Persuasione | Jane Austen
Pickpick

‘you pierce my soul. i am half agony, half hope. i have loved none but you.‘ Once again Jane Austen's biting commentary on social situations and arrangements, on people and relationships is top-notch. Austen is excellent with female characters and also excels at writing gentlemen that, even now two centuries later, have many a girl swooning, Amazing book and a must read, highly recommended.

Combat of Shadows | Manohar Malgonkar
post image
Pickpick

One of Malgonkar‘s most complex and layered novels, Combat of Shadows is a finely etched portrait of a society in flux. It narrates the story of an Englishman who lived in India and the entire book is structured around the beautiful Assam mountains before the Independence. In a genre of Interracial romance and intercultural relations this book sits on the top like a cherry on a cake.

Valley of the Dolls | Jacqueline Susann

Pickpick

“Yes, there‘s one thing I do want. I want to be aware of the minutes and the seconds, and to make each one count.”
The story could easily have fallen into melodrama but the author makes it so you cant sympathise with the characters. you can only observe and feel sorry for them - they are all naïve and deeply flawed. The characters are totally believable and recognizable.

The Lowland | Jhumpa Lahiri

Pickpick

The Lowland is a masterly novel of fate and will, exile and return. Tragic events connect two brothers. a smart woman who struggles with her history. a nation split by revolution. a relationship that endures after death. Suspenseful, sweeping, piercingly intimate
