I never knew I needed such a book about Bigfoot, but I‘m so glad it exists and that I read it.

I loved the way this was mostly told through journal entries, but also incorporated interviews, documentaries, and other excerpts from radio shows and scientific articles. It gave the story an amazing fullness, let the reader anticipate what was going to happen, and backed up the natural progression of action by making everything seem possible 👣🌋🏡

AFrostCauseReads @TheAromaofBooks this was my #doublespin pick for September. It was also my #bookspin pick for august. I guess the universe really wanted me to read this one, lol 3mo

Holy Hell! I really didn't know what to expect going into this book. I'm not typically a big fan of cryptozoology books. The format really worked for this subject-the story is revealed through journal entries, interviews, & news articles. The suspense builds at a steady pace & the ending explodes with action. The author builds on that little anxiety that exists in all of us, even if we don't believe, about what lives in the woods.👣
⭐⭐⭐⭐

BookwormM This gave me nightmares so realistic 7mo

FelinesAndFelonies @BookwormM I found this one really creepy and unsettling. It was similar to the way I felt when I read The Hollow Places. @ShelleyBooksie I agree that the characters weren't gripping but the story overrode that for me. The atmosphere and plot line had me far more invested than the characters. @NikkiM5 I really liked it. One of the better thrillers I have read. Can you recommend any similar books? 7mo
NikkiM5 @FelinesAndFelonies If you haven‘t read Brook‘s World War Z it is the best, it‘s nothing like the movie. 7mo

This book got me thinking. This is the first book Ive ever read about Bigfoot. How far of a stretch would it be for it to be non-fiction? The way that this book is written makes it very convincing. The idea of it freaks me out a bit. If nothing else, it was a good and quick read.

Pick! Pick! Pick! If you like World War Z style character account books, I believe you will enjoy Devolution. Bigfoot is not a monster/urban legend creature I usually care for, but because it was Brooks I gave it a shot. I may be a Bigfoot fan now. Character development was great, the storyline was very intense and I was scared walking my dog near the woods while listening to the book. 😂 #bookspin #doublespin

Reagan It was so fun! 8mo
NikkiM5 @Reagan agreed, I didn‘t want it to end 8mo
Reggie Lol, yeah I don‘t think I could have been near the woods reading this one either. I loved this book. I started out really not liking the main character but really came to root and care for her. 8mo
Reggie Ps her and the little girl are still alive hunting down the other Bigfoot right? 8mo
NikkiM5 @Reggie I felt that too and hope that‘s the case. I loved her and Dans character growth. She is straight ruthless now 💪🏽 8mo

I got a kick out of listening to the audiobook for this Sasquatch horror novel by Max Brooks. It has a full cast, led by Judy Greer, with Nathan Fillion, Terry Gross, Kate Mulgrew, and more. Part diary, part interview, part scientific treatise, Devolution was an entertaining, darkly funny, and...violently gross ride. 😜🦶

ChaoticMissAdventures Wasn't it so well done?? I decided to listen to it last summer while solo hiking in Washington. Definitely had me glancing over my shoulder 😆 9mo

I enjoyed this slow burning thriller! Told through diary entries and interviews, this had a true-crime documentary feel and Max Brooks left you to draw your own interpretations a lot of the time. An unreliable narrator and an unresolved mystery just add to the realistic feel. I did have a niggle with the characters though - some were richly drawn but a lot of them lacked depth, possibly due to the diary format. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

Hands down one of the best thrillers I‘ve ever read. It was simultaneously scary, gruesome, and entertaining. I‘ve always been enthralled with the concept of Bigfoot, so I couldn‘t wait to read this. Once I started, I could not stop. I even had nightmares a few times when I read it before bed. What a great and interesting read! I‘d highly recommend!!

ElleSkel I have this one from the library now, going to start it this week I hope! 10mo
WonderlandMind Let me know what you think! 10mo
ShelleyBooksie It was my most disliked book of 2020! That being said, many people love it and I was rooting for characters at the end. 10mo
See All 7 Comments
WonderlandMind @ShelleyBooksie different opinions makes for great discussion! I like the Bigfoot lore so that was my main reason for loving it 10mo
ShelleyBooksie @WonderlandMind - I thought that part of the book was cool. I found all of the detail about the eco places at the beginning was too much. I really enjoyed the Bigfoot family but I am a wimp and the gore factor was high! I also listened to this on audio and did not love the narrator - reading it may have changed my.opinion :) The scene where a person is so smoothed their intestines come.out.of their nose is.still with me months later - lol. 10mo
ShelleyBooksie Smashed not smoothed 10mo
ElleSkel @WonderlandMind I finished this one the other day and I wanted so much to love it but didn‘t. I liked it, and unlike @ShelleyBooksie I really enjoyed all the science stuff ( and the horror, I love horror) but what I didn‘t love were the characters. Maybe it was that the audiobook wasn‘t a good fit for me. I just couldn‘t get attached to the characters enough to really get sucked into the story. I loved the concept and they way it was done though! 10mo

A planned community in the wilds is confronted with an unexpected threat after Mt Rainier erupts, cutting them off from the rest of society. The primary narrator, Kate, is anxious and non-confrontational, but as their situation becomes increasingly dire, she is taken under the wing of an experienced survivor, and develops newfound strength. This was an interesting premise, and mostly good, but ultimately a horror novel. Do not read while camping.

4⭐️

In an effort to save her marriage, Kate has moved to Greenloop. Created as a new eco-community with the latest technology for every, and it seems like a dream and a fresh start. This was all true until Mt Reiner erupted. Everything changed and a few weeks later, USGS officials and others come across a battlefield which was once Greenloop. This is the story of what happened to Kate, Greenloop, and an unforeseen encounter with Sasquatch.

This was almost a so-so for me, but I think since I just read World War Z that my expectations may have been too high.

Overall, Brooks writes a fun tale involving murders, a family of sasquatch, and the humans who refuse to fall victim to them.

It's definitely not as well done as WWZ, but still a good read.

TheNeverendingTBR I think WWZ was overrated so I'll probably not bother with this one then 😏 13mo

I didn‘t know I needed a book about a Sasquatch attack in my life, but I did! This was fun, gruesome and even a little sad. I agree with the comments about the writer of the found journal, Kate, being a little annoying but that changes as things progress. I may have to revisit on audio, because I saw someone mention Nathan Fillion. #Screamathon #BookspinBingo

Oh this was a fun audiobook, perfect for the scary season! I seriously devoured this in a day and a half; it's so good! I LOVE that it's told in a journal/news report style; so believable (most) that I had to search online to see if the town was real! It can get a touch gruesome; beware of that! Make sure to listen to/read the epilogue! Well told, Mr Brooks!

This is 💯 a blame-it-on-Litsy choice. The audio was excellent, with a GREAT cast, including Terry Gross, who voices herself! When I was dating my husband, someone would be playing saxophone at the park nearby at all hours of the night. We called him Saxsquatch. So perhaps that piqued my interest in this story. I probably could have listened to this in once sitting, and while I‘m not counting on it, a sequel would be well-deserved.

Reggie I believed, and so did my dad after he read it, that the woman and girl are still out there, hunting them down. A sequel would be nice. 13mo

I loved Brook‘s World War Z, and I was excited by this book tackling the legend of Bigfoot. Devolution is also told through interviews, but most of the story is told through a “found diary.” Sadly, the author of this diary, Kate, is incredibly annoying and vapid. I almost DNF‘d it, but I am glad I kept reading. Kate goes through a necessary character evolution, and ends up being rather interesting.

The first 40-50 pp are a little slow and the shifting narrator is a little disorienting to begin with but the characters are steadily fully drawn and Brooks ratchets the tension both believably and excruciatingly. Excellent study in social dynamics, eco-folly and our ability nèe need to explain-mansplain rising danger and impending doom in order to not lose face. Okay Max Brooks is terrible at writing women. This is overly dramatic and silly - while also being quite gory. But to be honest when not listening I was excited to get back to it and was a bit sad when it was over. It helps that the audio has a fantastic cast with people like Julie Greer and Nathan Fillion, and I listened to it while hiking alone through the Washington Olympic forest 😂

Told through journal entries and interviews, this is the story of a small community in the mountains that is attacked by a tribe of Sasquatch. I have to say, reading this really got me interested in the Big Foot lore. I want to read more about this.

The pacing of the story is good. The last half is a whirlwind of gruesome attacks. It is interesting to see who rises to the challenge and who falls apart. This is an exciting read.

Reggie There are mentions of PhD people in her who wrote actual theories and if you google them, they‘re real. I had no idea people actually wrote cryptozoology theories on how Bigfoot might have migrated from Asia way back in the day. I loved this book. 1y

I really enjoyed this horror story and the audio cast was great! The setting was fascinating, a small, isolated community, but totally dependent on technology and lacking the homesteader mentality you'd expect to find in such a place. A few pretty gory scenes, but it does have the word "massacre"in the subtitle; and good character growth (or decline in some cases).
