Imaginary Friend | Steven Chbosky
An event two decades in the making, Stephen Chbosky's IMAGINARY FRIEND redefines the horror genre. Read it with the lights on. Single mother Kate Reese is on the run. Determined to improve life for her and her seven-year-old son, Christopher, she flees an abusive relationship in the middle of the night with Christopher at her side. Together, they find themselves drawn to the tight-knit community of Mill Grove, Pennsylvania. It's as far off the beaten track as they can get. Just one highway in, one highway out. At first, it seems like the perfect place to finally settle down. Then Christopher vanishes. For six awful days, no one can find him. Until Christopher emerges from the woods at the edge of town, unharmed but not unchanged. He returns with a voice in his head only he can hear, with a mission only he can complete: Build a tree house in the woods by Christmas, or his mother and everyone in the town will never be the same again. Soon Kate and Christopher find themselves in the fight of their lives, caught in the middle of a war playing out between good and evil, with their small town as the battleground.

As blue is my favorite color I could have easily gone several directions with today's prompt. I love joining in the monthly discussion on the BOTM selections & the confetti graphic that pops up when your box is complete 🎉🎉 but I don't think I've ever mentioned how distinct their packaging is. When I'm walking towards my front door nothing jumps out as fast as the blue BOTM box. They also package their books better than Amazon. Pictured on the 👇

vivastory Left is Fforde's "Early Riser". The strangest & one of my favorite BOTM selections of the year. On the right are 3 books still in their packaging. ? #trueblue #MOvember @Cinfhen 3d
JanuarieTimewalker13 Oooh, I‘m so happy you mentioned Early Riser...I‘ve been intrigued by that one!! I keep looking at it but I won‘t do an add on. Maybe I‘ll use it as a free book, I think you get after a year membership. Do you get a free book for your bday too? (edited) 3d

I understand that this was supposed to be a Stephen King type epic, but there are too many insignificant characters and the plot eventually just gets stuck. Moments that are supposed to be deep are cliched and repeated too often. By chapter 100, I had to switch to the audiobook to finish and the payoff was lame. Argh! The first half was promising.

Loved this book. Very Stephen King like and I did guess the direction it was going, mainly because I‘ve read so many of these themed books.
Don‘t read if you don‘t like long, rambling books that expect you to suspend any rational thinking.

After the first 50 or so pages I thought I was reading a horror classic. After 400 it was on course to be a pick - good story, characters worth investing in and growing suspense with each page. Then he started to lose me. I wasnt a huge fan of the direction that the plot took towards the end and it all started to feel too drawn out. I do see why some people loved this though and can imagine it making a good TV adaptation.

Godpants The end is not good, but I did like the extra twist. 1w

This started out strong, but ultimately has an agenda I don't approve of for horror. I can't say much more than that without giving away the plot twist. I wouldn't have stuck it out, but I'd already invested so much time in it. The ending was so poorly written and the concept makes me ill. Howevever, shout out to Christine Lakin, the audio narrator, who was good and made it bearable to listen to.

DeeLew I liked this one but wasn‘t crazy about the religious theme. It also dragged on so long that it was almost torturous. I think with some editing I would have loved it, even with the religious themes. 2w

Well I finally finished this beast last night. When all is said and done, I‘m not really sure how I feel. My two main thoughts are that it was a bit predictable, and I was getting really sick of all the “close calls” towards the end. Also, I chose to read this because I wanted a scary book, but this didn‘t do it for me in that aspect. I‘ll have to mull this one over a bit.

Reviewsbylola The page count is causing me to put this one off. I have a feeling it won‘t be worth it for me. 3w
