The Greatest Knight
The Greatest Knight: The Story of William Marshal | Elizabeth Chadwick
23 posts | 20 read | 34 to read
Historical fact and fiction are entwined in this engrossing story about the infamous William Marshal. He was the penniless young knight who was plucked from obscurity to become a royal favourite and went on to be described as 'the true Lancelot'. This is the fascinating fictionalised story of the jealousies, romance and conflict within the royal court that led to him becoming a forgotten hero.

In response to @ljuliel ‘s question about history books and periods I like, I much prefer historical fiction (one of my favourite genres) but do read the odd historical non fiction book. The Greatest Knight, and William Marshall story, is one of my favourites. Medieval fiction is my favourite but read most periods. Favourite authors Elizabeth Chadwick, Ken Follet, Sharon Kay Penman, C.J. Sansom, Bernard Cornwell.

ljuliel Great answer, Andrew ! 3mo
Eggbeater I'm a big fan of Ken Follet and Bernard Cornwell. 3mo

Andrew65 @ljuliel Great question. 👏👏👏 3mo
lost.in.a.book Thanks, will add to my TBR! 3mo
Crazeedi Have this on my shelf, have not read it yet! Love this period 3mo
Andrew65 @lost.in.a.book Elizabeth Chadwick is a great author and there is a short series about William Marshall. @Crazeedi 3mo
DrexEdit Sharon Kay Penman is on my list; specifically The Sunne in Splendour. I hope it's a stand alone? I dislike starting a book and finding out later it's the middle of a series! 😊 3mo
Andrew65 @DrexEdit I love that book! Yes it is a standalone. 3mo
DrexEdit @Andrew65 wonderful!I'm looking forward to it! 3mo

My willpower was low at the end of a long, tiring week... couldn't resist these ebook deals #bookhaul

So grateful for books and Littens who unknowingly enable my book buying 😂❤️ Thanks @TrishB for posting about the Chadwick (couldn't find the bundle since I'm not in the US but this book was 99 cents 🇨🇦 so I grabbed it) and @nitalibrarian for posting about the Raven Tower sale!

llwheeler Also my autocorrect really wanted to change the Raven to the Ravenels lol. I haven't even read much Kleypas! #romantsy 10mo
TrishB I hope you enjoy 😁 at 99c you can definitely be excused another book! 10mo
llwheeler @TrishB I've read a couple of hers before so I'm pretty sure I'm going to love it 😊 10mo

This was between a pick and a so-so, but I‘m feeling generous today. It was alright, and I loved William Marshal. But the pacing felt a little off, to me. Almost every chapter was set some years after the previous, and it was only towards the end of the book we actually starting getting more into the details. It felt like Chadwick was trying to do too much, and it all got a bit superficial 🤷‍♀️

I‘m going home to my family for Christmas tomorrow, and I #TryToRemember everything, but it is hard to focus when I‘m only 100 pages away from the end of the book!

#BabyitsColdOutside, and I have bought the last Christmas presents, and I might have drunk a tad too much wine and champagne yesterday celebrating a friend. So now I‘m curled up on the couch, with coffee in a drip, and trying to get my heavy head to focus on reading. But to be honest, I might end up just watching Netflix or napping 😴😴

Thndrstd Yay, naps! 💤 1y

This book certainly lives up to its reputation as one of those books that every historical fiction fan should read. It is a long, but excellent book that has a bit of everything in it, as well as detailing part of the Plantagenet family story - including Eleanor‘s imprisonment and the warring between Henry II and his sons. I look forward to reading the rest of William Marshall‘s story. A great start to the #MakeMeReadIt in August Challenge. #1

Andrew65 Now that I‘ve read this @Melissa_J I hope I‘ve redeemed my reputation! 😂 2y
Melissa_J Yay!!!! I‘m so proud of you 😊 And glad it lived up to the hype for you. 2y
Andrew65 @Melissa_J It most definitely did and beyond! Thanks 😁 Now onto 2y

Andrew65 @EadieB It is a good read. 2y
EadieB @Andrew65 Will definitely have to pull that one out of the China closet for sure! lol 2y
Andrew65 @EadieB You might want to read A Place Beyond Courage first, although it is not shown as being in the William Marshall series (and was written after The Greatest Knight) it tells the story of his parents and a very young William does come into it. It is also a five star read. (edited) 2y

Over the next few days I will post a tiebreaker post for the ties so I know the full order. I hope to read all these in August.
Thanks to everyone for their votes 🙌👏 & to the wonderful @TheReadingMermaid for the great idea & post in the first place as I always struggle to work out what to Read.

How exciting 😁 @Melissa_J @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen who would you cast as William?

LeahBergen What?? Yay! Hmm... I want them to cast someone who is big and manly and not too famous. A relative unknown would be best. 2y
TrishB @LeahBergen I was thinking Kit Harrington, but way too famous and busy...... 2y
Itchyfeetreader Tom Hughes might be a good fit. Bit swarthy, but famous but not too famous. 2y
See All 15 Comments
TrishB @Itchyfeetreader I had to go and look him up! Definitely potential 👍🏻 2y
Melissa_J Richard Armitage is my pick, but I would pretty much cast him in everything 🤷🏻‍♀️ @LeahBergen 2y
Melissa_J If the casting calls for someone younger I would go for Richard Madden. 2y
LeahBergen @TrishB I picture him taller than Kit Harrington. 😆 2y
LeahBergen @Itchyfeetreader Ooo, good one. 2y
LeahBergen @Melissa_J Armitage would be good. 😍 2y
TrishB @Melissa_J @LeahBergen agreed 👍🏻 Armitage is a good one and he likes his history stuff. 2y
Cathythoughts Ok !! Exciting!! This will be hard ... who will be perfect enough ??! I‘ll check out your guys... I feel a bit out of touch with actors .. what about the actor who plays Cormoran Strike, I havnt seen him in action but he looks nice 2y
Cathythoughts Yes Armitage looks good! Boarding plane ✈️ cHt when I get home ❤️👍🏻 2y
TrishB @Cathythoughts safe journey 💕 2y
Melissa_J @TrishB @LeahBergen at one point he was trying to bring The Sunne in Splendour to the screen. I wish that had happened 😕 2y

The story of a knight, William Marshall, during the reign of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Marshall apparently was an ancestor of George Washington. Part of a series--somewhat in chronological order--that includes the story of the Magna Carta. Quite a page turner.

Gezemice Looks interesting! I love medieval history, I should check this out! 4y
Lissa00 I love Elizabeth Chadwick's books. This reminds me that I still have more of them to read😄 4y

Chadwick is an English writer and I had to get her books via Canadian Amazon. A former romance novelist, she switched to historical fiction with a touch of romance. I enjoyed these stories so much that, well, I ordered them thru Canadian Amazon.
