Persuasin / Persuasion | Jane Austen
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION First published in 1818, Persuasion was Jane Austen's last work. Its mellow character and autumnal tone have long made it a favorite with Austen readers. Set in Somersetshire and Bath, the novel revolves around the lives and love affair of Sir Walter Elliot, his daughters Elizabeth, Anne, and Mary, and various in-laws, friends, suitors, and other characters, In Anne Elliot, the author created perhaps her sweetest, most appealing heroine. At the center of the novel is Anne's thwarted romance with Captain Frederick Wentworth, a navy man Anne met and fell in love with when she was 19. At the time, Wentworth was deemed an unsuitable match and Anne was forced to break off the relationship. Eight years later, however, they meet again. By this time Captain Wentworth has made his fortune in the navy and is an attractive "catch." However, Anne is now uncertain about his feelings for her. But after various twists and turns of fortune, the novel ends on a happy note. In Persuasion, as in such novels as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma, Austen limned the plight of young women who could escape the constraints of family life only by marrying, and suggest the foolishness of women who believed they were free and not dependent on the financial and social resources of men. At the same time, Persuasion offers an ironic and subtle paean to the true love that enables one woman to rise above straitened economic circumstances and the stifling social conventions that restricted women to narrowly circumscribed lives in the common sitting room. Sure to appeal to admirers of Jane Austen, Persuasion will delight any reader with its finely drawn characters, gentle satire, and charming re-creation of the genteel world of the 19th-century English countryside.

@AvidReader25 - Two things:
1) I ❤️ the word thither!!
2) Is the letter from Mrs. Croft in the book I sent?!🤩

And, the second paragraph is beyond confusing. Two cousins (who?!), Miss Elliot (Elizabeth or Anne?), then “she, Anne & Clay” so the SHE must be Elizabeth here?!?!?!?

BkClubCare ⬆️ Third paragraph sorts it out…. 2d
BkClubCare But the 4th! Why HOW is Anne sitting at the window when it was decided she would walk?!! I am utterly confused 😵‍💫 2d
BkClubCare Okay, they are inside somewhere WAITING for a carriage? (edited) 2d

Ruthiella Miss Eliot is always Elizabeth I think. The eldest unmarried daughter gets the last name only. Any younger unmarried daughter is first and last name: Miss Anne Eliot. 2d

“The sweet scenes of autumn were for a while, put by, unless some tender sonnet, fraught with the apt analogy of the declining year, with declining happiness, & the images of youth, & hope, & spring, all gone together, blessed her memory.”

“Nor could she help fearing, on more serious reflection, that, like many other great moralists & preachers, she had been eloquent on a point in which her own conduct would ill bear examination.” #Persuasion2025

AvidReader25 @BkClubCare Two lines I loved. I like that Anne recognizes, even when she‘s critiquing someone else, that she can also be guilty of the same thing. 5d

Check in day for #Persuasian2025 @AvidReader25

… a few questions:
Did the nephew/Elliot automatically inherit his wife‘s riches upon her death?
I am confused who Colonel Wallis is??
Why the sandy-hair comments?!
Is Mrs Clay a widow? I forget why she is groupie to Elizabeth. And does dad like her or not? Seems he does but a convoluted sentence somewhere says he doesn‘t or does Anne wish he didn‘t?
Am I correct in thinking Sir Walter is … a cad?

BkClubCare I think I‘ve read chapter 15 three times already, and listened to it twice! 6d

AvidReader25 But I had forgotten how much I love Anne‘s inner monologue throughout the book. We get to glimpse what she‘s thinking and when she‘s struggling and I think that‘s why it‘s so hard to adapt this one into a good movie. 5d
BkClubCare @AvidReader25 - ah! I haven‘t attempted any films/mini series yet; interesting observation. (edited) 4d

I am starting this today, reading a chapter a day. Would a family tree be easy to find in the webs? I don‘t quite get who the heir is - a cousin? And what did this mean “wearing black ribbons for his wife”?

#Persuasion2025 @AvidReader25

Graywacke Enjoy. The black ribbons are just a way of saying he‘s a widower. 3w
Ruthiella @Andrea313 is Litsy‘s Jane Austen expert and close reader extraordinaire. But I believe the estate and title are entailed on the male issue and since Mr. Eliot has no son, a male cousin is the heir. (edited) 3w

ChaoticMissAdventures This is my favorite Austen! I think the family tree from this blogger is pretty good - https://bookedfortheday.wordpress.com/2012/05/24/persuasion-character-chart/ 3w
rwmg Black ribbons are a sign of mourning, so his wife is dead. I'm not sure what the stages of mourning are but probably she died about a year ago 3w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I loved this book. 3w
BkClubCare @rwmg - Jane Austen drops these lil nuggets and you have to know what they mean or you risk missing something! 😂 Thank you. 3w

BkClubCare Yes @AvidReader25 and @Ruthiella - thank you 🙏 ☺️ 3w
Andrea313 @Ruthiella What, this is the loveliest shout-out! Elizabeth wearing black ribbons here shows that while she's observing the loss, she's not going full-out in mourning clothes. The annotated Persuasion also mentions that limiting her mourning garb to ribbons only might be a sign of estrangement between Sir Walter's family and his heir. 3w
Andrea313 And yes, @Ruthiella is right that Mr. Elliot is Sir Walter's heir and Kellynch Hall is entailed to him, the closest male relative, and not to his daughters. Stupid Regency inheritance law! 3w
BkClubCare @Andrea313 - thank you! I was wanting more info on how this dude with the dead wife (and curious what she died of) was related. I will try to follow the story as it unfolds 🤪 3w
Andrea313 @BkClubCare I hope you enjoy it! Persuasion is probably my favorite Austen novel. 🩵 3w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Her insight into relationships is amazing given the nature of her life. Virginia Woolf talks about her not even having a “Room of One‘s Own” to write in. 3w
BkClubCare @DrSabrinaMoldenReads - oh, goodness, I have yet to read A Room of One‘s Own and I adore Virginia Woolf. TY for sharing. 3w

8 years after turning down an engagement from the love of her life, Anne Elliot must come to terms w/ that decision when she meets Captain Wentworth again as he is courting another.

Maybe my new favorite Austen! Also, I love Austen dearly, but Anne is so Eldest Daughter coded I will not be taking criticism. This second chance romance was so lovely, & I resonated so strongly w/ Anne, & I loved her friendship w/ Lady Russell & Mrs Smith.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

Still one of my favorite of Austens, up there with P&P. But I admit I didn't care for this audio version quite as much. It is abridged with a full cast. I think so much of the novel is about feelings and happens internally, that some of the potency was lost here. I still enjoyed the story. The letter gets me every time 💌❤️

‘you pierce my soul. i am half agony, half hope. i have loved none but you.‘ Once again Jane Austen's biting commentary on social situations and arrangements, on people and relationships is top-notch. Austen is excellent with female characters and also excels at writing gentlemen that, even now two centuries later, have many a girl swooning, Amazing book and a must read, highly recommended.

Although I understand what Jane Austen tried to accomplish, I just found all the characters to be very bland and some downright unlikable. The book meanders for most of itself and then things really pick up in the last 5 chapters. It is one of those books that the conflict could have been resolved in 5 minutes but the characters refuse to communicate with each other like adults.

A pretty disappointing read.

📚Currently reading:

🎧Persuasion - 4 chapters a day.
📕The Goblin Emperor - A chapter a day.
📙Lord of The Necropolis - Reading before bed.
🎧Night of the Hunter - From time to time.

Progress:

Finished my first book of the year! I planned to read Persuasion between ACoK and ASoS but so far it's a huge slog but I will finish it. Looking forward to starting ASoS because I know I will like it.

Doppoetry I hear Persuasion gets better upon a re-read because the reader is familiar with the characters and their struggles at that point. I don't know much about the time period but I know enough to understand that the male love interest cares only about his feelings and doesn't really see the big picture.

I am about halfway done with Persuasion so unless he improves greatly in the latter half it's gonna be a struggle.

Book 3 of 2024.

As expected, this just wasn‘t for me. Even when I retrained my thoughts to think of this as more of a social commentary of the day a la Shakespeare, it just felt like a slog to get through and my attention kept straying. I‘m sure it‘s the narrative rather than the writing itself, because there was very little plot or conflict to be seen here. #AuthorAMonth

As Persuasion is the only book of Jane's, I haven't read, I chose it rather than revist old favourites (S&S).
This Audible collection is so good, I may yet listen to them all. Persuasion was narrated by Florence Pugh. As per usual, Austen's characters are exemplary, her plot masterful and social commentary as witty and scathing as always. Sad it was her last completed novel.
