Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone | J.K. Rowling
In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry, an orphan, lives with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley. One day just before his eleventh birthday, an owl tries to deliver a mysterious letterthe first of a sequence of events that end in Harry meeting a giant man named Hagrid. Hagrid explains Harry's history to him: When he was a baby, the Dark wizard, Lord Voldemort, attacked and killed his parents in an attempt to kill Harry; but the only mark on Harry was a mysterious lightning-bolt scar on his forehead. Now he has been invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where the headmaster is the great wizard Albus Dumbledore. Harry visits Diagon Alley to get his school supplies, especially his very own wand. To get to school, he takes the Hogwarts Express from platform nine and three-quarters at King's Cross Station. On the train, he meets two fellow students who will become his closest friends: Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Harry is assigned to Gryffindor House at Hogwarts, and soon becomes the youngest-ever Seeker on the House Quidditch team. He also studies Potions with Professor Severus Snape, who displays a deep and abiding dislike for Harry, and Defense Against the Dark Arts with nervous Professor Quirrell; he and his friends defeat a mountain troll, help Hagrid raise a dragon, and explore the wonderful, fascinating world of Hogwarts. But all events lead irrevocably toward a second encounter with Lord Voldemort, who seeks an object of legend known as the Sorcerer's Stone

Its occurred to me that McGonagall might not be old. I've always pictured her as such, especially after Dame Smith perfectly fit the roll in the films, but the book just describes her as stern with black hair in a bun.

Sure she taught James and Sirius, but if she started teaching James' 5th year at, say, 24 years old, she'd be only 40 in the first book. Not in her 60s or older as I've always pictured her.

AbbaZabba02 Whoops. Was just reminded my a friend that she tells Umbrage in OotP that she's been at Hogwarts for 39 years. Guess that does put her in her 60s. 1d

A little wine, a little knitting, a little bit of my favorite series ever.

Random thing that hasn't aged well: Dudley knowing what the day of the week is by what TV show is on.
You know his spoiled ass would be binging Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube today. 🤣

I‘ve been feeling really stressed lately and can‘t focus myself on reading so have decided I just need a really good story to get me through the stressful times and have been thinking about rereading Harry Potter for several months now as I was so young when I first read them I can‘t remember much about the books, only the films! All I remember was that I loved them so hopefully these will be a nice escape for me from a busy time!

What‘s to be said about the first HP book? A brilliant start - the illustrated version is simply gorgeous and I‘m glad I finally read it. (The illustrated version that is)

#potteraday

Linsy It is beautiful! I'm glad I finally read through it as well. Adds some new dimensions and reminds me of how much I love these characters. 3w

‘Lucky you pay attention in Herbolgy, Hermione,‘ said Harry as he joined her by the wall, wiping sweat off his face.
‘Yeah,‘ said Ron, ‘and lucky that Harry doesn‘t lose his head in a crisis - “there‘s no wood” honestly.‘

I‘m not really doing #potteraday at this point...

Linsy That's okay! And that's one of my favorite parts 😂 😂 😂 3w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Linsy, I really like the concept but at the same time I found it overwhelming - hopefully I‘ll keep reading HP - I would like to finish a reread. 3w
Linsy I'm sorry, I do understand though. This is the only one I've successfully kept up on. I'm constantly catching up for the LOTR daily read. I tend to read books in big chunks and then have breaks in my normal reading life. 3w

There is so much goodness packed into this book!! It's the little details -- like Snape “breathing down their necks while they tried to remember how to make a Forgetfulness potion“ -- that make it so fun to reread, but I don't know which part I love most. Do y'all have a favorite moment??

Thanks for reading with me! Chamber of Secrets starts Monday. In the meantime, we're doing a rewatch of the movie! Details on the way. ⚡ #potteraday #mounttbr

MissAimz_55 Oooooo!!!! I‘ll rewatch this weekend. I didn‘t get to finish the reread before I left for my trip so I‘ll finish it Saturday morning and do the movie rewatch on Sunday afternoon💗 4w
Linsy Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Jim Kay's amazing artwork! Somehow he manages to capture the feeling of the story and give a new spin on it -- all while not offending my ideas of these characters. His skill is immense. It's seriously incredible! Snapshots can't do it justice. If you don't have a copy, I hope your library does! ❤ 4w
Linsy @MissAimz_55 Yay!! Have fun on your trip! ❤ 4w

Thank you @Linsy for for hosting the #potteraday readalong. This is about the 6th or 7th time I've read this book, but breaking it down to a chapter a day helped me slow down and pay attention to little details I missed before. This time I really appreciated Neville's bumbling goofiness and the twins' mischief. The next time someone gets sick, I'm giving them a toilet seat instead of flowers. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Linsy Haha, perfect! I hadn't noticed the toilet detail connecting to the beginning with Mrs. Weasley before and I loved it! I'm so glad you're enjoying the read-along. It's helping me slow down too. And having you guys here helps keep me to a schedule. And makes it way more fun!! 😁 (edited) 3w

22 Jan: The Man with Two Faces

What a perfect ending for the first book
We learn all that's important for now, and get a little glimpse of what's to come
Harry's shock when he learns Snape saved him
And that Snape and his father knew each other
I appreciate that Fred and George sends Harry a toilet seat 😁
I can just hear Neville telling his family that He won Gryffindor the House Cup
And Ginny's reaction to seeing Harry - so innocently sweet.

Enchanted_Bibliophile Thanks @Linsy for hosting our #PotterADay #ReadAlong for reconnecting with our favourite #HarryPotter characters. 4w

I‘ve read this book quite a few times, but this was my first on audio! I found myself absolutely adoring it. I was surprised by how funny this book is. Jim Dale‘s narration is a little odd, but I love how thoroughly he threw himself into the reading and the characters. Excited to listen to the next one! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

ljuliel I have one Jim Dale ( Around the World in 80 Days). It‘s terrific ! I think the UK Potter audios are done by Stephen Fry ? I‘ve seen lots of discussion online about which is better. 4w
Hestapleton @ljuliel yes me too! I listened to snippets of both, but I think I like Dale‘s better since it‘s more childish/magical. Fry always seems to sound a bit stuffy to me. 4w
Zoes_Human I love the Jim Dale narrations, but I long to hear the Stephen Fry ones because, well, Stephen Fry!

I'm re-listening to these on a timer for bedtime now.
4w
Linsy I love Jim Dale! I've always been curious about Stephen Fry's rendition of it as well though. I wish we could buy both on Audible! By the way, we're rereading, listening, etc. to the books over on #potteraday right now if you want to join in! We just finished Sorcerer's Stone. ❤ 3w
janeycanuck Behind the Mic podcast just released an extended interview with Dale. It was FASCINATING! He was only given 100 pages of book 7 at a time so he had no idea where the book was going as he started narrating. He also used to record phrases in each characters‘ voice so that he could remember what voice he gave them. 3w

I love the Devil's Snare here. Harry calls up to Ron and Hermione because he's landed somewhere comfortable, therefore he assumes it's safe. He and Ron don't even feel the tentacles wrapping around them until Hermione points it out. So creepy!

My copy kept saying they were busy with their “revision“ and I kept thinking: Are they revising an essay or something? I do not remember this part. Turns out it's a British-ism for studying! 😄 #potteraday

Panic70 @AkashaVampie I know it‘s why I love the HP series so much. I love how there isn‘t exactly a happy ending at the end of Sorcerer‘s Stone. Harry has to return to the Dursley‘s. But his friendship with Ron and Hermione make it better. 4w
Linsy Me too!! I especially enjoyed this rhyme about the potions puzzle this time. I wish it included a diagram of the exact bottles as well so we could play along! Sorry to hear about your migraines. I struggle with those too. When it gets so bad that light bothers me, I turn out all the lights, lay in bed and listen to Harry Potter. ❤ (edited) 3w
