Mother-Daughter Murder Night
Mother-Daughter Murder Night: A Novel | Nina Simon
The Maid meets The Last Thing He Told Me in this fun, fresh, and twisty debut whodunnit about a grandmother-mother-daughter trio who come together as amateur sleuths to solve a murder in their coastal California town. "A lively and tender story of family that Simon deftly transforms into an edge-of-your-seat murder mystery... One part The Maid and one part family drama la The Nest, Mother-Daughter Murder Night is a resounding and impressive triumph."--Katy Hays, New York Times bestselling author of The Cloisters Nothing brings a family together like a murder next door. High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she's built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage--and hoping that boredom won't kill her before the cancer does. Then Jack--tiny in stature but fiercely independent--happens upon a dead body while kayaking near their bungalow. Jack quickly becomes a suspect in the homicide investigation, and the Rubicon women are thrown into chaos. Beth thinks Lana should focus on recovery, but Lana has a better idea. She'll pull on her wig, find the true murderer, protect her family, and prove she still has power. With Jack and Beth's help, Lana uncovers a web of lies, family vendettas, and land disputes lurking beneath the surface of a community populated by folksy conservationists and wealthy ranchers. But as their amateur snooping advances into ever-more dangerous territory, the headstrong Rubicon women must learn to do the one thing they've always resisted: depend on each other.

I liked this. The mystery isn't terribly compelling (and the cops are ridiculous) but the interpersonal relationships between these three generations of women- and their very different ways of looking at the world- made me happy. I'll be interested in reading the next in the series to see which direction the author takes these characters.

Reese‘s Book Club has yet to steer me wrong. I haven‘t read all of her picks but the ones I have read I have enjoyed. This was a mystery that has twist all along the way and I enjoyed every minute of it. This book had been on my radar since I heard about it before it was published and I couldn‘t wait to read it. I listened to the audiobook and it was very good.

Popular mysteries don't always work well for me. I listened to this one, and while it was entertaining, I kept wanting more depth to the characters and to the mystery.

I was expecting a bit more on the "fun" side as well, but even that felt lackluster and forced.

I'm sure, though, that many people will love it for its easy, predictable readability.

It‘s mystery/thriller grid time for me! But it was picturing 3 generations of Gilmore Girls solving a murder that gets the tag as my fav!

5* = Loved It, want to shout out loud about this book! I do/will own/keep a physical copy. A+
4*= I liked it, would love to discuss. Solid B
3*=Meh, no need to discuss. Avg C
2*=Nope D
1*=DNF F

AmandaBlaze Glad someone else liked The Stranger Upstairs even if the MC was a bit...extra throughout the book. (edited) 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures Ohh great books on this grid! 1w
marleed @ChaoticMissAdventures It‘s been such fun. My TBR this year seems to getter bigger threefold for each book I‘ve read. I deliberately pushed some mysteries, thrillers, and fantasies out to Sep and Oct. it‘s been a fun month and October is still calling! 1w
marleed @AmandaBlaze oh yes, Sarah was extra! 1w

This fun cozy murder mystery follows three generations of women living together after the matriarch, Lana, is diagnosed with lung cancer. The formidable real-estate tycoon and her daughter Beth are constantly at odds, but when teenage Jack discovers a dead body during a kayak tour, they come together to pick apart what really happened. It took me a minute to warm up to Lana but eventually she won me over just as she does everyone else.

This was a light mystery that I found entertaining, particularly as it did not become too zany as many of this type of books do. While there was humour, there were still serious moments. I enjoyed the main characters and the comp to 'The Gilmore Girls' with murder is appropriate. I would be happy to read a sequel as I think the characters are the real star here and there is room to develop them more. Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the ARC. 3.75

I was recommending even before Reese!

A grandma and her daughter and granddaughter become a trio of mystery solvers after overcoming their own dysfunctional relationships. Hopefully the start of a new cozy series!

Thank you to NetGalley & William Morrow for an advance digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

Lana finds herself living with daughter Beth and granddaughter Jack in a way that seriously cramps her style when Jack is part of a group that finds a body on the mudflats. Lana decides to investigate, throwing the family into further chaos. I really enjoyed this! It‘s a lot of fun with good characters, though I wish Beth had been a little more fleshed out.

jlhammar I've been curious about this. Sounds fun! 2w

The many details of the potential land grab of a dead guy‘s ranch started to bore me here. But the characters - main and side -are enough to garner this a pick. An insta post sold me on the book by writing - think 3 generations of Gilmore Girls solving a murder - and that‘s what I thought the whole time. …I do think think is prime for a fun screen adaptation by Reese and Co.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

This cozy murder mystery is at its best when focusing on the family dynamics of the Rubicon women. I thought Lana especially stole the show! Learning that the author wrote this as an escape for her and her mom while her mom was battling cancer makes the story even more heartwarming. 🎧 #reesesbookclub

I suspect I'm just not a huge fan of the amateur detective genre. I can't seem to allow the suspension of belief in a contemporary novel that doesn't include magic of any kind. This will likely be enjoyed better by others who seek out the unordinary sleuths, and it was written well. I appreciate how this book came to be, as mentioned in acknowledgments, and the author herself is quite impressive. I would read her next novel.

While this one wasn‘t quite the murdery adventure I initially imagined, I did enjoy the story of three generations of Rubicon women coming together to solve a murder in their backyard of the Elkhorn Slough in CA. Lana, a glamorous real estate mogul joins her nurse and single mother daughter and granddaughter, Jack, at their home for the first time and when a body washes ashore, solving the crime helps heal the wounds of their own relationships!
