The Long Call | Ann Cleeves
From Ann Cleevesbestselling and award-winning author of the Vera and Shetland series, both of which are hit TV showscomes the first in a gripping new series. Ann Cleeves is one of my favorite mystery writers.Louise Penny In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his fathers funeral takes place. Once loved and cherished, the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death. The case calls Matthew back into the community he thought he had left behind, as deadly secrets hidden at its heart are revealed, and his past and present collide. An astonishing new novel told with compassion and searing insight, The Long Call will captivate fans of Vera and Shetland, as well as new readers.

A little more review of the book. 451 characters not enough🙂 Matthew Venn is a very likable detective, his main staff of Jen and Ross have lots of potential. They are still learning to work together. I'm really looking forward to seeing their development. I also am enjoying learning of another beautiful part of England.

The Long Call by Ann Cleeves is the first in a new series of Defective Matthew Venn. It holds up well to her Vera and Shetland series. It takes place inDevon England. It is well described, I felt like I was there, smelling the sea hearing the birds, seeing small town life. The mystery involves a murdered man who had links to a care center for mentally disabled adults, an evangelical community that Venn had ties to.
The plot is good.I recommend it

TrishB Looking forward to this one- finishing the Shetland series first. 5d

A good start, a new series by Ann Cleeves. I enjoyed it, although I‘m waiting to see where this series will take us. The main character is a gay peeler with a religious sect like background. He‘s a bit awkward and asocial, but I can see a lot of potential for a good series. In the first book a man is found dead, and then a woman with Down syndrome is kidnapped. What is going on? Find out by reading the book!

I‘ve watched the TV series based on Ann Cleeves‘ other detectives so I was excited that she‘s introduced a new detective. This was a good mystery that had a lot of layers. I‘m looking forward to what comes next for Detective Venn and the other continuing characters.

#netgalley #MinotaurBooks

Characters are the strong point of this 1st book in a new series. They are complicated, realistic, and sometimes unlikeable but still sympathetic. The first half of the book moved too slowly for me; I need more urgency and suspense. The detectives missed some pretty obvious clues, which I found frustrating. I don't know if authors do this purposely, so the reader feels smart figuring things out, but I find it annoying.

Slajaunie It is very annoying. We are not stupid. 2mo

Finally finished this book, I don‘t think I‘ll be making 24hrs this time🤷🏻‍♀️I really liked this one, the setting was beautiful & the new MC was great, a flawed man but kind & compassionate he heads the case of a man found stabbed on a beach near his house. The case ends up linked to the day centre his husband runs & Matthew‘s concerned he should recuse himself. Then a young Down‘s syndrome girl goes missing from the centre. #24B4Monday #readathon

I only have about 70pges to go in this new series by the author, but I‘ve already smacked the book into my face twice while dozing off. I need to have a nap before my daughter brings over her new boyfriend for the first time, otherwise I‘ll be nodding off in the middle of conversation. Really loving this, The MC is very different from Vera & Perez but the setting, while also different, is familiar as well with the sea very prominent. #24B4Monday

It‘s 8.45am Saturday here in Sydney and I‘ve been up all night! Planning on getting in *hopefully* the last quarter of this book before having a few hours sleep before getting back into it. Next up is the 1st in a new series by Ann Cleeves. I love both her Vera series & her Shetland books so have high hopes for this one. In North Devon, Detective Matthew Venn is ostracized from the evangelical community he grew up in, but now he‘s back, in charge of the murder investigation of a man found stabbed on a beach. Finding the killer is his only focus, even when it takes him back to the the church he turned his back on years ago.

#TBRtemptation post 4! After 20 years, Cleeves begins a new series, this is the just-released first installment in the Two Rivers crime fiction series. In North Devon, Detective Matthew Venn is at his father‘s funeral. He receives a call about a body on a nearby beach, a man with an albatross tattoo on his neck has been stabbed to death. He must investigate in among the community he left behind. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

One of my favorite things about Ann Cleeves writing is her ability to make the setting a character as well. It's one reasons I loved her Shetland series. This time it's Devon. Once again I'm getting out my Big Britain Road Atlas to find the best Route.

More Review in the Comments. But long story short; I look forward to reading more of this series. 📚
#coverlove #literarytravels #devon

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1st in new Two Rivers series and it introduces Detective Matthew Venn. He's quiet, introspective, and sometimes unsure of social settings. Interesting backstory of leaving his parents strict evangelical religion. I'd definitely read a prequel of how he became the man he is today; good at his job and happily married. You get some of that here but you know there's more to the story.

3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I also like Sergeant Jen Rafferty. She's the total opposite of her boss. Fiery personality. Divorced from abusive husband with teen age children. It makes for a good team. 3mo
emmaturi I loved the Shetland books, never read the Vera ones. I will try this new series! 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @emmaturi I've read all of Shetland which I loved. I've only read one Vera it's was good and I'll read more but this one really grabbed me. Probably the whole leaving your parents religion thing. Been there. Done that. Although not nearly as dramatically as Matthew Venn. 3mo

September is the month for new releases, there‘s some amazing books out this month. Jen thought she'd remember that next time she got cold callers at the door. ' We're not selling anything. We're police officers.'🤣

St. Martin‘s/Minotaur Books consistently publishes some of my absolute favorite books. I don‘t know why I liked this one when I really disliked the first of Cleeves‘s Shetland books, but I will likely buy a finished copy and am looking forward to more in this series. I‘m really glad I gave Cleeves another chance. A solid procedural mystery.

rabbitprincess I'm so-so on the Shetland series myself, but I really like Vera! And this new series sounds great 😄 3mo
DGRachel @rabbitprincess If you try it, I‘d really love to know what you think, especially since you didn‘t love Shetland. That makes me even more curious about Vera. 😊 3mo
rabbitprincess @DGRachel With Shetland the thing that puts me off is being in Perez's head when he thinks about women...maybe because his thoughts come across as more sexual than romantic. And with the first book, I was like "There are only so many people it can be! Just figure it out already!" Vera is less of a locked-room setting and she is forthright and assertive. (edited) 3mo
rabbitprincess @DGRachel That said, I still want to watch the Shetland TV series; it doesn't strictly follow the books and wouldn't be in Perez's head so much. Also the setting is admittedly gorgeous! 3mo
DGRachel @rabbitprincess Vera definitely sounds more my speed, thank you! 3mo

I enjoyed this beginning to a new contemporary detective series set in North Devon featuring Detective Matthew Venn. Lots of characters who might have featured in the murder/abductions and some twists/turns. Venn will probably be more fleshed out in future offerings but strikes me as a conflicted, complicated soul stemming in large part from his upbringing. Would definitely read more. 4/5⭐️

NetGalley ARC of Ann Cleeves‘ new Two Rivers series. DI Matthew Venn gets a call from his DS about a body found on the beach near the home of Matthew and his partner, Jonathan, while attending his estranged father‘s funeral. I like Cleeves‘ writing and enjoyed but didn‘t love this book. I think Matthew may take a little getting used to - he seems a little too insecure for a DI. The ending was unexpected in a good way. 4.0/5.0⭐️ #2019
