The Glass Menagerie
The Glass Menagerie | Tennessee Williams
59 posts | 194 read | 39 to read
Menagerie was Williams's first popular success and launched the brilliant, if somewhat controversial, career of our pre-eminent lyric playwright. Since its premiere in Chicago in 1944, with the legendary Laurette Taylor in the role of Amanda, the play has been the bravura piece for great actresses from Jessica Tandy to Joanne Woodward, and is studied and performed in classrooms and theatres around the world. The Glass Menagerie (in the reading text the author preferred) is now available only in its New Directions Paperbook edition. A new introduction by prominent Williams scholar Robert Bray, editor of The Tennessee Williams Annual Review, reappraises the play more than half a century after it won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award: "More than fifty years after telling his story of a family whose lives form a triangle of quiet desperation, Williams's mellifluous voice still resonates deeply and universally." This edition of The Glass Menagerie also includes Williams's essay on the impact of sudden fame on a struggling writer, "The Catastrophe of Success," as well as a short section of Williams's own "Production Notes." The cover features the classic line drawing by Alvin Lustig, originally done for the 1949 New Directions edition.

This is a lovely, contemplative little play. It has some great imagery involved, and the characters are fully realized people full of hope, desperation, and flaws. It's my first Tennessee Williams. I wasn't completely blown away, but I am looking forward to A Streetcar Named Desire. (In case you want fair warning: Amanda, the mom, has a couple of racist remarks against a couple of different minority groups.) #RoryGilmoreChallenge

A memory play that was well written, well played and yet the plot wasn‘t as ... I dunno, maybe my expectation was higher due to all the rave reviews 😅 It‘s a good read nevertheless.

Here‘s my take on #bookspin #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks ! I can‘t decide which books to fill up the boxes with, I‘ve decided to place alphabets instead! I‘ll pick the books with the author‘s first name based on the alphabet where the numbers are in. January‘s numbers were 20 and 4 so it‘s T and D! I did drill it down further to type based on another challenge. So that‘s how I‘ve ended up with Tennessee Williams‘ The Glass Menagerie 🤞🏻

I'll call this a Pick because I found the autobiographical elements made the play even more compelling. I was a bit lost when it came to classifying this as a memory play, but overall it worked well even on paper. With the right cast, though, it could be electric on stage.

My absolute favorite role I‘ve ever played: Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie. An absolutely exquisite play by a truly brilliant author- the stage directions read just as beautifully as the actual dialogue. #Tennesseewilliams

TheBookStacker I love Williams but I‘m more partial to 6y
KatieanneF @TheBookStacker another great one! I‘d love to play Maggie one day 😍😍. His plays have such tactile emotions and such lovely words 6y

KatieCarpenter Laura is a dream role! 6y
KatieanneF @KatieCarpenter it was a dream to get to play her, truly. I felt very spoiled for the whole ride 6y
KatieCarpenter @KatieanneF that‘s so wonderful though. I‘m so glad you got to! One of my favorite characters written for the stage. :) how long have you been doing theatre for? Also similar names and you like the stage? Immediately friends! ;) (edited) 6y
CarolynM What a fabulous experience! It is a wonderful part in a wonderful play. But I have to say I agree with @TheBookStacker Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is my favourite and if I were an actor I'd kill to play Maggie! 6y
KatieanneF @KatieCarpenter yes!! ☺️☺️☺️ I‘ve been acting since I was in high school (I‘m 29 now). Do you perform too? 6y
KatieCarpenter @KatieanneF yes! Mostly in the community theatre here. I started heavily performing after I was finished with college. :) my most recent show was Blithe Spirit. I was Elvira :) 6y

TK-421 I love this play & really need to reread it. I remember Laura being the one I felt a connection to when I first read it in high school but later, it was Tom who really struck a chord with me. I wonder how I will feel about the characters now? 6y

Saw many beautiful #roses at the NY botanical gardens yesterday for Memorial Day like the one pictured, though I'm not sure if any were 'blue roses', as the Laura's 'gentleman caller' mistakenly hears her refer to her pleurosis, in a touching scene of the tagged play. #getmovin @eanderson @Cinfhen

Thoroughly enjoyable but even more so once you get the perspective of reading his essay “The catastrophe of Success” at the end which gives it a very raw enigmatic draw like no other especially since The Menagerie itself is semi autobiographical
