A Noise Downstairs
A Noise Downstairs | Linwood Barclay
The internationally bestselling author of No Time for Goodbye returns with a haunting psychological thriller that blends the twists and chills of Stephen King and Edgar Allan Poe with the driving suspense of Dennis Lehane and Harlan Coben, in which a man hears sounds that quite possibly emanate from the dead. Paul Davis is hearing some very strange noises in the night. He hears the clickety-click of a manual typewriter--as if someone is vigorously tapping the keys. The eerie sounds began soon after his wife, Charlotte, bought him a classic antique Underwood. But only Paul can hear the noise coming from downstairs; Charlotte doesn't hear anything unusual. Is Paul losing his mind? Maybe. Or is something really there? Eight months ago, he stumbled upon Connecticut's infamous "Apology Killer"--a psychopath who forced his victims to typewrite personal apologies to him before he cut their throats--disposing of two mutilated bodies on Milford's Post Road. Most shocking of all, the killer was his colleague, someone he thought he knew. Paul's been seeing a therapist for months to recover from the nearly fatal encounter, but his nerves and short-term memory have suffered since the traumatic event. There's only one way to learn if the noises are real or a figment of his hyper-imagination. One night, Paul rolls a sheet of paper into the machine. The next morning, when he checks the page, there is a chilling message: "We typed our apologies like he asked but he killed us anyway." As he desperately searches to find a rational explanation for the note and the noises, Paul slowly begins to consider the unthinkable: The message is authentic, and the women butchered by his colleague are reaching out to him from beyond the grave.

Here‘s the mass market paperbacks & hardbacks I‘ve gotten recently. They were all on sale! One of the Barnes & Nobles near me had a 20% off on mass market paperbacks, which I‘m a sucker for anyway, so ahh! I have soooo many books plus I‘m constantly getting books from the library.

I pieced together a few things, which is something I am especially loving about Barclay‘s books. Nothing is obvious, but if you pay close attention, playing detective proves to be quite satisfying. I certainly didn‘t figure it all out, and I was especially off on motives, but I still smugly patted myself on the back for what I did get right - haha!

No bingos on my November 2021 #BookSpinBingo, and none of the free spaces used 🙀 It was a bit of a slow month, plus I discovered Stardew Valley streamers on Twitch 😅 I might finish Range tonight; if so, I‘ll update the photo.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Still a great month, especially considering how distracting Stardew Valley can be! 😂 2y
rabbitprincess @TheAromaofBooks I know right? Last weekend I basically played it ALL weekend 🤣 2y
TheAromaofBooks I've been replaying Red Dead Redemption II and basically spending all my time picking plants and hunting for collectible items while also trying to tame one of every kind of horse in the game 😂 I really want to start a new farm on Stardew this winter & have been in the process of creating a complex tracking system that would be a complete waste of time if I didn't enjoy it so much LOL 2y
See All 6 Comments
rabbitprincess @TheAromaofBooks Ahahaha I think creating a complex tracking system is in some way a key part of the Stardew experience 🤣 Which farm layout do you think you‘ll use? I started a Beach farm for a bit of an extra challenge. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I haven't decided!!! The first time I played I literally knew nothing about the game except my brother liked it so I didn't even realize I could choose a layout different from the default one. After I played with that one for a few Stardew years, I started new with more knowledge (lol) & used the Hilltop Farm - the quarry was super fun. I'm thinking about either the Beach or the Riverland for next time because those look really challenging!! 2y
rabbitprincess @TheAromaofBooks Oh yeah, the Riverland one looks like a challenge for organizing everything! My first and second farms were Four Corners because my BF played with me on multiplayer to get me started. I like having the little quarry and the built-in division of space 😄 Once I‘ve built up the Beach farm enough I think I‘ll try either Forest or Hilltop with remixed community centre bundles 😊 2y

3.5 ⭐️

Pauls normal life breaks down after facing a murderer. Missing memories, an old typewriter and messages from the dead send him into a spiraling voyage.

The humor was too dry for my liking but the suspense kept me around. Most of the twist and turns I saw coming especially when it came to a certain female character. I still enjoyed the journey and would love to read more of Barclay‘s work.

This author was recommended to me, but I wasn‘t impressed with this book. I actually saw one of the “big reveals” coming, and I‘m not usually good at that. I‘d like to believe that I‘m becoming more prescient, but know that it‘s much more likely that the twist was just that obvious. 😁 I‘m going to try another one and hope it‘s better!

MyNamesParadise I‘m a fan of Barclays but haven‘t read that one yet! How is it? 4y
BeansPage @MyNamesParadise so far, so good. This one has an interesting concept. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I enjoyed this one a lot, but sometimes I feel like thrillers go “one twist too far“ - and this was one of those instances, so I'll be interested to see what you think of the ending, which I felt like sacrificed some credulity to get more WHAAAAA feelings at the end haha 4y
riversong153 I read and liked this one as well. It‘s been a while but I think I would agree with @TheAromaofBooks I love a good thriller and twists but it gets kind of tropey! If that‘s a word?! Lol 4y

I've been meaning to read Barclay for several months, especially after all of the positive Litsy reviews. It opens with college professor Paul Davis surviving an attack by one of his colleagues. Several months later, as part of his therapeutic process, he begins writing about the attack & the motivations of the man responsible. In one part of the book he forgets a character's last name & calls them Hitchcock, Barclay clearly signaling his 👇

vivastory influence & intention. Easily one of the best, & most sophisticated, mysteries I've read all year. Barclay doesn't draw out his red herrings as filler & he doesn't make the twists into gimmicks. I read this one in a sitting, will definitely be reading more. 4y

The cliffhanger ending chapter 9 gives you a deeper analogy to the plot of the book. Something about the blood on the typewriter gave me a bit of a foreseen thought of the connection it will bring the character Paul to the understanding behind the killings done by his old colleague.

I wanted a change of pace from all of the non-fiction I have been reading recently & I was not disappointed. I found myself skimming through the middle, but the short chapters make it easy to pick up and set down, & the fast-paced story telling kept me guessing (incorrectly) until the end. I was skeptical at first that this would be your typical who-done-it story, but was delightfully surprised in the end. 3/5 stars.

I have to admit I listened to most of this in one go. However I think that was more based on the fact that I was packing up my entire life and both needed something to entertain and distract me. I was hoping for a far more chilling novel; this lacks in depth and development with too many twists that toward the end turn it into a kind of amusing soap opera where you're waiting for the guy to *surprise* not be dead at all. It entertained.

Overall, listening to this audio book was a waste of my time. There were so many issues. The first is that the narrator does a terrible job with the women characters. It's so bad, that it was distracting. Also, the use of potential ghosts in a thriller, is just a lazy plot device. But, the biggest flaw was that it was neither suspenseful nor thrilling. It was utterly predictable. I would skip this one since it adds nothing to the genre.

The story is gripping and although it had some corny dialogue and very direct language, it kept me interested all throughout. I didn‘t guess who did it—but had definitely narrowed it down to 3 people (although I was hoping it was actually a ghost). A fun thriller with an unpredictable ending!
