Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop
Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop | Jenny Colgan
24 posts | 11 read | 7 to read
Your most delightful holiday read: the sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller The Christmas Bookshop, from beloved Scottish author Jenny Colgan. Christmas comes early--far too early--to McCredie's little Old Town bookshop in Edinburgh. It's summer, but an American production company has decided that McCredie's is the perfect location to film a very cheesy Christmas movie. After all, who can resist the charmingly narrow historic street with its Victorian grey stone buildings and warmly lit shop windows? Carmen Hogan, the bookshop's manager, is amused and a bit horrified by the goings-on, but the money the studio is paying is too good to pass up. She uses the little windfall from filming to create new displays and fend off a buyout offer from an obnoxious millionaire who wants to turn McCredie's into a souvenir shop selling kilts made in China and plastic Nessies. Still reeling slightly from a breakup, Carmen's not particularly looking forward to the holidays. But just as snow begins to fall and the lights of Christmas blink on, all sorts of lovely new possibilities present themselves...for McCredie's bookstore, and for Carmen herself.

KadaGul @Read4life I am glad you enjoyed Jenny Colgan. She is my go to for anytime I need to decompress from work or if I read something that made me sad. Sometimes her books has European slang or references that I have to look 👀 to make sure I understand the context. #jennycolgan 3mo

This book started out slow but had some funny and cringe moments. I would love to see the house and books shop that is in here.

What a lovely holiday it‘s been! The sequel was wonderful. I like the first one but the second is even more life-affirming &, of course, magical ✨

Our whole holiday has been difficult but also the best one yet. I‘ve been struggling lately, doing too much, but I am so grateful for everyone in my life. Things might be hard but we‘re so very lucky 🍀

I love Jenny Colgan! Her Christmas books are especially fun and sweet and charming. This one, unfortunately, did not live up to some of her other stories, which was especially disappointing after how much I adored The Christmas Bookshop. I just found the main character especially whiny this time and the miscommunication trope to heavily used (which I find annoying). Still, I did enjoy it overall. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 #wintergames #SantasBookshELVES

peanutnine A shame it didn't live up to expectations 😕 I just started the Christmas Bookshop today! 4mo
candc320 @peanutnine I know, I was so sad! The Christmas Bookshop was great, though, so I hope you love it! 4mo

Finished last night, I think I might have enjoyed this sequel even more than the 1st book. The audiobook makes a sweet & engaging holiday read, although Carmen‘s often crabby & snarky attitude & the humor (especially from new character Rudi & the kids) keep it from being too sweet. Jenny Colgan‘s books, particularly the holiday ones are always like a warm hug in book form.🎄📚💚 Read the 1st book if you haven‘t.

📖 What are reading as we officially move into winter?
Still working through my December TBR. I like to read a few holiday reads & cozy mysteries—lighter fare.📚

📖 Do you have any reading rituals for the solstice?
Cozy blankets, a cup of tea with mellow seasonal music.❄️

📖 Do you enjoy a different reading format at this time of year?
I like to listen to more audio books like the tagged book, a current read ⬇️

MittenGirlPeach I‘m going to cuddle up and read today with tea. I‘m working on Helen Fields‘ Perfect Remains (not very cozy but very good!). I‘ve been sick but today I‘m feeling like reading. 4mo

Very good. Full of festive cheer and warmth. The story starts with a few chapters on what the characters have been up to since the first book (The Christmas Bookshop) which is good as it felt like it was building up to the main Christmas story without it being rushed and was helpful in getting you back into the story of these characters and setting the scene for the main story.

I spent the evening with Cooper and his brothers. They were sleeeeepy after a day at doggie daycare, so I had plenty of time to read the second half of Jenny Colgan‘s latest Christmas story. This sequel wasn‘t quite as good as the first, but it‘s still packed with fun little moments and observations. There‘s a truly epic Nouveau Riche Christmas party, too. I grinned my way through that whole segment.

This was a good sequel to The Christmas Bookshop. I‘d love to visit this shop in real life it it existed! Some of the conflicts between the MC and others in the book were a little contrived but I still thought it provided the kind of story I was looking for.

Team #RestingGrinchFace are you ready? #WinterGames starts tomorrow! Let‘s go!

1. I‘m off tomorrow and I plan to read, do some game planning, do some decorating, take some photos, maybe some baking.
2. Going to start with the tagged book, Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop.
@Airykah13 @Sarahreadstoomuch @katiekat311 @Bookworm54 @AmandaBlaze @tdrosebud @Coueriamb @Clwojick

AmandaBlaze 1. Reading, games, photo challenges. I might watch a movie.
2. The Christmas Appeal by Janice Hallett.
5mo
AmandaBlaze @Julsmarshall Can we start at midnight? 5mo
tdrosebud I'm on the waitlist at the library for your tagged book. I really enjoyed the first one and am hoping it will come in this December. 5mo

Gissy Lovely print 💚 5mo
Bookworm54 1) I don‘t think I will be able to do much reading tomorrow (work and a Christmas meal) but I might get a couple of photo challenges done. Maybe a Christmas film in the background. 2) I thought I might join the letters from Father Christmas readalong. So I will probably start that first :) 5mo
Sarahreadstoomuch 1. I have an all day Staff Development Day, which even though I‘m not in charge of it - it will still be pretty draining. Most likely watch a movie after if anything . 2. I need to finish what I‘m reading and then I‘ll start Holly Jolly Ever After! 5mo
Julsmarshall @AmandaBlaze You sure can! I won‘t post the kick off post until the morning but you can track points in the meantime 🎅 5mo
AmandaBlaze @JulsMarshall Are book points stackable? For example, TheChristmas Appeal is on my TBR and a Christmas book. Would it get both sets of points (15+25), or the highest single score (25)? 5mo
Julsmarshall @AmandaBlaze You only get one- the highest one so it would be 25 points. You can stack readathons points. 5mo
