommendations of everyone here. Platforms like Litsy seem all the more crucial now to spread word of gems in the GN department. Hope upcoming & existing works deserving of wider readership get visibility.

Pruzy That is strange! Especially because I thought graphic novel readership was on the rise! 3y

I think this may turn in to a Sandman marathon. It's quirky, it's weird, it's slightly (no, sometimes very) disturbing. I love it. The other volumes are sat on the bookshelf waiting for me, previously read by my husband, so why not?! He looks over my shoulder at certain pages (the Cereal Convention - interesting spelling there!) and says "Ah, that bit. That's a good bit". He's not wrong!

I don't think I could choose anything else for my #booktober "Fave Graphic Novels"... The Sandman series has a place of honor on my bookcase. I had very many of the original issues and, somewhere between high school (!) and the present day, replaced almost all of them with the graphic novels (with a few very treasured exceptions).
