Had this #AuldLangSpine pick checked out since January and I‘m binging it this weekend before it absolutely has to go back to the library. I‘m not loving it so far, but maybe the investigation will pick up soon. #weekendreads

Dart | Alice Oswald

Dart is a long-form poem about the river Dart in Devon. It follows the flow of the river from source to the sea whilst also exploring those we find along the river. Oswald uses the voices of real people she interviewed to inform the voices in her poem and the authenticity truly comes across, whilst weaving in mythic and historic cultural voices too. i.z.booknook The language was very intricate, clever and vivid, doing both the beautiful and difficult places and people justice. 1mo

The brutal massacre of the Harford family at Potwoolstan Hall in Devon in 1985 shocked the country and passed into local folklore. And when a journalist researching the case is murdered twenty years later, the horror is reawakened.

EadieB Sixteenth century Potwoolstan Hall, now a New Age healing centre, is reputed to be cursed because of the crimes of its builder, and it seems that this inheritance of evil lives on as DI Wesley Peterson is faced with his most disturbing case yet. As more people die violently, Wesley needs to discover why a young woman has transformed a dolls house into a miniature reconstruction of the massacre scene. 3mo
EadieB And could the solution to his case lie across the Atlantic Ocean, in the ruined remains of an early English settlement in Virginia USA? When the truth is finally revealed, it turns out to be as horrifying as it is dangerous.
The mass murder at Potwoolstan Hall in 1985 has a lot of characters that have changed their name in this modern day mystery which was never solved in 1985.

EadieB The characters are a bit confusing and hard to keep straight. Wesley and Pam's marriage is going through a tough period as she is taking care of 2 children by herself and her husband is always at work. I'm hoping their marriage gets straighten out and Wesley and Pam stay together. If you like murder with lots of characters then you will love this book. I'm looking forward to the next installment of this Wesley Peterson book! 3mo

The previous story of the railway detective I found disappointing. I also found this book slow and labouring at the start, it was as if the author had lost his way. Gone was the exciting openings I had associated with the books in this series. The slow start was hiding, what turned out to be a really interesting case with some exciting moments. Although it was obvious where the diary and cash was hidden the ending was more than satisfactory.

I have watched all the TV shows based on Ann Cleeves‘ detective series but I haven‘t read many of them. With this newer series I‘ve stayed caught up with their releases. I enjoy the recurring characters in this series, especially the main detective. You get a lot of their background and inner thoughts. The setting is also well done, and plays a role in the mystery.

As always Cleeves writes a good detective novel- I think I guessed with about 10 pages to go!

Andrew65 Typical Ann Cleeves, she always holds her cards close to her chest and you can‘t work things out until right towards the very end. Well done 👏👏👏 (edited) 6mo

In terms of enjoyment, this sits between book 1 and book 2 of the series for me. The action felt more fast-paced or at least adventurous than the second book; maybe that was the influence of the pirate, smuggler, and sailing stories that were central to the plot. I also liked seeing more of Ross and Jen and how Ross and Matthew agree or don‘t with each other.
