This was a difficult read in a way, not just because of the subject matter, but because none of the characters were particularly likable. Not like, Gone Girl unlikable. But confusing, un-relatable characters. Yet, some of the ideas she explores really resonated. It‘s hard to explain. And the map, it doesn‘t figure in nearly as much as you‘d think from the title. 🤷🏻‍♀️Glad I read it though. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

Picked these 3 up from the "take-a-book, leave-a-book" community bookshelf today

I'm not sure what A Map of the World is about as it doesn't have a blurb, but its got Oprah's Book Club stamped on it so I'm intrigued

The Blessed is historical fiction, my bag, but why is there a Handmaid on the front? ?

The Road From Coorain by Jill Ker Conway, another Aussie read. A memoir of an Australian childhood on a sheep farm & her adult life in the U.S

Cuilin A Map of the World may make you cry. Great book. 4y
Crazeedi I enjoyed map of the world 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Cuilin Awesome, thanks for letting me know, I'm in need of a story which hugs at the heart strings, I haven't come across one in quite a while. 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Crazeedi Cool! Thanks for the recommendation 😁 4y

First, I feel so bad when I don‘t like a book that someone else picks. This isn‘t my typical read, so that‘s part of it. The book was just so depressing and tragic. The premise of the book was weird. I would‘ve bailed, but it was a #LMPBC pick.

I skimmed the last half of the book 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ the trial and jail scenes were just soo long! But I finally finished the book from Round 3!

Amabear Don‘t worry 😂 it was a terrible pick. I wish I could go back and in pick it. I enjoyed the way she wrote, but it was HARD to get through. 5y
Reviewsbylola Yeah it was a slog. I find that to be the case sometimes with Oprah‘s picks for some reason. 5y
Mdargusch Glad you got through it though. One way or the other. 🙃 5y

As promised, here‘s my #bookhaul from Book Planet‘s sale. All these for $18! The Joy is to replace my paperback copy from the early 80s, which is falling apart. See anything I should bump up on my TBR?

mom2bugnbee I've not read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle but I've heard amazing things. 5y
arubabookwoman A Fine Balance—an absolutely amazing and memorable book! 5y
britt_brooke Nice haul! 5y
Lcsmcat @mom2bugnbee I‘ve enjoyed other Kingsolver books and liked them, so I‘m looking forward to this one. 5y
Lcsmcat @arubabookwoman Great! I picked it because it was an Oprah book club book, and I‘ve found some good books that way. 5y

#BookMail is the best mail!

Hopefully they aren‘t damp or damaged. My mailman is so lazy that they left one package on the ground and the mailbox open in the rain... 🙄 I had one package soaking wet!

Anyway, got the last book for #LMPBC and the Lisa Jewell was a great for myself! 💕

Happy Friday!

Mdargusch Yay! I hope you like A Map of the World! 6y

I‘m not a fan of this type of psychological word fest/character study but I‘m glad I read this one. I love that about #lmpbc - it gets me to read books out of my comfort zone. Today‘s lazy day reading partners are Georgia and Fiona 💗💗

Tragedy strikes Alice while she‘s babysitting her best friend‘s children and she spirals into such a deep depression, all she wants to do is be in a #deepsleep to escape the horror. This book is dark and heartbreaking.

I finished my current #LMPC read in the car just now (sorry group members, my handwriting got a little wobbly 😅). This was a little too melodramatic and overwrought for me, which seems to be a theme for Oprah‘s book club in my experience. I didn‘t always understand the characters and the way they closed in on themselves.

emilyhaldi 😏 6y
Mdargusch Great photo though! 6y
Amabear I enjoyed the style of writing and characters but I agree! I prefer lighter books. It was so heavy. 6y

I‘m about halfway through this and today‘s #abbainaugust prompt, #doesyourmotherknow, instantly made me think of the mother/daughter relationship in this book.

Emma is only five, but there is a lot of resentment, anger, and hurt in her relationship with her mother Alice. A lot of Emma‘s behaviors scream autism to me, and it breaks my heart that her mother feels such a lack of connection to her. The picture is of me and Genevieve at her baptism.

Meredith3 I LOVE this picture 😻😻😻 6y

#BestLastSentences

I don't know if this is the best last sentence (as I haven't even looked at all your posts yet this morning) But this one is pretty good.

????????????

"I had that miraculous clarity for an instant and so I understood that the forgiveness itself was strong, durable, like strands of a web, weaving around us, holding us."

Not owning any books put me on a quest that ended with a different map. This book showed up in my feed recently and I recalled how haunted I was by it, and the story in which an accident occurs that changes the lives of the characters. A brutal, beautiful read. #somethingforsept

#somethingforsept #mademecry I don't own this book because I'm pretty sure it disintegrated from all the crying. First I cried all over it, then my bff cried all over it, then we cried all over it some more together. But it was so good!!! I'm going to make it my #Recommendsday and my #WWW too. I was a faithful Hamilton reader for many years. She really made me care for, and cry over, her characters. @RealLifeReading

MMenefee I read this a long, long time ago. Your great review brought back memories of it. Such a difficult read, beautifully written. 8y
