Pickpick

In the books, the characters find themselves in various situations, going through trials for which neither their spirit, nor their mind, nor their body have been prepared. We are also not insured against any whims of Fate. In To find her place, three broken characters go through their own Hell, undergo changes and change themselves. Until they reach the place created for them. A book that tightened my throat to the last.

My reading time is very valuable and I still don't have enough. But I steal minutes from where I can. It's difficult, because in some places this book just tells such truths that all I want is to be somewhere alone to hide my emotions. Magic realistic!

Detailed life of theatre showgirls. It‘s 1940 & after being kicked out of Vassar & her home, Vivian is shipped to her Aunt in NYC. She designs costumes for the & dancing & musical shows whose venue is a charming but crumbling theatre owned by her aunt. Her life of working, going to nightclubs elegantly dressed for a night of drinking, & partying with young men til the wee hours. Fun, but not much depth yet.

Pickpick

A journalist spends over a decade with Puerto Rican families in the Bronx. Shows how easy it is to slip in and out of poverty and how the system sets people up for failure. Many of the people live life on the edge, in and out of prison and the drug trade, but care deeply about their families and want to better their lives. She shows the complexity of the cycle of poverty and violence. #nonfiction #diversebooks #eveningread
