The Romanovs
The Romanovs: 1613-1918 | Simon Sebag Montefiore
The Romanovs were the most successful dynasty of modern times, ruling a sixth of the world’s surface for three centuries. How did one family turn a war-ruined principality into the world’s greatest empire? And how did they lose it all? This is the intimate story of twenty tsars and tsarinas, some touched by genius, some by madness, but all inspired by holy autocracy and imperial ambition. Simon Sebag Montefiore’s gripping chronicle reveals their secret world of unlimited power and ruthless empire-building, overshadowed by palace conspiracy, family rivalries, sexual decadence and wild extravagance, with a global cast of adventurers, courtesans, revolutionaries and poets, from Ivan the Terrible to Tolstoy and Pushkin, to Bismarck, Lincoln, Queen Victoria and Lenin. To rule Russia was both imperial-sacred mission and poisoned chalice: six of the last twelve tsars were murdered. Peter the Great tortured his own son to death while making Russia an empire, and dominated his court with a dining club notable for compulsory drunkenness, naked dwarfs and fancy dress. Catherine the Great overthrew her own husband (who was murdered soon afterward), enjoyed affairs with a series of young male favorites, conquered Ukraine and fascinated Europe. Paul I was strangled by courtiers backed by his own son, Alexander I, who in turn faced Napoleon’s invasion and the burning of Moscow, then went on to take Paris. Alexander II liberated the serfs, survived five assassination attempts and wrote perhaps the most explicit love letters ever composed by a ruler. The Romanovs climaxes with a fresh, unforgettable portrayal of Nicholas II and Alexandra, the rise and murder of Rasputin, war and revolution—and the harrowing massacre of the entire family. Dazzlingly entertaining and beautifully written from start to finish, The Romanovs brings these monarchs—male and female, great and flawed, their families and courts—blazingly to life. Drawing on new archival research, Montefiore delivers an enthralling epic of triumph and tragedy, love and murder, encompassing the seminal years 1812, 1914 and 1917, that is both a universal study of power and a portrait of empire that helps define Russia today.

When I started this book I hoped I‘d enjoy it as much as the reviews indicated. It‘s a dense read, heavy on detail and brimming with details of war, power struggles, adultery, torture and the accumulation of territory. This book is an epic, a seriously good read and a compelling tale of Russian politics. An enthralling book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reading this huge book on Romanovs currently and I have to pause often to deal with the violence and cruelty! People complain about torture shown in Game of Thrones. They should read real history to gain some perspective on the real human condition. I often justify the past cruelty by telling myself that those were diff times. But then I remember Syria of today and it horrifies me.

A great overview of the ruling Romanov dynasty. If you are unfamiliar with the time period, there can be some confusion as the focus tends to stay with the family itself. With a bit of background knowledge, the details of the personal lives of the Romanovs become enthralling.

Part of my fascination with the Romanov family is their undying #devotion to the idea they were ordained by God to rule Russia. Their inability to see the changes around them was tragic. Well, much of Russian history is overwhelmingly tragic.

The Romanovs were the ruling dynasty of Russia for over 300 years. The Romanovs by Montefiore discusses the rise, the scandals, the successes, the failures, and the fall of the powerful dynasty in an interesting and captivating way. I have always been obsessed with the Romanovs (esp. the last imperial family) so I really enjoyed this book. I gave it five stars on Goodreads! ✨

Abailliekaras @Simona oh good, glad you found it! Adelaide Writers Week is one of my favourite events. 3y
Simona @Abailliekaras I believe it is, because guest list is impressive .... at least it was last year. 3y
Abailliekaras @Simona not only that, it's all free, and it's held in the beautiful Pioneer Women Memorial Gardens. 😊🌳🍃 3y

CoffeeK8 It's always feast or famine with the library holds 3y
tpixie Great collage!! But the books need to come in one at a time! 3y
Megabooks It seems like there are a lot of Littens in Vegas. Have you ever considered a meet up? I'll be there in March for work and would love to met some people! 3y

BethM This just happened to me too! Three at once on audio for my commutes. 3y
Books_Wine_Repeat @CoffeeK8 @tpixie @BethM That's usually the case with my holds. These are books my library bought because I recommended them. I've had pretty good luck with the library buying the books or audiobooks I recommend. This is why I love my library! ❤❤ (edited) 3y
Books_Wine_Repeat @Ebooksandcooks I know of one other Vegas Litten. Hmm. Would be cool to meet! 😁👍 3y

My dad forgot to give me this for Christmas and he's giving it to me now. He's had it for weeks! Well, today it's still a Holiday in Spain so it's ok. I'm really exited about this book. It is so heavy!

BookishMarginalia Such a pretty cover too! 3y

BookishTrish @reviewsbylola I'm really hoping to get to it this year. My husband read it so long ago he's angling for a reread. 3y
