I love this book so much! Rereading it reminded me of how Anne and Captain Wentworth‘s maturity leads to a deeper connection when they are reunited. They better understand life and their own foibles. They appreciate true connection when they find it and learn to trust their own decisions and worth. I loved reading it with @BkClubCare and this gorgeous edition from her full of letters and maps made it even more special. #persuasion2025

Ruthiella I feel like I only appreciated this one when I was older. When I first read it, I was impatient with Anne‘s passivity and her giving in to her family years before. But when I read it the second time, I better understood both her and Captain Wentworth‘s trajectory from young and impulsive to older and wiser. 4w
BkClubCare I loved reading this and our buddy reads are SO special! Thank you ☺️ 4w
AvidReader25 @Ruthiella beautifully said! Every time I reread this one I appreciate it more. There‘s something powerful in a mature love that reunites two people who have figured out a bit more of life. 3w

AvidReader25 @BkClubCare it was just what I needed! Thanks for doing it with me and making it such a memorable read. 3w
BkClubCare @AvidReader25 - I think it would be fun to explore: any books that have Anne & Capt later in life? Or different time periods… I will someday watch a film adaptation, I suppose 😆 3w
BkClubCare @AvidReader25 - or? What happens to Mr Elliot the scalawag and Mrs. Clay?!??? 😳 3w
AvidReader25 @BkClubCare I think they run off together! There are two movie versions I liked and I‘ve read at least two retellings, one in space, one in Tobago! I‘ll send more info on both. 3w
BkClubCare @AvidReader25 - yeah, I have that list somewhere! Or did I only write it to you?! LOL 3w
AvidReader25 @BkClubCare I‘m sending you details! 3w

LOVED it! Thank you @AvidReader25 for #BuddyRead -ing this with me. #Persuasion2025

The narration by Greta Scacchi is excellent, must be said.

#Aug2025 Book76

AvidReader25 What did you think of Wentworth‘s letter?!?! 1mo
BkClubCare @AvidReader25 - such passion! And courage - I loved Anne‘s reaction and how everyone thought she was ill and she couldn‘t get away to process. Plus, the assertion for both Captains to be sure to come to the “party” and they all thought she meant only to be polite to Harville. 😊 4w
AvidReader25 @BkClubCare Yes! And I love that we had a chance to actually see their conversation afterwards. I feel like that‘s so rarely happens in Austen. I love that they shared what they were feeling and how they were processing things and we saw the depth of their maturity, taking ownership of mistakes and assumptions they had made. 4w

@AvidReader25 - Two things:
1) I ❤️ the word thither!!
2) Is the letter from Mrs. Croft in the book I sent?!🤩

And, the second paragraph is beyond confusing. Two cousins (who?!), Miss Elliot (Elizabeth or Anne?), then “she, Anne & Clay” so the SHE must be Elizabeth here?!?!?!?

BkClubCare ⬆️ Third paragraph sorts it out…. 1mo
BkClubCare But the 4th! Why HOW is Anne sitting at the window when it was decided she would walk?!! I am utterly confused 😵‍💫 1mo
BkClubCare Okay, they are inside somewhere WAITING for a carriage? (edited) 1mo

BkClubCare Haha Town gossip says Anne is too delicate?! Silly 1mo
Ruthiella Miss Eliot is always Elizabeth I think. The eldest unmarried daughter gets the last name only. Any younger unmarried daughter is first and last name: Miss Anne Eliot. 1mo
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - ok. Got it. TY 😊 1mo
AvidReader25 I haven‘t found a letter from Mrs. Croft yet. I‘m reading them as I get to each point in the story. There are maps, letters, invitations, and a concert program. I‘ll send a pic! And just you wait, this book is famous for a specific letter, which is why I was so excited when you sent this edition! 😍 1mo
Skelly_fyer I just finished your story and it was so good! Let me know if you'd like to hear some ideas I had from an artist perspective 1mo
BkClubCare @Skelly_fyer - you just finished Persuasion? Make a post and tag #Persuasion2025! Would be cool to see your inspires art. 🖼️ 1mo
BkClubCare @AvidReader25 - must be in the last 2 chapters! Had to hold myself back from reading on. Glad that I have all day Sunday with no plans and I can hopefully do a review 🤗 1mo
Skelly_fyer @BkClubCare Thanks Will Do, Do you have any socials btw where I can show you my work? 1mo
BkClubCare @Skelly_fyer - here! Litsy is my favorite 1mo

“The sweet scenes of autumn were for a while, put by, unless some tender sonnet, fraught with the apt analogy of the declining year, with declining happiness, & the images of youth, & hope, & spring, all gone together, blessed her memory.”

“Nor could she help fearing, on more serious reflection, that, like many other great moralists & preachers, she had been eloquent on a point in which her own conduct would ill bear examination.” #Persuasion2025

AvidReader25 @BkClubCare Two lines I loved. I like that Anne recognizes, even when she‘s critiquing someone else, that she can also be guilty of the same thing. 1mo
BkClubCare Yes! So many fun phrasings, too. I just read Ch 17 (today being the 17th of August) and it is lining up nicely with my audiobook. My print copy would have it as Ch V of volume 2. 1mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Love this book! 1mo

Austen is phenomenal. Such wit, such human understanding. I am enjoying this book a lot. #Persuasion2025

➡️ Husband was not on same page as wife: “You talk nonsense!”

This chapter took me on a few minutes discovery of differences between rectors and vicars and curates OH MY ⛪️ 🕊️💰

AvidReader25 Mary does talk a lot of nonsense! 1mo

The way I audibly squealed when I opened this package!!! Hand-folded letters in one of my favorite books in the world! Particularly a book where a letter plays a crucial and beautiful role. @BkClubCare you made my whole month with this. You‘re just the best! #Persuasion2025 #Pemberlittens

BkClubCare Yay!! You got it!!! 💖 💌 2mo

I am starting this today, reading a chapter a day. Would a family tree be easy to find in the webs? I don‘t quite get who the heir is - a cousin? And what did this mean “wearing black ribbons for his wife”?

#Persuasion2025 @AvidReader25

Graywacke Enjoy. The black ribbons are just a way of saying he‘s a widower. 2mo
Ruthiella @Andrea313 is Litsy‘s Jane Austen expert and close reader extraordinaire. But I believe the estate and title are entailed on the male issue and since Mr. Eliot has no son, a male cousin is the heir. (edited) 2mo
AvidReader25 @Ruthiella Than you! So helpful. 2mo

ChaoticMissAdventures This is my favorite Austen! I think the family tree from this blogger is pretty good - https://bookedfortheday.wordpress.com/2012/05/24/persuasion-character-chart/ 2mo
rwmg Black ribbons are a sign of mourning, so his wife is dead. I'm not sure what the stages of mourning are but probably she died about a year ago 2mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I loved this book. 2mo
BkClubCare @rwmg - Jane Austen drops these lil nuggets and you have to know what they mean or you risk missing something! 😂 Thank you. 2mo
BkClubCare @ChaoticMissAdventures - Lovely! Thank you 2mo
BkClubCare @Graywacke - but she is sneaky in how she tells things! I am sure I will love it. 2mo
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - I figured as much but JA never says anything straight forward. 2mo
BkClubCare Yes @AvidReader25 and @Ruthiella - thank you 🙏 ☺️ 2mo
Andrea313 @Ruthiella What, this is the loveliest shout-out! Elizabeth wearing black ribbons here shows that while she's observing the loss, she's not going full-out in mourning clothes. The annotated Persuasion also mentions that limiting her mourning garb to ribbons only might be a sign of estrangement between Sir Walter's family and his heir. 2mo
Andrea313 And yes, @Ruthiella is right that Mr. Elliot is Sir Walter's heir and Kellynch Hall is entailed to him, the closest male relative, and not to his daughters. Stupid Regency inheritance law! 2mo
BkClubCare @Andrea313 - thank you! I was wanting more info on how this dude with the dead wife (and curious what she died of) was related. I will try to follow the story as it unfolds 🤪 2mo
Andrea313 @BkClubCare I hope you enjoy it! Persuasion is probably my favorite Austen novel. 🩵 2mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Her insight into relationships is amazing given the nature of her life. Virginia Woolf talks about her not even having a “Room of One‘s Own” to write in. 2mo
BkClubCare @DrSabrinaMoldenReads - oh, goodness, I have yet to read A Room of One‘s Own and I adore Virginia Woolf. TY for sharing. 2mo
BkClubCare @Andrea313 🥰😎🤓🤩 2mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I love Virginia!!! 2mo
AvidReader25 @DrSabrinaMoldenReads Yes! Just a small wooden writing box. Woolf knew how important an actual room would have been! 2mo
AvidReader25 @Andrea313 Mine too! I‘ve read them all so many times, but there‘s something about the depth and character growth in this one that always gets me. 2mo

BkClubCare Tag! 🏷️ You‘re it. I will be sending you a pkg 📦 this week… 💖 2mo
BkClubCare Aug 1: I have completed the first chapter. Is the heir dude a cousin? I think I need a family tree 🧐 2mo
AvidReader25 @BkClubCare stupid Regency heir laws. 2mo
janeycanuck This is why when I fall out of my Litsy habit, I scroll ALL the way back until I fell off the wagon. I‘d miss stuff like this otherwise!! I might try to jump in, it‘s been years since I read Persuasion. 1mo
AvidReader25 @janeycanuck oh yay! Very casual read and we‘d love you to join! It‘s been years for me too. 1mo
