Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof | Tennessee Williams
29 posts | 55 read | 18 to read
The definitive text of this American classicreissued with an introduction by Edward Albee (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and A Delicate Balance) and Williams' essay "Person-to-Person." Cat on a Hot Tin Roof first heated up Broadway in 1955 with its gothic American story of brothers vying for their dying father's inheritance amid a whirlwind of sexuality, untethered in the person of Maggie the Cat. The play also daringly showcased the burden of sexuality repressed in the agony of her husband, Brick Pollitt. In spite of the public controversy Cat stirred up, it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Critics Circle Award for that year. Williams, as he so often did with his plays, rewrote Cat on a Hot Tin Roof for many yearsthe present version was originally produced at the American Shakespeare Festival in 1974 with all the changes that made Williams finally declare the text to be definitive, and was most recently produced on Broadway in the 2003-04 season. This definitive edition also includes Williams' essay "Person-to-Person," Williams' notes on the various endings, and a short chronology of the author's life. One of America's greatest living playwrights, as well as a friend and colleague of Williams, Edward Albee has written a concise introduction to the play from a playwright's perspective, examining the candor, sensuality, power, and impact of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof then and now.

#TemptingTitles #WithCat I‘ve accepted that I can get by with having read only excerpts from this (and The Glass Menagerie and Uncle Vanya) but that I‘m missing a whole level of subtlety to the cultural references in almost half the books I open, so I should really get to these works… @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

CarolynM You really do need to read (or see) Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in its entirety to appreciate it. It‘s an old favourite of mine🙂 The Elizabeth Taylor/Paul Newman movie doesn‘t count, they left some important stuff out. 12mo

1. Yes! I LOVE reading plays 😍. I try to read a handful every year
2. Ideally, I would read it and then watch the performance, but I‘m a happy camper either way 🎭. I definitely miss going to the theater
3. I have the tagged currently checked out from the library and will be digging in soon 🤓

#sundayfunday

BookmarkTavern We all deserve to see a play. Hopefully by next year! 🤞🏻 Thank you for posting! 3y

Found these top four books at a little free library in Brunswick right where I was working on Sunday 😃

I must do the rounds and drop my read books off to these lovely little shared libraries.

#APlay you say? I've got a few of those 😁 As a former theatre major, I've got multiple shelves full of plays! Here's a peek at one.

My fave from this shelf is the tagged play. I 💓 TW.

But the best play I've seen would be Ruined by Lynn Nottage. Absolutely brilliant. What's yours?

These days my morning leave me with a very unsatisfactory amount of reading time. Today, I managed to squeeze in some Williams. This might be my favorite play of his and the Reclam Verlag edition fits snugly in my pocket.

Leftcoastzen @jveezer that expo must be terrific. I remember I was at a convention there in May , on foot walking to my hotel 108 and wind , just awful. 6y

I don't own many nor do I read a whole lot of plays. I enjoyed the ones pictured but my all time favorite is The Crucible and Pygmalion.

HeatherBookNerd I love plays ❤️ 6y
BiblioTori I love Tennessee Williams! Streetcar is my favorite Williams play, but this one is pretty good too! 6y
mrp27 @HeatherBookNerd I don't mind reading plays but I'd rather see them. 6y

Because letter B is kicking my butt - going to read this for letter C and then go back. #litsyclassicschallenge @Sarah83

Vbrrgirl Well Letter C #Litsyclassicschallenge was wonderful. May be the first play I‘ve actually read, but I really enjoyed visualizing the stage direction throughout outstanding dialogue. Recommend! 6y

Through Maggie and Brick, Williams shows just how complicated marriage can be. Of course I loved the movie as well.

#MarchIntoReading #BookBags I have a large selection of cloth tote bags. I use them when grocery shopping. But, not this one. This one usually stays in the house and is currently holding some books. I obtained this one at a book festival in Alabama, at the Mississippi booth, of course.

I'm going to use tomorrow to get a leg up on my 2017 reading, so I figured I'd post my December stats today. As you can see, my numbers don't quite add up, but that's because some of the books fit multiple categories. I counted Holidays on Ice as nonfiction, even though it obviously had fiction in it. I wasn't sure how else to categorize it. 😬

I bought this 1955 paperback of the play at a used book store three years ago. I took it down from my bookshelf for the first time last night, to fulfill the read a play part of the Read Harder Challenge. It was engaging and I finished it in one sitting. I think I should add more plays to my TBR.

Joybishoptx I love reading plays. Especially Tennessee Williams plays! 7y

No playwright has ever created female characters as amazing as those Tennessee Williams wrote. Maggie the Cat: tough, sexy, clever, charming - multifaceted, brilliant.
