Litsians - this is one of those books we will be chatting about because it‘s unusual, weird, freaky and it brings up a whooooole bunch of current events/issues/talking points. Don‘t read MUCH about it but I hope you‘ll check out my whole review and share your opinions! ScrappyMags.com

BookishTrish I read an ARC and I‘m curious if the ending changed in the final edit. How did it end? 7mo
ScrappyMags @bookishTrish this was the ARC so karma came around full circle on Tim 7mo
Kappadeemom I just finished and have questions. I don‘t understand the ending at all. Half the time I couldn‘t figure out if the character was AI or Abbie and at the end was there a fake Tim or did I blink? I‘m confused. 5mo
ScrappyMags @Kappadeemom exactly... the whole time the person “helping her” was an AI Tim that wanted to get rid of Tim to take him! Sorry I haven‘t been on here! Lol 5mo

Scrappymags 3-word review: Continuing bad-ass saga

Ballard is being revealed like an onion - layer after layer except what I‘m finding I‘m loving (bleck to onions). There‘s a story there - something hidden but her tough nature is enticing. I absolutely adore having a powerful female lead! Paired with Bosch? I‘m sold.

This 📚 took me to so many places and thru so many emotions. The hype is right. A prompt reminder of a history shared by many African-Americans today. A history of the barbaric nature of slavery and how the effects have prevailed in many ways. It‘s short and simple but in all the best ways good storytelling is done. 💗

I might be the only person underwhelmed by this book and though it was just okay. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5 for me. Mostly I just wasn't hooked into the book, didn't feel a sense of being drawn-in but rather a critical outsider. http://scrappymags.com/2017/09/21/book-review-sing-unburied-sing-by-jesmyn-ward/

Ashley_Nicoletto I haven't read it yet, but I feel like this often when something is so incredibly hyped up. I'll be curious to see if I like it. 2y

shawnmooney Interesting – I felt that way about her previous novel, and bailed. I was hoping I might feel more for this one. I will have to give it a shot! 2y
bookloo “Critical outsider”— What a perfect way to describe how I also felt about the book. 2y
ScrappyMags @Ashley_Nicoletto @emilyhaldi the hype!! Yes, sometimes I think it ruins expectation. For me I believe I just couldn't put myself into a place of empathy. I couldn't feel a sense of the big journey/trials etc because I kept questioning why the journey needed to happen. Let me know tho... ppl love this book so I'm the minority 2y
ScrappyMags @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks it happens to me all the time!! A book other love I don't or vice versa. So much goes into love of a book... 2y
ScrappyMags @bookloo thank you!! I had a hard time just accepting WHY the journey happened. They talk about an Odyssey-type journey but I didn't feel that. 2y
ScrappyMags @shawnmooney definitely do and def let me know. I'm forever fascinated in why I love books others don't or dislike the ones others love. 2y
britt_brooke I'm already feeling this way and I'm only 20% in. So many people are gushing over it and I'm over here like 🤷🏼‍♀️. 2y
Spiderfelt Still trying to chew on this book a little to digest. Reading other people's comments, questions and criticisms helps me process. The end left me wondering about Leonie's childhood and her early relationship with her parents. As this is a work of fiction, as opposed to a case history, there isn't much value in wondering how an adult character ends up so utterly incapable of feeling empathy for others, in particular for her own offspring. 2y
Spiderfelt And yet, I can't help but wonder. 2y
ScrappyMags @britt_brooke we often agree on books so I‘ll be curious to see. I think it‘s a beautiful book but it didn‘t touch me in the way it has others... I find that fascinating as always. 2y
ScrappyMags @Spiderfelt well put! For me, I lacked the connection to the book for some reason. Well written but I wasn‘t into it. I‘m always intrigued by that. I think much has to do with personal experiences, where you are in life, etc 2y
ScrappyMags @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks glad I‘m not alone!! 2y
britt_brooke @ScrappyMags I finished it. It really didn't work for me at all. 2y
ScrappyMags @britt_brooke ok somehow weirdly glad it wasn‘t just me because this book is getting crazy book nominations. When I look at this and The Heart‘s Invisible Furies it‘s not even a competition. Did u read that one? 2y
britt_brooke @ScrappyMags And we're not alone (thankfully), @Reviewsbylola and @emilyhaldi weren't fans of this one either. 2y
britt_brooke @ScrappyMags I haven't decided if I want to read The Heart's Invisible Furies yet. 2y
Reviewsbylola Lol at the meme! I gave it three stars as well. The first half really drew me in, but I felt the author really went astray in the second half and she lost me completely. Such a shame. 2y
Reviewsbylola And I absolutely agree, hands down NO competition between this and The Heart's Invisible Furies. 2y
ScrappyMags @britt_brooke my fave of the year... in my top 10 of all time. I didn‘t have any expectation going in though and it was nothing like what I thought. 2y
ScrappyMags @Reviewsbylola Exactly... I was reading and feeling sad and having a bit of that “book connection” and then ...pfffft. Right on! 2y
britt_brooke @ScrappyMags Sounds like I need to add it to my TBR! 👍🏻 (edited) 2y
Reviewsbylola You absolutely should read it!! @britt_brooke 2y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola @ScrappyMags Two very reputable endorsements - must be good! It's on the TBR now. 😁 2y

Lady Midnight | Cassandra Clare
post image

QUESTION: If you are over 40... okay maybe 30... did u like this book? Would I? Some info - I get annoyed with teen love trilogies and damsels in distress. Appreciate creativity tho. I'm really putting thought into this $4 purchase 😂 😂 Girl's gotta budget.

cariashley Hard to say of you haven't read/liked Clare's other books. There's definitely no damsel in distress here, the protagonist is tougher than all the male characters. Personally I'd recommend starting with Clare's Infernal Devices series though: 3y
DGRachel I'm over 40 (42 to be exact) and I've read the first three of Clare's Mortal Instruments, the first Infernal Devices, and the spin-off Bane Chronicles. As @cariashley said, if you've read Clare's other books, you'll probably enjoy this one. I find her books and characters annoying, but I own box sets of the series for some ungodly reason, so I'm slowly hate-reading my way through them. (edited) 3y
ScrappyMags @cariashley @DGRachel thanks guys! Okay I gave 2 and 3 ⭐️ s to the first 5 or so Mortal Ins books. Stopped there because the plot fizzled and the romance annoyed me. Clockwork Angel I LOVED and then hated the second 2 books... sigh... it'll probably be mildly interesting for me lol... 3y

The Golden House | Salman Rushdie
post image
Bailedbailed

Ugh I MIGHT pick this back up. First Rushdie book so no expectations but I felt like there wasn't a story and too many references that needed footnotes (am I the only one who doesn't understand a reference to a "Baba Yaga"???) or maybe so many of these distracted me from any focus on the story. At 25% I just wasn't feeling it and bailed...

Leniverse Baba Yaga? Russian, or Slavic, folktale witch who lived in a house on chicken legs. Would sometimes help travellers, but also reputed to eat children. She shows up a fair amount in various popular culture, so I'm not surprised she's mentioned without explanation. 3y
JenP I love Rushdie but his books are certainly jam packed with folklore, mythology, and religious references. I often find myself having to look up various references in order to understand his books. I have heard of Baba Yaga and recently read a children's book where she is referenced but I am blanking on the name of the book. 3y
Smangela I was only familiar with Baba Yaga because of @Liberty and her recommendation of this: 3y
See All 8 Comments
Liberty OHHHHHH. I have this but I hadn't read the description. I have a Baba Yaga tattoo! Will have to check it out. 😝 3y
ScrappyMags @JenP that's it! Yes I certainly get MOST of them but I felt like I needed to look up too much... other book titles or movies I've never heard of... etc. It's why I'm torn. I love a challenge but... I also need to be entertained. 3y
ScrappyMags @Smangela @JenP @Leniverse I would say it's probably not "general" college knowledge lol... unless you took folklore. Just an example... but yes so many of these, movie/book titles I've never heard of, etc... I'm challenged but not "entertained" enough by the book... and now I want to read about this chicken witch ? 3y
ScrappyMags @Liberty ok now that's cool. Could be I grew up in a Lutheran/German environment and not too many Russian heritage folks here.. if you're in Twitter or Instagram I'm @scrappymags there too! Love to see it! 3y
Liberty @ScrappyMags I only have it because I'm a huge Hellboy fan, and Baba Yaga is part of his origin story. 😂 3y

This isn't ONE of my faves of 2017... it's my #1. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Amazing. Laughter... tears... emotions I didn't know I had. So many feels I can't handle them. Sweeping epic but don't let the length scare you. The book flies by!! All the details on the blog but trust me... READ IT. http://scrappymags.com/2017/08/15/best-of-2017-the-hearts-invisible-furies-by-jo...

ScrappyMags @Lindy @alfoster @l_auren yes yes yes!! Do let me know!! I'm always curious and never offended if ppl disagree on books. It's not what I expected but so much more! 3y
Mdargusch I agree. So glad I plunged in. 3y
ScrappyMags @Mdargusch sry I'm late posting back but I can't get this book out of my head! I would so love to have read this in a book club! 2y
Mdargusch I was lucky because this is the book that our family book club chose this month. So far, out of the ones that have finished the book, we have all given it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That never happens except the time we read a Gone a With The Wind. 😊 2y
ScrappyMags @Mdargusch it is epic! 💗💗 2y

I was completely ignorant of the patent battle over light bulbs and this could-be-true historical fiction tale not only educated me but entertained me with wonderful drawn-to-life historical figures (Edison? Kind of a jerk!) and captivating storytelling. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ for me! More on the blog... http://scrappymags.com/2017/08/09/book-review-the-last-days-of-night-by-graham-m...

ScrappyMags @BarbaraTheBibliophage wasn't it awesome? It was gifted to me on NetGalley by the publisher! I thought that was so nice... I'm on a historical fiction jaunt here. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage That's how I read it also! I lurve historical fiction, and try to find the best stuff on NetGalley. We read alike, don't we? 😘 3y

This book made me happy to be single!! Definitely a nice piece of psychological mystery here. The premise is good - would you join a group of like-minded people whose sole purpose is to keep marriages together? Hmm...sounds good. Until it isn't. 4/5 stars! (Worth a read) The rest is on the blog ..http://scrappymags.com/2017/07/23/book-review-the-marriage-pact-by-michelle-richmond/

So I'm wondering... do you read the same books multiple times or do you read them once and never again? I'm a read em' once type with the exception of Are You There God... and that because it cemented my lifelong love of reading. And I have to read books I teach many times but just generally - what's your reading 📖 MO?

BarbaraTheBibliophage I'm a one-time reader. Then I give them away. There are so many books to get to! 3y
Sace I've only read GWTW and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn multiple times. Generally I read 'em and leave 'em. 3y
ScrappyMags @Sace @BarbaraTheBibliophage ooooh does that make us book sluts?? 😂😂😂 I kinda like that in a bad-ass sorta way lol!! 👍🏼👍🏼😂😂😋😋 3y
See All 28 Comments
TrishB Generally once. I have read a few books twice but not many. 3y
rubyslippersreads I'm a re-reader—GWTW, Emily of New Moon, Jane Austen, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, the Betsy-Tacy series—to name a few. 3y
AnnieReads I rarely reread. 3y
8little_paws I reread more these days. I stated reading this book once a year. 3y
jfalkens I reread all the time, I'm trying to work on my mountainous TBR tho 3y
Sace @ScrappyMags oooo. I love that "book slut." 3y
Lizpixie I reread if I'm in a slump and can't settle on a new book, reading an old favourite works every time. 3y
8little_paws I would like to revisit some favorites from when I was younger as well. Lucy Maud Montgomery, little house on the Prairie etc 3y
Aseleener Like you, I am not a re-reader. There are just too many books I want to read! I honestly think the only book I've re-read in my entire adult life is the Bible. 3y
Sassy_Steph I go back to some of my old standards sometimes, either just for comfort or to wait out a reading slump until the next big thing comes along!! 3y
bookwrm526 It depends on the book!! 3y
AbstractMonica I really never read a book again. I'm always afraid a book will not be as good as i remember it to be, and I'd hate for that to happen. 3y
gossamerchild I reread a lot. Childhood books, romance (sometimes I need a familiar, comfortable happy ending), classics, Phryne Fisher 😉. 3y
LauraBrook I go in rereading streaks, nearly always old favorites, and occasionally one from a series before the new one comes out. That's pretty rare though. When I was a teen I reread a lot, but now that I'm an adult with a floor-joist-straining book "problem" there are too many new things to read. 3y
LibrarianJen I reread certain books almost yearly while others I never reread. I guess it really depends on the book or my mood. Usually if I am having trouble getting into a current was I find myself rereading something I know I enjoy. 3y
ScrappyMags @Sace lol it's just so appropriate!! I guess the rereaders are more monogomous? Lol! 3y
ScrappyMags Thanks ev1 for commenting!! I was so curious! 3y
Nuwanda There are a handful I re-read--just top favorites or childhood favorites where I want to see if they hold up. Most are one and done. 3y
Reviewsbylola Just once except in very rare circumstances. As a child even up through my teenage years though I was an avid rereader. It was nothing for me to read a favorite book over and over again. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Hahaha! I'm definitely a book slut. I'll do anything for a book. Well, almost. 😁 3y
AmyG I have rarely read a book twice. I tend to be one and done. 3y
L_auren Never ever re-read!! Only if I ever run out of books (never) (edited) 3y
ScrappyMags @BarbaraTheBibliophage I was gonna say... anything?? Lol!!! 😂😂😂😂 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Weeeeeelllll. Alllmost. 🤣🤣 3y
ScrappyMags @BarbaraTheBibliophage I dunno... my line is pretty gray. Not Fifty Shades Grey. But gray. Lol!!! 😂😂😂😂 3y

The Breakdown | B A Paris

Pickpick

As someone who HAS panic attacks and anxiety - the description is accurate. The storyline is genius yet turns predictable BUT for the first time I really didn't care with a story this good. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5 for me http://scrappymags.com/2017/07/18/book-review-the-breakdown-by-b-a-paris-out-tod...

LibrarianJen Ooh sounds interesting! I too have anxiety and panic attacks. 3y
ScrappyMags You would definitely relate I think.. that feeling like your brain KNOWS something is irrational but you're powerless to change the anxiety response...😬😬 3y
Jerdencon Just finished this yesterday... I figured it out early on but it didn't ruin the book. Thought it was really good too! 3y
