Fierce Fairytales
Fierce Fairytales: And Other Stories to Stir Your Soul | Nikita Gill
70 posts | 37 read | 106 to read
Poet, writer, and Instagram sensation Nikita Gill returns with a collection of fairytales poetically retold for a new generation of women. Traditional fairytales are full of clich and gender stereotypes: beautiful, silent princesses; ugly, jealous, and bitter villainesses; girls who need rescuing; and men who take the glory. But in Nikita Gill's new prose and poetry collection, Fierce Fairytales: And Other Stories to Stir Your Soul, she rewrites the fairytale classics and reworks their old-fashioned tropes into empowering and inspirational stories. Meet the grief-stricken Ursula, the troubled Wendy Darling, the wolf in the concrete jungle, and the courageous Gretel who can bring down monsters on her own...

I enjoyed this for the most part. I thought the pieces where she took well known tales and told them from every character‘s perspective were the ones that made the biggest impression. @TsundokuAleax @bookandcat

TsundokuAleax I love her poems about the villains. They were fascinating and wonderful. I am finding the memes about understanding Disney villains more as I get older to be very accurate. 2mo

This book of poetry and feminist fairytale retellings was so empowering, inspiring, and impactful. 5 stars easily. Thanks for selecting it for #lmpbc @TsundokuAleax !
Unfortunately my Joshilyn Jackson book for this round (and last rotation's Washington Black) seem to have been lost by the post office. Hopefully this one will get to @Schlinkles safely!

Schlinkles @bookandcat I sure hope so too!! 5mo

TsundokuAleax @bookandcat Symposium. A friend did an original edit and it is a beast. We are actually getting together to edit it tonight. This is probably the 3rd or 4th edit we have done to this portion. And I have it the worst of the whole cast 5mo
bookandcat @TsundokuAleax eek good luck! 5mo
TsundokuAleax Thanks. I am currently in melt mode because we have two weeks left. Thankfully the rehearsal schedule is light 5mo
bookandcat @Schlinkles since the books have not turned up, would you like me to get you a replacement copy of Washington Black? I am happy to send one. It won't have the notes though :-( 4mo
Schlinkles @bookandcat It‘s sweet of you to offer, but really not necessary. It was just an ARC. Thank you though. 4mo

This was a fascinating turn of fiercely feminine fairy tales. I loved the way they turned some of the stories on their heads and even more so the villainesses. I am so glad that this is going to the rest of book club and I cannot wait to see what everyone else thinks.

#unpopularopinion but this was just a so-so for me. While there was a time in my life when I would have identified with the whole “I am woman, hear me roar” idea, it was a bit overdone here. It made me sad in a way. On a brighter note, I suppose I‘m blessed that I no longer feel either limited or defined by this concept.

I can see why this brand of Instagram poetry would appeal to younger readers... 15 year old me would have devoured it and felt greatly empowered.

Unfortunately, adult me is harder to impress, and this particular volume has some very strange rhyming and sentence structure. 😐 I'm very meh over the whole thing.

My reading buddy, Ivy, and I are really enjoying this collection! Part of me wants to rush through, and finish this slim beauty quickly, but I‘m trying to make myself stop frequently to absorb and contemplate what I‘m reading. This is a struggle for me with poetry collections in general, lol. But, such a great read so far! Thank you @BridgetteM Great pick! #HappilyEverAfterSwap

Fierce is right. Gill pulls no punches with her brazen, raw, intelligent reboots and mashups.

Recommended if you like poetry by #RupiKaur or if you‘re looking for in-your-face feminist fairy-tale retellings.

The illustrations were beautiful, the book cover was aesthetic perfection, and some of the poems were fabulous, particularly some of the twists in the retellings. Unfortunately, some fell flat and came across a bit cringey.

I found the content repetitive and the writing lackluster. Not surprisingly, I liked the Baba Yaga story the most.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

52 week reading challenge: A book of poetry (2)

Nikita Gill‘s powerful book of poetry and short stories rips apart everything we‘ve known to be true within the fairy tales we‘ve grown up on. With eloquence and empowering words, she boldly attacks the dangerous subtleties and reminds us that we can be so much more.

This is a beautiful book that encouraged me, comforted me, and took my breath away.

Gill delivered everything I wanted in this collection of poems and short stories with a fairytale theme. She tackles difficult subjects like eating disorders and abuse with a creative spin and fantastical flair. Some of the selections were so unexpected that I had to reread them several times to make sure I was getting all of the flavors. I loved her switch on classic tales - delivering them from the villain's point of view was fun. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a wonderful selection of poetry. The perfect combination of fairytales and feminism, magical and enlightening. I particularly like the way Gill gives back stories to villains and doesn‘t apologise for Tinker-bell‘s anger. This is going to be my new comfort re-read!

Hornsby78 Nikita Gill has become a favorite of mine over this past year. A piece of her poetry will pop up just when I need it most and it has happened numerous times. She is a kick ass feminist writer. 12mo

5/5🌟Beautiful, Creative and Empowering!
Classic fairy tales are so wrought with cliches and stereotypes. But this book, through verses has creativity and beautifully reimagined all that by empowering instead. Sharing her take on mental illness, abuse, love, feminism and exploring different character personalities as well, villains and heroes.
A beautiful book inside and out!!

Surprise! I went Kindle shopping last night and this morning. Just when I‘m trying to focus on holiday presents! So, from left to right.
