Wicked Deep
Wicked Deep | Shea Ernshaw
Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic meets the Salem Witch trials in this haunting story about three sisters on a quest for revenge--and how love may be the only thing powerful enough to stop them. Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrow... Where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town. Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under. Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters' return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into. Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters. But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo, or save herself.

In a cursed small town, teenage girls are possessed and teenage boys are lured to fullfil a promised revenge each Summertime.

A trio of sisters drowned as witches come back every summer to take revenge on the town that killed them by drowning teenaged boys. This had so many plot holes and problems that it became absolutely ridiculous. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2022/11/review-wicked-deep-by-shea-ernshaw.html?...

4✨There is an annual festival for the three “witches” who were drowned. Now every year the sisters kill three boys in revenge by possessing the girls of this town. I liked the story, but because of the dynamic of this story it was basically 2 characters in one, which tended to be difficult to follow. Finished before the new year.

I just cracked this one open and by page 14, I have a couple of issues already. ::sigh:: It‘s the book club book for Wednesday though so I‘ll have to just crack on and hope I don‘t continue to have issues.

Pigpen_Reads I just started this one yesterday. I'm hoping it's as good as all the hype said it was was. 1y
Kylivi I‘m interested to see what you think. This one gave me Hocus Pocus vibes. 1y
BookNAround @Kylivi I didn‘t love it and my book club last night discussed all the plot holes and inconsistencies. People online seem to love it though so I‘m happy to send it to you if you want it. 1y

Well, that was quick...but I just couldn't put it down! I happened upon this book at the library, and had to get it cause it was so beautiful (with the stars and moons I'm obsessed with). When I started it, I was freaking cause I share a birthday with the Swan sisters! Lol It is dark and beautiful which is exactly how I like it! I give it 5/5✨

I really enjoyed this! It was not even on my radar, except that it fit a monthly challenge. Primarily the story was set in current day with Penny and Bo, but there were flashbacks to tell the Swan sisters story, as well.

Dark eerie atmosphere, lots of mystery. World building+descriptions were well written+poetic. Like Penny+her down to earth attitude+ her secret (Can't say because of spoilers!)The romance was so good+Bo was super dreamy. Loved the tragic love story with one of the sisters. The book reminded me of Hocus Pocus+Jennifer's Body. Love the snippets of history about Sparrow. Loved the huge plot twists but did predict most. The ending was so fitting.

GondorGirl I really enjoyed this one, though not quite as much a Winterwood. She does an amazing job of making the location a character in her books! 3y

Christie! @TheLudicReader I am sending you a letter but forgot to explain casewrap! Casewrap binding is a style of hardcover where paper or cloth is printed and then wrapped onto the cases that make up the hardcover itself. They are glued on, unlike a dust jacket. Usually it has a design and can include the information a dustjacket does without the need for a dustjacket. Ernshaw‘s book has a hidden casewrap beneath the dustjacket. 🙂 #litsylove

This was the perfect read for a cold, rainy, peaceful Memorial Day weekend at the shore.

I just adore Shea Ernshaw's writing--atmosphereic, poetic, and revealing only just enough. I can look past the insta-love and other tropes, because the Ernshaw's writing alone is enough to drag me in. This is what I like to see in my YA!

Not quite 5 stars like Winterwood, but a solid 4.5 for me ⭐

Finished this book today. While I felt the story was a bit predictable, I did love the atmosphere. Two centuries ago, three sisters were killed by drowning, thought to be witches. Then every summer since, they come back, taking over the bodies of three girls and the boys of the town of Sparrow are not safe. This year, a boy named Bo comes to town and Penny feels a need to keep him safe. But they are both keeping secrets.

I absolutely loved the atmosphere of this book. It had a very Salem-like, haunting vibe, mixed with something more modern but still believable. It felt like Twilight mixed with The Craft/Practical Magic (I know they are movies). I liked the descriptive elements - the writer at times had a poetic approach that allowed a chilling, Halloween like atmosphere to permeate the book - in a reassuringly traditional way. A great winter fireside book.

Oh man... what can I say about this book except that I hated EVERY SINGLE PAGE. Like seriously this was the most underwhelming predictable cliché ridden book I might have ever ever read and there is not a single likable character for me.

I use to see nothing but good things about this book and I'm like did I read the wrong book or.... the only reason I didn't DNF it is I was reading it for a readathon and as a buddy read.

I‘ve not been thrown by a twist in a while, so that really pleased me in this book. She got me! What a cool story about witches—it felt new, fresh, intriguing. I really liked her characters and the way the magic worked. The plot was perfect. I loved the writing. The atmosphere was everything I could have wanted in a witchy book by the sea. The logic was strong. All-in-all, an enjoyable witch book perfect for a stormy night.

I don't know where to start with this.

On the one hand, I loved the story of the Swan sisters - 3 siblings who come back every summer using the young girls from the town through the means of a curse to do so, was a great way to create characters, tone, and setting and amp up the world building and keep me intrigued.

On the other hand, I didn't care for the romance once it was presented. I just felt that it was forced 🤷‍♀️
