Ahhh, so good. When I was younger, I wouldn‘t have thought twice about four young friends going on a hike like this one. But now, it‘s horrifying to think of how dangerous it was. I loved the coming-of-age aspect and the narrator‘s nostalgia as he told this true tale from his childhood. Just an all-around great story by the master.

Next up #readingStephenKing: The Breathing Method which is the last novella in the Different Seasons collection.

Following tradition my final book of the year will be a Stephen King. I actually have not read anything by King in a very very long time so I am really looking forward to this. My first book of '23 will be an Agatha Christie. I haven't decided which one yet though.

@booknaround

LeahBergen I like that you have these traditions. 😄 1y
vivastory @LeahBergen Tradition is important lol What is going to be your final book of the year? 1y
LeahBergen I think it will be this one that I‘ve just started (a completely random shelf grab 😆) 1y

vivastory @LeahBergen Oh, man. Have you seen Goodnight Mommy? I watched the original a few months ago & it really got under my skin 1y
LeahBergen @vivastory I haven‘t! I was just reading that comparison and now I‘ll have to look it up. 1y
LeahBergen And I know you and I have discussed our love of the ‘evil child‘ trope in the past! 😆 1y
Reggie Twinkies, I started his The Long Walk tonight. The first kid just got gunned down because of a charley horse. 1y
vivastory @LeahBergen Haha, yes! I do love a good evil children story. I will def be keeping an eye out for your thoughts on this one! 1y
vivastory @Reggie Max Booth said that if he could adapt any King book into a movie he'd want to adapt that one. Brutal. That was my final book of 2019. I remember finishing it right before midnight & wiping tears away. Good times. 1y
Aimeesue One of his best! 1y
BookNAround How cool you have a tradition around your first book of the year. I‘m completely chaotic in how I choose mine. 😂 1y
Rileytmurray Read this one for school and I rely enjoyed it!! 1y
vivastory @Aimeesue I agree! Very underrated IMO! 1y
vivastory @BookNAround I'm very much a mood reader, so my reading tends to also be chaotic but as I like to begin the yr with a fresh book I try to plan it out a little bit. I usually start with a choice from my #newyearwhodis list but I didn't enter this year as I had too much going on at the time 1y

I‘m one of those people that appreciates a well developed villain almost more than the main character. Ace Merrill is a perfect example of this. I love to hate him. He‘s not a great person, but I love every minute I get to spend with his character. What about you? Do you have any characters that are technically villains, but you can‘t get enough of them. Come on join the club. 😂

🎧 50% through this book & I‘ve never seen it but it sounds like the premise for the movie ”Stand By Me”!

Its 1960 in Castlerock. 4 young boys search for the dead body of a missing boy Ray Brower not knowing how much death will impact them. It‘s a coming of age in a nowhereville small town story. So many side stories and hilarious period vernacular that I won‘t share here!

Frank Muller = good narration, it fit with this 60‘s story.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Maya.McClan The opening credits for “Stand By Me” says based off the book “The Body” 😊 3y

My first King and it was so good! In some ways it reminded me of The Sandlot, about friendship in the last days of childhood, summer adventures. I didn‘t love everything, but I‘m willing to try some other King works - good thing I have a few to choose from!

After the first sentence I realized that this novel was the basis for the film “Stand By Me”. An iconic coming-of-age novel, 4 tween boys go in search of the young Ray Brower, who allegedly lies dead near a river miles away. I remember the film, with Corey Feldman and the late River Phoenix. Unforgettable!

Better known as "Stand By Me" for those who didn't know the classic movie was originally a Stephen King novel. A whomping 180 pages to keep you busy for a few minutes. It's the quintessential coming of age story, capturing the rawness of childhood friendships. It's short and sweet, at least as sweet as King could be, and I may have gotten a little watery eyed at the end, even knowing what was coming.

Due to my work schedule, it took me longer to read this than I care to admit.

This short story is the inspiration behind the movie stand by me. 4 friends take a trip by foot to see if a dead body is really there. Along the way they encounter many different obstacles.

I personally have never seen the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It's different than Stephen Kings typical story. It shows how friendships can grow stronger and break apart.

The Body by Stephen King is a wonderful tale about the rise and fall of the friendship between a group of boys over the course of one morbid adventure and the aftermath of that event.

This was another book that I read for the Spring Into Horror Readathon and of course, I loved it!!

As a child from the 80s, I reckon it‘s a travesty that I‘ve never seen the movie Stand By Me. 😱 But I wanted to read the book first. It started out slow, but by the time I finished it I could truly appreciate yet another brilliant story by the great Stephen King. Then, I naturally had to watch the movie afterwards. It did not disappoint and is a great adaptation that sticks closely to the story. 4⭐️

Y is for Youth, and the skillful way King recaptures it in just about every novel. From the innocence of children, to kids on the brink of adolescence, King tells their stories of fear, bravery, loneliness, isolation, love, & self-determination faithfully. Their struggles are not diminished by their youth - he honors them all with a careful examination of their motives & choices. And his stories are richer for it.
