Letters From Father Christmas
Letters From Father Christmas | J.R.R. Tolkien
97 posts | 72 read | 76 to read
Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkiens children. Inside would be a letter in a strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful colored drawing or painting. The letters were from Father Christmas. They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone North Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmass house into the dining room; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house, and many more.No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by Tolkiens inventiveness in this classic holiday treat.

This is a fantastic book filled with letters and drawings that Tolkien wrote to his children while pretending to be Santa.

Every December, posing as Father Christmas, Tolkien wrote a letter to his children. It may not be a novel exactly, but it‘s one of the books I‘m looking forward to reading this month, so I couldn‘t resist. #deardecember #epistolarynovel #wintergames #merryreaders

A lovely and amusing short read-“Father Christmas “ writes to the Tolkien children every winter describing his life at the North Pole. There are polar bears, elves & gnomes, cave-bears, and serious mischief from the goblins ❄️🎄

TheSpineView Cool. I stacked it read during the winter games.😊 2w
arlenefinnigan I loved this. The audiobook is lovely. Of course Tolkien invented a grouchy polar bear sidekick for Father Christmas. Of course he invented a fictional Arctic language. Of course Father Christmas has to battle hobgoblins. 2w

It may not be Christmas, but it feels like the North Pole. In addition to the copies of letters, envelopes, & drawings Tolkien sent to his children as Father Christmas, this Prime edition provided the ability to listen to the letters, too. It was a nice collection from a time when Christmas wasn't about getting the biggest Beebo doll on the shelf, but traditions, stories, and family. We also get some Tolkien world-building as the years pass.

So I usually just lurk but I have to share this. I've wanted to read this forever with my daughter and I just found it free on kindle unlimited si even though I want a physical copy I decided to cheak it out. This is so much better, the book includes audio that I found just magical. I'm closing the book now and saving it for my we one tonight. We may just have to start reading this ever Christmas even though it has already passed.

I would love if someone could had that creativity when I was a little girl. The book is simple but gentle on how Father Christmas maintained yearly correspondence with children.I think the content of these letters is a good folklore source to find out more about Father Christmas. Also you will have a little zeitgeist of those years, even the impact of the War was present in the letters content. Art print from @BookBabe 3.7⭐️love the illustrations

This is a photo of J.R.R. Tolkien and his beloved children. I am so thankful that Litsy brought this charming book to me. In fact, if it had not been for Litsy, I would have never read any Tolkien! In my mind, his writing was for boys who love battles and dragons. I was so wrong! He created this beautifully illustrated tale of Santa at the North Pole answering the Christmas letters of Tolkien ‘s real life children. A master storyteller and father!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! He did a great job using stories his boys would like, yes with adventures and dragons to keep their attention, but he also did a great job of weaving in some great wit, humor, and some wonderful themes that I‘ve found resonate no matter your age or gender. 11mo

Aww, the last letter is so sad. I think Tolkien was really sad to stop writing to his kids at Christmas. Sadness filtered in also in previous letters as his older kids fell out of the habit. But Priscilla is the younger and once she dropped the habit to write to Father Christmas, it was really over.

It was a wonderful book, and l'm not just talking about the stories and the illustrations.

I loved this one, just the perfect little stories for the season, and of course Tolkien wrote adorable letters to his children from Father Christmas, that included hilarious sidekicks, attacks by goblins, and a few new languages. His kids got not only stories and pictures, but cryptograms, and adventures, but also towards the end a great sense of empathy about the other children who had much less during the war years.

This was a wonderful holiday read, and I will definitely be reading it again for Christmas in the years to come. There is so much love and time evident in these letters. The artwork is beautiful! The ones with more complex stories in the middle were my favorite, but I appreciate that Tolkien also referenced the difficulties in the world during times of depression and war.

Love the illustration!
Tolkien's letters are becoming more melancholy and l find it really moving that tge war affected him so much that he even talks about it in these Christmas letters to his young daughter.
I remember that when l visited the exhibition in Oxford, l read that he volunteered to help refugee. And of course his sons were fighting in the war.
Much of the joviality of the first letters has gone.

Really really enjoyed the letter from 1932. I love the way both the real world (with the indirect mention of the Great Depression) and Tolkien's own world (l think this belongs to the letters influenced by the Hobbit Rateliff spoke of in his book) enter the Letters from Father Christmas.
Imagine the marvel of reality and fantasy coming together for this children. I envy them.
