One-In-A-Million Boy
One-In-A-Million Boy | Monica Wood
The incandescent story of a 104-year-old woman and the sweet, strange young boy assigned to help her around the house a friendship that touches each member of the boy s unmoored family For years, guitarist Quinn Porter has been on the road, chasing gig after gig, largely absentto his twice-ex-wife Belle and their odd, Guinness records obsessed son. When the boy dies suddenly, Quinn seeks forgiveness for his paternal shortcomings by completing the requirements for his son s unfinished Boy Scout badge. For seven Saturdays, Quinn does yard work for Ona Vitkus, the wily 104-year-old Lithuanian immigrant the boy hadvisited weekly.Quinn soon discovers that the boy had talked Ona into gunning for theworld record for Oldest Licensed Driver and that s the least of her secrets. Despite himself, Quinn picks up where the boy left off, forging a friendship with Ona that allows him to know the son he never understood, a boy who was always listening, always learning."The One-in-a-Million Boy"is a richly layered novel ofhearts broken seemingly beyond repair and then bound by a stunning act of human devotion."

#JulyWrapUp

Had a bit of a reading slump this month, but a re-read of the tagged book for a bookclub ended up being the perfect #slumpbuster !

I read a couple of fantastic cookbooks, and also really liked The Girl on the Page, a gift from a lovely Litten...

Favorite new-to-me fiction read was the 5⭐️ ‘The Nickel Boys‘ by Colson Whitehead.... I‘m looking forward to discussing it at the B&N bookclub I‘ll be hosting on August 13th....📚💕

Cathythoughts This doesn‘t look like a reading slump 🤔📚📚📚Well done !! I must get a copy of The Chain ! I‘m in need of a decent thriller 👍🏻♥️ 3w
KarenUK @cathythoughts The Chain is fun and a really well done thriller.... very pacy, edge of your seat stuff. 👍 3w
britt_brooke Looks like a great month still! What did you think about Educated? I think I‘m one of the few that didn‘t love it. 3w

KarenUK @britt_brooke I‘m with you on this one.... did not love it, and although I think her achievements are great, didn‘t think the book was that special... 3w
britt_brooke @KarenUK Completely agree. 3w
CarolynM The Girl on the Page was an interesting one. I liked a lot of it, but some of it made me cringe! 3w
KarenUK @CarolynM I kept thinking I shouldn‘t be liking this as much as I am! 3w

My book haul from 2nd and Charles on Sunday. I technically only went there to get a gift card for a friend, but y‘all know how that goes. I can‘t pass up a buy 5 used books, get 5 free deal. The two in the middle are books I‘ve been on the library waitlist for a while so those are some fun finds and the rest are just whatever struck my fancy - fantasy, animals, classics, etc.

Buechersuechtling Let us (me 😉) know how you like(d) Sarah Dessen‘s “Saint Anything”, please. 🙇🏽‍♀️ 3w

Reread for a bookclub- just as good as I remembered.
I again fell in love with this lovely cast of characters. Ona, feisty and 104 years young, Quinn the absentee father, Belle the broken and grieving mother, and the unnamed, World-record-obsessed boy.
This wonderful story of grief and friendship, just spoke to me so completely. And I just love Quinn as a character. His complex feelings of grief, guilt, honor and duty were so moving. Recommended👍

Overall a very heartwarming and touching story. It dragged a little in the middle and frankly, Quinn did almost nothing to impress me as a character. He was mostly self absorbed and kind of cold. Ona, the boy and the way that the author chose to end the book saved it all. The ending was heartbreaking and beautiful. I would still highly recommend this book and the audio was amazing. #audiobook #tearjerker #hoopla

‘Upstairs, gaining strength by the second, lay Quinn‘s inheritance, left to the father from the son: an old woman suddenly missing home.‘
This is the story of a boy, a son and his relationship with his father and his friendship with an elderly lady of 104.
This book made my heart sing! The ending was just perfect! The characters felt so real and they made me cry, smile and cry some more.

Initially I found the book charming but it quickly wore off as the book focused more on the father and characters other than the old woman and young boy. Ultimately the charm left with the boy and it made a book that was already longer than it should have been feel that much longer.

I devoured this in two days. The only reason this is impressive is because I have toddlers and a job 😂 But I was completely invested in each character. I loved their stories. I loved their faults. I cried for them. I cried with them. This one is going to hang around with me for a while.

Kelleyisreading It was so good!! I‘m intrigued the boy wasn‘t given a name by the author and somehow think that was quite clever. 10mo
MandaChittles @Kelleyisreading - I didn‘t even realise this until after I‘d finished the novel. 10mo
MandaChittles @Kelleyisreading - you think it means no one ever really knew him or understood him? 10mo
Kelleyisreading @MandaChittles Perhaps! I was wondering if she was trying to ensure that the boy wasn‘t the main character. Well he was, but not really. His memory was but the real story seemed to be how others perceived him and how he brought them all together. 10mo

I loved this book. So hard!

Home from work this afternoon making lasagna for 30, and I finished on audio. I have a massive tbr so often read books years after I get them—I should have read this years ago.

A contender for best book I‘ve read this year.

These two books have absolutely nothing in common, except...I finished both yesterday, they‘re both great, and they both brought me to tears on multiple occasions. I read The One-in-a-Million Boy, a beautifully written novel, for my book club and have SO many quotations marked! House Arrest, a YA/middle-grade novel in verse, is the journal of a boy that details the year after he steals a wallet. (I stayed up waaayy too late finishing this one!)
