The Shuddering
The Shuddering | Ania Ahlborn
They only come when it snows, and nobody ever gets away.A group of close friends gathers at a secluded cabin in the wintry mountains of Colorado for a final holiday hurrah. Instead, it may be their last stand. First a massive blizzard leaves them marooned. Then the more chilling realization: something is lurking in the woods, watching them, waitingNow a weekend of family, friends, and fun has turned into a test of love and loyalty in the face of inhuman horrors. The only hope for those huddled inside is to fight tooth and nail, bullet and blade for their lives. Otherwise, they'll end up like the monsters' other victims: bright pools of blood on glittering snow, screams lost in the vast mountains.

Christmas time always seems like a good time for horror reads. Maybe because it balances out all the cheer. These are a few of the books at the top of my horror tbr. Amazing spooky ornament by @guild_of_calamity on Instagram.

1. I immediately thought of snow and then the tagged book
2. Talked with someone at work for 2 hours about all things great: horror movies, horror books, and D&D. I‘m also proud that I carried on a conversation that long.
3. Movie and a book.

Do not read this book at night. Or if it's snowing. Or while eating. This was fast-paced, scary and VERY gory in spots - but not overly so, just enough to set the tone and leave you unsettled. Thanks to this book I will never ever spend time in a cabin in the winter 😂
A great read for this time of year! I already downloaded two more of her books for super cheap on kindle. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Another solid story by Ahlborn. I liked the characters & although a couple could be occasionally obnoxious I couldn't help but rooting for them. Sufficiently unnerving, it does for ski resorts what Jaws did for beaches.

Reggie I was really caught up in the drama of was he gonna pick his pregnant gf or stay with the love of his life. Lol 2mo

This was amazing. It reads like a horror movie should look. Beautifully written in a flow that keeps you on the edge of your seat and the characters written with dimension. My only complaint would be that the tension was written so well that I sailed through the pages craving the next sentence, the next paragraph and before I knew it I was at the end! As always, Ania Ahlborn had my heart pumping and me shaking my head saying "amazing ending".

I love, love, LOVE Ania Ahlborn's books. I've read all but this one and one other. A lot of people don't like her books because the endings aren't always full of the closure one expects, and that's what I love most about her books. I borrowed this book from the Inter-Library Loan, as my library has sadly gotten rid of a lot of the science fiction and any books older than 2015 that aren't checked out regularly.

Reggie I hope you like this one. I thought it was great. My favorite of hers is Brother. It‘s super dark but so good. 8mo
DGRachel I agree about the endings. Her ending to Seed is what has caused that book to haunt me still, nearly 7 years after I read it. 8mo
Alicepondpoe @Reggie Brother was the first book of hers I read, I loved it, it's what hooked me! @DGRachel I haven't read Seed yet, it's the other I haven't read by her aside from this one. My Library doesn't have it, I'll have to utilize their ILL again. My favorite ending was Brother second to The Devil Crept In. I love how her books are so different in style and take on the same horror tropes and twist them amazingly well. 8mo

This book was meh. I‘m a fan of Ahlborn but I could definitely tell this was one of her earlier books. The writing wasn‘t as good and I couldn‘t get invested in the characters. I also didn‘t like the random chapters where she would jump to the story of another person mostly unrelated to the main story. I understand what she was trying to do but it just didn‘t work for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Reading this brought my #24in48 total to 8 hrs 20 min.

TheReadingMermaid Dracul was amazing!!!!! 10mo
mjester @TheReadingMermaid Top five in no particular order, because it's hard enough to just choose 5 10mo
mjester Shirley Jackson, Poe, Hunter Thompson, Michael Crichton, Umberto Eco. 10mo

Enjoyed my first Ania Ahlborn. It read like a collaboration between Stephen King & Ruth Ware. Minus the snowy setting, it was reminiscent of one of my fav horror movies, The Descent. I found the book a unique experience since most creature fic/flicks are eager to dole out (often lame) scares without much focus on exploring the characters. AA takes the generic plot of monsters preying on an isolated group & really fleshes it out, peopling it 👇

rohit-sawant with layered characters, friction between whom sparks emotional upheaval, so when the nightmarish creatures do descend on them, the horror is complete. As audiences, I think we've sort of become a part of the "prequel generation," & I love that AA goes against the grain & doesn't delve into the creatures' origins, which puts you in the same boat as the characters. 2y
rohit-sawant I found TS inspiring as a writer and lover of the genre. Especially of late, a lot of work in the field is geared towards subtle takes on the supernatural, which I love & try to emulate, but I also have a special place in my heart for stories on the other end of the spectrum. Seeing AA's unfiltered approach is refreshing & showcases that, given the right treatment, there's still a place for old school monsters. 2y
Reggie Nice review. I just like that she made us feel for everyone. Had there not been monsters I still would have wanted to know how everyone would have turned out. At the beginning, when she had the older man get eaten alive while he was thinking of his wife in her wedding dress...... she had me. Lol 2y
See All 8 Comments
TrishB I‘ve got some of hers on my kindle - must get to soon....... 2y
rohit-sawant @Reggie Absolutely! And I was loving the opening sequence soon as I jumped in, but that brilliant note she ended it on really elevated it and set the tone for the story. 2y
rohit-sawant @TrishB Haha, hope you enjoy it! Really looking forward to more of her work. 2y
batsy Fascinating review! Also fascinating: fell into internet wormhole after looking up info on Vandermeer's trilogy, and somehow it led me to The Descent, which I have not watched. How cool that it's your favourite. Going to have to watch it soon... in bright daylight 😓 2y
rohit-sawant @batsy Thank you! You'll like The Descent (And yes to daylight! 😱) I first read about the film in Stephen King's Danse Macabre, which is a masterwork on the genre. He described what makes it work brilliantly. Let me look it up. I'll share it in the next post. 2y

The character I'm finding myself most empathetic towards is one detested (with good reason at times) by the other characters. And I'm at a point in the book where I fear something bad is going to happen to her. Part of me wants to press on but the other part wants to resume reading in the morning so, this is gonna sound weird, she'll "live for a day more."

TommieMarie74 You can put it in the freezer if you need to. 😳 2y
rohit-sawant @TommieMarie74 🤣❄📚❄ 2y
Reggie Lololol really, April? You‘re a nice guy man cause she‘s the one I didn‘t mind going out alone into the blizzard. 2y
rohit-sawant @Reggie I know it's an unpopular opinion but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I mean, she didn't ask to be dragged into the drama, but it was inevitable either way, and the way she reacted, while unflattering & devoid of grace, came from a place of hurt, & I think none of us are strangers to doing stupid things, to a larger or smaller degree, when hurting. Also, the fact that she first thought of Stephen King while thinking books warmed my heart. 🤣 2y

Oh my God! A friend lent me this book because she found it so captivating and I am so with her on this. This story is simultaneously simple (the plot is that of a typical horror movie) and super creepy. It plays with your expectations and has you glued to wherever you‘re sitting while reading. I finished this pretty much in one sitting. And the ending ... 😱 I will need to get my own copy at some point and reread it. #spooktober

Reggie I really liked her style of storytelling. She made you care for every one of those people. And then I was like, oh man, they all died?!! Except for the sister. Take away the horror and I still wanted to know if he was gonna choose the sister or the baby mama. Lol good stuff. I‘m reading another one by her, Brother, and it is twisting my insides pretty good. 2y
scripturient @Reggie Yes! I felt the same way. I liked all the characters - except for April maybe. :) And what really got me was the ending: I was like ‚oh, at least she made it‘ and then it‘s history repeating itself. 😱 2y
DeeLew I finished this one earlier in the week. It made me so anxious. Lol.. I grew up in a rural area where we were frequently snowed in, a few times without power and if I would have read this book back then I would have needed counseling. 😂😂💀That ending! 😱This is my third novel of hers. 🖤🖤 2y

New additions to Kindle!

BekahB Nice! I'm hoping to get to The Snowman sometime this month. 2y
rohit-sawant @BekahB Same! Hoping my TBR doesn't get ambushed, though. Haven't read Nesbø yet so quite excited. 2y
Cathythoughts I'm not a huge Jo Nesbo fan, but I heard a Litten saying the movie is coming of Snowman, so that's interesting. I do really love Henning Mankel though, he would be my favourite Scandinoir author, 👍 (edited) 2y

rohit-sawant @Cathythoughts Love Mankel. I read the first book in the Wallander series last year and enjoyed it. I haven't read many Swedish writers, but I'm a huge fan of John Ajvide Lindqvist. Need to read more of their work! And the movie was what prompted me to check out the Nesbø book! 2y
Cathythoughts Lindqvist ? Haven't heard of , but I will check him out for sure. I've read every book of Mankels, he's a great writer in my book. May he rest in peace. 2y
rohit-sawant @Cathythoughts I'll definitely get to the next Wallander book soon. Lindquist's Let the Right One In is an excellent place to start. 2y
Cathythoughts Thankyou. I will do that. 🙏 2y
rohit-sawant @Cathythoughts My pleasure! Hope you enjoy it. 2y
vivastory Snowman is on my September TBR as well. Did you ever see the movie based on his books Headhunters? I highly recommend 2y
rohit-sawant @vivastory I haven't but will add it to my To Watch list! Thanks for the rec! 2y
batsy I want to read The Snowman, too! But reading a series out of order makes me a bit wonky 😁 The movie looks good, though. Have you read the Swedish Martin Beck series? I've only read the first and liked it 2y
rohit-sawant @batsy I feel like I need a separate shelf for your recommendations! So intrigued by Roseanna. I think the titles on my tentative TBR linked arms to keep it from breaking in. Eager to check it out. Thank you! It's great actually that you read a series in order. I wish I had your resolve instead of giving in to my excitement. The Harry Bosch novels being a good example. Still haven't read the first one. 😧 2y
batsy @rohit-sawant Haha, happy to enable 😆 Honestly I've thought about keeping a logbook of just Litsy recommendations, lol. If you ever do try the Beck series, hope you enjoy it. And I wish I could be spontaneous and read out of sequence, it will certainly make life easier when the film industry does adaptations out of order 😌 2y
Cathythoughts @batsy I read the entire Martin Beck series Maj Sjowall & Per Wahloo. & it was excellent. I did binge read that series, it was too good to stop 😉I'll have to read the Snowman now too, it's great if the movie is coming 👍 (edited) 2y
batsy @Cathythoughts Glad you enjoyed the series, I'm extra motivated to continue past the first book 👍 #somanybookssolittletime 2y
