The Poet | Michael Connelly
The apparent suicide of his policeman brother sets Denver crime reporter Jack McEvoy on edge. Surprise at the circumstances of his brother's death prompts Jack to look into a whole series of police suicides, and puts him on the trail of a cop killer whose victims are selected all too carefully. Not only that, but they all leave suicide notes drawn from the poems of writer Edgar Allan Poe in their wake. More frightening still, the killer appears to know that Jack is getting nearer and nearer. An investigation that looks like the story of a lifetime might also be Jack's ticket to a lonely end.

#JoyousJanuary #BookSpinBingo #SeriesLove2024 #ReadAway2024 #Saturday13thJanuarythruSunday21stJanuary
Denver crime-beat reporter Jack McEvoy specializes in violent death. So when his homicide detective brother kills himself, McEvoy copes in the only way he knows how--he decides to write the story. But his research leads him to suspect a serial killer is at work--a devious murderer who's killing cops and leaving a trail of poetic clues.

EadieB It's the news story of a lifetime, if he can get the story without losing his life. The story moved a little slow in places and I had to extra focus on what the author was trying to convey and the length of the book. A few things lead to my guessing of the identity early on. I did not force the thread left dangling in the ending which I believe will be fodder for future books. I'm now looking forward to reading more Connolly in the near future. 3mo

Started my second book for #ChunksterChallenge2024. This one is only in the almost a chunkster category at 515 pages. That said it‘s quite small print and a lot of words on each page so feels much bigger than a 500+ page book. @Amiable

This is the first Jack McEvoy book, and the fifth book in the #BoschUniverseSeries. #SeriesLove2024 @TheSpineView

It‘s also off my bookshelves.

#JumpStart2024 @LizPixie
#ReadAway2024 @DieAReader @Ghabi4Roses

AnnCrystal Is that something new?? My newest read has tiny print too...terribly small (edited) 3mo
DieAReader @Andrew65 Where does this fit in the Bosch series overall? I haven‘t started it yet but definitely want to at some point in 2024 3mo
TheSpineView Well done!🤩 3mo

Amiable Do you have a mass market paperback? You can use the hardcover edition page total to count towards the challenge. I usually default to the hardcover page count no matter what format I‘m reading because it is the “original” (in my head, that is. 😀) 3mo
Andrew65 @AnnCrystal I thought most new books were getting bigger print, but this is an older book. I often read up to sixty pages an hour but on this one I am barely managing 40 pages an hour. 3mo
Andrew65 @DieAReader In the Universe Series it comes between book 4 and 5 in the original Bosch Series. I am reading all the books in Universe Series order.

3mo
AnnCrystal @Andrew65 Wow, that's excellent even at 40 pages an hour.

True. It takes me longer to get through a page with small print. I will have to pay attention when purchasing, and I hope there are not many of these already in my Library.

I do hope new books keep to the larger print.
3mo
Andrew65 @AnnCrystal I spoke to soon, now under 40 pages an hour 🤣 Definitely need larger fonts for the eyes too! 3mo
AnnCrystal @Andrew65 ☺️ that's still way more than I can manage 👍. I'm going to get out my craft magnifier !! 🧐☺️. (edited) 3mo
DieAReader @Andrew65 Fantastic! Thanks hun🤗❤️‍🔥 3mo
Andrew65 @AnnCrystal Sounds a good plan. My wife is a much slower reader than me. When we did an exercise at school with staff looking at the speed we all read at, it is amazing the different speeds people read at. Quite the range. I know @Tove_Reads is a much faster reader than me from a previous conversation we had. (edited) 3mo
AnnCrystal @Andrew65 now that's interesting. I've always been a sluggish reader... oddly, unless the story completely captures me and demands otherwise 😂. When I was a teenager, I use to gobble up Amelia Atwater-Rhodes new books in 24 hours. Then again, to compare, around the same time, it took me about a week or two to read a new installment of the Sweep Series... (edited) 3mo
AnnCrystal P.S. Is your wife a Litten? If she is, I will follow her here on Litsy. 3mo

This one was a little too twisty and too slow for my taste. The characters rely a little too much on cliche to be very interesting. It is interesting, though, to read back to how things were in the 90s when cellphones weren't ubiquitous and internet was dial-up. Looking back it's almost funny how the characters are like, "Wow, people can use the internet to network and share pictures?"

ImperfectCJ Side note: This was an especially strange one to read while waiting for news about the sentencing of our former neighbor who turned out to have used the internet for similar things in the fairly recent past. Not murder, but the other stuff. I didn't like being inside the one character's head. 2y

Good crime thriller. Though not overly keen on the actual topic of the crime. Will definitely try another of his books though when I‘m in need of a page turner.

I've decided to read Connelly's books in the "Bosch Universe" order instead of strictly the Bosch series. This is the first book featuring Jack McEvoy, a crime beat reporter whose twin brother has died from an apparent suicide. Convinced there's more to the story, Jack uncovers a serial killer using Poe calling cards disguised as suicide notes.

Have I mentioned that I'm now a proud, card carrying member of the Michael Connelly fan club?!

Twainy 😆 I looked down & I‘m wearing a Bosch quote on a black t-shirt ... “EVERYONE COUNTS OR NOBODY COUNTS”. 👍🏼 3y
Bookzombie This was the first Connelly book I read. I loved it and passed it on to my dad. He thought it was too dark, lol. Then I read the next Jack McEvoy book. I also read all but two of the Mickey Haller books and then decided to read in Universe order. I‘m not as far as you though, because I read them sporadically. 3y

This book is described as a “masterclass in thriller writing” ..and it is. It‘s 25 years since it was first published but it didn‘t seem dated. One of those books you can‘t put down📚
I will definitely be reading more Michael Connelly. Great holiday reading😊✅

Bk1 of my #MarchUnshelfing #readathon & #challenge is done! I very much enjoyed this story, just like I do most of Connollys work. The 1st in his Jack McEvoy series, it moves from Colorado to Chicago before finishing in L.A, where most of his books are set. Jack, a reporter at a Denver paper, becomes involved in a serial killer case when his twin brother, a cop, apparently commits suicide. Questioning the COD, he breaks open The Poet‘s case.

Kicking off my #MarchUnshelfing #readathon & challenge with a book that‘s been on my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom for quite a few years. This is one of the few Connolly books I haven‘t read yet, it‘s not a Bosch so it kinda kept sliding down my list. I love this author, he writes about L.A with such love its vividly brought to life in my imagination, though this one is one of the few set elsewhere I believe. Looking forward to diving in🏊‍♀️

CourtSmall This book is an awesome standalone! You wont regret reading it! 4y

Connelly abandons Bosch for this one, but it's still pretty good. Our hero is a middling successful crime reporter who at the start of the novel learns that his cop twin brother has eaten his gun. But something doesn't sit right with Jack and soon he's hot on the trail of a pedophile cop-killer. This was first published in 1996 and the references to digital cameras and dial-up modems that take 5 minutes to download a photo only add to its charm.

LeslieO This is still my favorite. 4y
Bookzombie @LeslieO Me too! I also read The Scarecrow after, but need to get to the rest of the series. 4y

#BookMail Pt12 Another bargain from Booktopia‘s EOFYS sale. Though I didn‘t realise it was one of those tiny trade paperbacks that fit in a handbag! It‘s about an inch smaller all round than all my other Connolly paperbacks. I used to have all of his books but a lot have “disappeared” over the years. This is one of his earlier novels, it‘s not a Bosch but set in the same universe. A reporter becomes the target of a serial killer in LA.

#getmovin #adrenaline

Lately I‘ve avoided #adrenaline in my reading - needing my reading time to be a calm oasis in my day - but back in the 90s I loved this novel. Bought it as a gift for lots of people who loved it too. I think I‘m ready to dip back into modern detective novels again, but thrillers not so much. I figure my mountainous and tottering TBR is already dangerous enough! #crushedbybooks

A very in-depth and all-engaging read, which moves along in a very addictive manner. It was written in 1996 so has a bit of a dated feel, prior to all modern day technologies. I enjoyed this book a lot, but didn‘t work out who the Poet was. If you enjoy good serial killer books I thoroughly recommend it. Now back onto the Bosch Series with Trunk Music.

I bought this book mistakenly thinking it was a new novel. So imagine my surprise when no one has a mobile phone, people are still using pay phones, there‘s only dial up modems and digital cameras are rare/unusual . Apart from that a well paced twist filled thriller. Thought I had it solved. I was wrong.
