There's Something about Sweetie
There's Something about Sweetie | Sandhya Menon
The irresistible companion novel to the New York Times bestseller When Dimple Met Rishi, which follows Rishi's brother, Ashish, and a confident fat athlete named Sweetie as they both discover what love means to them. Ashish Patel didn't know love could be so...sucky. After being dumped by his ex-girlfriend, his mojo goes AWOL. Even worse, his parents are annoyingly, smugly confident they could find him a better match. So, in a moment of weakness, Ash challenges them to set him up. The Patels insist that Ashish date an Indian-American girl--under contract. Per subclause 1(a), he'll be taking his date on "fun" excursions like visiting the Hindu temple and his eccentric Gita Auntie. Kill him now. How is this ever going to work? Sweetie Nair is many things: a formidable track athlete who can outrun most people in California, a loyal friend, a shower-singing champion. Oh, and she's also fat. To Sweetie's traditional parents, this last detail is the kiss of death. Sweetie loves her parents, but she's so tired of being told she's lacking because she's fat. She decides it's time to kick off the Sassy Sweetie Project, where she'll show the world (and herself) what she's really made of. Ashish and Sweetie both have something to prove. But with each date they realize there's an unexpected magic growing between them. Can they find their true selves without losing each other?

Sandhya Menon's third YA novel, There's Something about Sweetie, is a beautiful followup to her first (and my favorite!) When Dimple Met Rishi. This new book focuses on the relationship between Ashish (brother to Rishi from book 1) and Sweetie, a self-proclaimed fat athlete whose traditional South Asian mother constantly criticizes her weight. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod Menon says, in her Author's Note, that she "wanted to write honest conversations between a fat Indian-American teen and her mother. [She] wanted to put the same messaging [she]--and so many others--got onto the page, and [she] wanted to have this strong, beautiful main character refute it on the page." Through the novel, those goals are obvious. ⬇️ 4d
UnabridgedPod There were times when I was taken out of the storyline because of the explicit passages addressing the stated issue. Ultimately, though, I loved this book and these characters. The novel alternates between the perspectives of Ashish and Sweetie, and each is endearingly sweet and vulnerable and true to the teenager she (and he) is. 4d
JoyBlue I just stacked When Dimple Met Rishi. Thanks! 4d

Another adorable YA Romance from Menon! I don‘t think I liked it quite as much as “When Dimple Met Rishi,” but I loved Sweetie. She was such a great character! I also enjoyed that this story included the theme of self-love and acceptance, separate from the romantic storyline.

I‘m in the mood for some fun reads this month! Carry On will be a reread via audiobook, and I‘m also finishing up The City in the Middle of the Night and need to read Sky Without Stars for my YA book club, which I‘ve got waiting for me on my Kindle. What are you hoping to read this month? #tbr

I love this Indian American author - her books are nice and light but have a good message. I haven‘t read the tagged book yet but the other two are really cute. The teen characters are also Indian American but their families are from #India and very traditional. #letstraveljuly

I would've taken a picture of my dog, but her paws were super muddy, so another photo of morning sun on the trees it is!

The amount of wealth on display with Ashish's family makes me feel weird, but Sweetie is such a loveable and compelling character that she makes up for it. I'm only about 40% of the way through, but watching her journey to not just loving herself, but not being ashamed of loving herself, has been an utter delight so far!

Sweet YA that gets at deep issues around parental torture and weight (yes, it‘s child abuse), the feelings of being a player and wanting to change that, Friend Squad goals, and much more. Nice coming of age tale that‘s s great companion to When Dimple Met Rishi! #youngadult #romance

First I'm clearly getting old as 17 year olds in love make me mentally roll my eyes. But I was in the right mood for it so it seemed more charming than tooth-rotting. I loved Sweetie's bravery & would hope my daughter & all the young women I know would be confident enough to take a stand for themselves. Overall this was a total feel good listen; the narration was great too.I could have used books like this when I was a teen.

🎧🚙 I only started this today but I already 1- can't wait to get back in the car to listen to more of it and 2- feel horrified on Sweetie's behalf. As someone who has always struggled with weight, her mother's attitude is heartbreaking and I want to give her a big hug. Since I'm home now I'm hoping to finish up #EoE.

OK, this tastes much more delicious than it looks since I kind of just threw it in a bowl. Store-bought California Roll Ahi Poke, leftover brown rice & homemade quick-pickled sweet peppers & mini cucumbers.🐟🍚Totally hit the spot on a warm summer night. I really liked When Dimple Met Rishi so I grabbed this companion novel at the library today.

Even though I was gone I was still reading so I‘ll be randomly posting some of the books I was reading #inmyabsence! I just read this and I love Menon‘s writng style. I love the way she writes young adult romance. I love the way she portrays the mix of Indian and American culture. In this book I enjoyed the way she discussed complex teenagers/parent relationships and the way she handled accepting ones body and what its capable of. She makes...

TheNextBook ...very clear from the beginning the message she wants to convey and the reason she is using certain language and I thought she was effective. Plus I love Sweetie. Ashish is adorable and I love that we got to see bits and pieces of Dimple and Rishi who I also love! 2mo
MallenNC I've enjoyed all her books but I think this was my favorite of all. Sweetie is such a great character. 2mo
TheNextBook @MallenNC agreed! Dimple and Rishi is my favorite! I teread that before reading this one and it is so good! This one was so great! 2mo

Simply adorable. When opposites attract and it ends up actually being love. Sweetie‘s relationship with her mother both breaks my heart and pisses me off. I just want her mom to open her eyes! Ashish has lost his mojo and honestly I‘m glad because I couldn‘t have taken him being a player douche...

This was the perfect book to read after finishing some more difficult reads. I love the author‘s style and she always does a good job giving her characters interests outside of the main relationship that drives the narrative. Sweetie was a fun, strong character!

Today's book haul from The Book Loft in Columbus, OH. The Boynton board books were all 50% off and will go in various baby presents. Shout, The Female of the Species, and Let Me Hear a Rhyme are all signed by the authors as a bonus! Plus, who could resist pigeon socks? A gift certificate from my in-laws covered a little over half and I splurged on the rest. Happy 40th Birthday to me!

I absolutely LOVED Sweetie and Ashish! There story was so sweet. What I didn't love about this book was Sweetie's mom. She was awful. She thought Sweetie shouldn't be able to date certain people because she was fat or even do certain things. I thought this book had such an amazing body image message! The author showed that it doesn't matter what you look like you are enough! 💜💜

This is a sweet YA romance with an awesome heroine. Sweetie‘s mom is awful though. I was enraged by her. Ashish wasn‘t the greatest love interest as he made some really poor choices but Sweetie made up for all his bad qualities. She is so awesome and I adored her.

I was provided an advanced copy of this book by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
