A mesmerizing novel in verse about family, identity, and finding yourself in the most unexpected places--for fans of The Poet X, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, and Jason Reynolds. Nima doesn't feel understood. By her mother, who grew up far away in a different land. By her suburban town, which makes her feel too much like an outsider to fit in and not enough like an outsider to feel like that she belongs somewhere else. At least she has her childhood friend Haitham, with whom she can let her guard down and be herself.Until she doesn't. As the ground is pulled out from under her, Nima must grapple with the phantom of a life not chosen, the name her parents didn't give her at birth: Yasmeen. But that other name, that other girl, might just be more real than Nima knows. And more hungry. And the life Nima has, the one she keeps wishing were someone else's. . .she might have to fight for it with a fierceness she never knew she had. "Nothing short of magic...One of the best writers of our times."-- Elizabeth Acevedo, New York Times Bestselling author of The Poet X

I've found myself drawn more and more to novels in verse of late. Safia Elhillo's words drew me in instantly, and upon completion, I promptly looked her up on Instagram. Found this interview, and I had to share:

Got this back today. Thank you all for sharing pieces of your own stories with me in the margins. I truly enjoyed reading everyone‘s notes! ❤️#lmpbc @WanderingBookaneer @phantomx @SamAnne

WanderingBookaneer I never received the Lorca book. 2y
TheBookKeepers Oh no @WanderingBookaneer @SamAnne are you still reading it? 2y
TheBookKeepers Looking at Sam‘s page she‘s been inactive for 3 weeks and the latest posts have other inquiries regarding sign ups etc. I wonder if something happened and she‘s okay? Maybe we should try shooting an email to her or even mail a note? Sam was in the last round and always followed through so makes me think something could be up. @WanderingBookaneer @phantomx 2y

I loved this story in verse. Each entry was so beautiful, it made me cry--it reminded me of the many things my family and I have experienced, what we learned about each other, and understanding what home means to each of us. The annotations for #groupU felt personal and supportive. Coco thank you so much for sharing this book @TheBookKeepers @WanderingBookaneer @SamAnne #poetry #lmpbc

TheBookKeepers I‘m so glad you loved it ❤️❤️ I‘m excited to read everyone‘s notes 3y

Read and annotated yesterday, and then I got to a point of the book where I started crying, and couldn't stop crying all day. I've had a book do that to me in a long time, and the annotations adds more to the book 😭 #poetry #lmpbc #groupU @TheBookKeepers @WanderingBookaneer @SamAnne

Really enjoyed with collection of poems put into a narrative about a Sudanese Muslim immigrant‘s struggle with her indentity, what makes “home,” her family history, and facing discrimination growing up in the U.S. post 9/11. The magic realism worked in some ways for me and not others, but an overall pick for me. Makes me want to read Poet X next. #LMPBC @TheBookKeepers @WanderingBookaneer @phantomx

I‘m absolutely loving this book @TheBookKeepers ! Fantastic. I appreciate the poetry books you choose for #LMPBC. Hope to do another round with you! @WanderingBookaneer @phantomx Powerful imagery and storytelling. Although this afternoon I‘m being interrupted by my border collie and Bad Ass Billy Bird, the contrary polish hen. She thinks I have mealworm treats. Will be sending this along this week to next in line.

SamAnne She was named after Billy Idol, as she had a blond flat top as a youngster…. 3y
Tamra That hen is a riot! 😄 3y
GondorGirl I love that chicken so much! 😮😍 3y

#2021Book51
Told through poetic vignettes, this book follows the journey of a young immigrant girl who longs for the homeland she never really knew. The writing is beautiful and the characters all struggle with their pain in unique ways. This is a fairly quick read, but I took my time with it so I could really appreciate the way Elhillo writes.

This book is written in verse and very well done. I love reading about other cultures and their experiences, so this was right up my alley.

Evocative novel in verse. Nima, a Muslim American teenager, feels like an outsider, unsure of her self and purpose. Vivid language depicts Nima‘s feelings and culture, rich in emotion. Elements of magical realism thread metaphorically to help Nima see her life for what it truly is; full of love and promise. For fans of E. Acevedo (author names her as the book‘s godmother) Book 12 #YApril #poetrymatters

This is beautiful. Novels written in verse may be one of my newish favorite things. This is about a girl struggling with identity in her "new" country despite never having been to her "home" country. It's good.
