French Exit: A Novel | Patrick DeWitt
107 posts | 87 read | 2 reading | 116 to read
From bestselling author Patrick deWitt, a brilliant and darkly comic novel about a wealthy widow and her adult son who flee New York for Paris in the wake of scandal and financial disintegration Frances Price tart widow, possessive mother, and Upper East Side force of nature is in dire straits, beset by scandal and impending bankruptcy. Her adult son Malcolm is no help, mired in a permanent state of arrested development. And then theres the Prices aging cat, Small Frank, who Frances believes houses the spirit of her late husband, an infamously immoral litigator and world-class cad whose gruesome tabloid death rendered Frances and Malcolm social outcasts. Putting penury and pariahdom behind them, the family decides to cut their losses and head for the exit. One ocean voyage later, the curious trio land in their beloved Paris, the City of Light serving as a backdrop not for love or romance, but self destruction and economical ruin to riotous effect. A number of singular characters serve to round out the cast: a bashful private investigator, an aimless psychic proposing a seance, a doctor who makes house calls with his wine merchant in tow, and the inimitable Mme. Reynard, aggressive houseguest and dementedly friendly American expat. Brimming with pathos and wit, French Exit is a one-of-a-kind 'tragedy of manners,' a riotous send-up of high society, as well as a moving mother/son caper which only Patrick deWitt could conceive and execute

This was, as promised, dark and (occasionally funny). More so, it was/the characters were sad and pathetic. I'm not horribly sorry I read it, but I won't be rereading or recommending it.

BookNAround That‘s disappointing to hear. I have this one on my tbr and really liked The Sisters Brothers so had high hopes for this too. 4w
JoyBlue @BookNAround It's not long. I wouldn't discourage you from reading it. I'd be interested to hear whether it lives up to your expectations. I haven't read any of his other work (as far as I remember). 4w

I‘d never read Dewitt before, but loved his ability to let his satire and wit just sit there and not over explore it. This one takes some interesting turns. Reminds me of Wodehouse, but modern and with more explicit sex.

This was a twisted delight! Love DeWitt's brand of subtle but oh so dark humour in this "tragedy of manners. He can write characters so dislikeable & weird with a mastery that is a joy to behold. The acid tongued and horribly overbearing mother, Frances, is such an example - her behaviour & attitude are so awful yet this makes her fleeting moments of vulnerability & humanity all the more poignant. Trigger information in comments.

readingjedi There is a suicide scene that is graphic & unmitigated but is not sensationalized or gratuitous. 4mo

An odd, dark book about a deeply dysfunctional family. Probably a little better than “so-so” to be fair. Very funny in places and eminently readable.

A lovely morsel of a book! Even the story has moments of tragedy, it made me laugh. The characters are pretentious, self-involved, and completely unconcerned about lives other than their own, which is the source of much of the humour in the book. A great depiction of a highly dysfunctional mother/son relationship!

#WanderingJune Buried in my kindle is this tagged book which I haven‘t read yet, but the premise struck me as a fit for today‘s prompt. Having become an Upper East Side social leper, Frances Price, her adult son and their aging cat slink out of NYC with plans to reinvent themselves and get #LostInFrance 🗼🗺 I‘m told this book has dark humor and major snark. I purchased as a #KindleDailyDeal so I‘m sure it‘ll be worth my$1.99 😛

Thoroughly enjoyable. DeWitt‘s way with dialog is dazzling, his humor as bone-dry as always. But there‘s an understanding of human foibles that makes this more than just a smart, snarky book. There‘s real warmth here, too. Loved it.

This novel lampooning the ultra rich is loaded with bon mots and absurd caricatures, making it an entertaining read. Ultimately, however, I found it unsatisfying and can‘t think of anyone to whom I‘d recommend it.

I had high hopes for this book after reading the first couple of chapters about a family of quirky high society New Yorkers. The writing is lovely and witty. By the midpoint, though, the story just turned into a mess. Half-developed characters showed up for no reason and the ending left me flat.

A mother & her adult son 'French Exit' NYC and move to Paris. What follows is a series of absurd scenes of their life and adventures. Eccentric characters & bizarre circumstances creates a darkly comic, unsettling novel - which skates on the surface of pain, dysfunction, loneliness and broken relationships. There are some fabulously created scenes and very witty one liners - but I need to deep dive with my characters and that's not deWitt's style.

A rich widow, her son and their cat flee New York for Paris, post a scandal & financial turmoil. Encompassing quirky characters, this dark comic is grief-stricken & yet full of humour, & plain WEIRD. There isn't much to the story, but i loved the prose, very engaging. The language is smooth & easy to follow, and the writer has made the point in just the right amount of pages. Pick, pick, pick!

I loved this and raced through it. Frances is a formidable woman. Malcolm her son is passive but I loved their eccentricities. The writing is lucid & diamond-sharp - so funny re high society - every observation is spot-on. An elegant, polished novel. It‘s a light read but there‘s much to think about re a life that‘s empty & lacking purpose. The scene where Frances speaks w her husband is wonderful comedy, & poignant too. Great beach read.
