Other People's Houses
Other People's Houses | Abbi Waxman
"Abbi Waxman is both irreverent and thoughtful."--#1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Giffin And now the author of The Garden of Small Beginnings returns with a hilarious and poignant new novel about four families, their neighborhood carpool, and the affair that changes everything. At any given moment in other people's houses, you can find...repressed hopes and dreams...moments of unexpected joy...someone making love on the floor to a man who is most definitely not her husband... *record scratch* As the longtime local carpool mom, Frances Bloom is sometimes an unwilling witness to her neighbors' private lives. She knows her cousin is hiding her desire for another baby from her spouse, Bill Horton's wife is mysteriously missing, and now this... After the shock of seeing Anne Porter in all her extramarital glory, Frances vows to stay in her own lane. But that's a notion easier said than done when Anne's husband throws her out a couple of days later. The repercussions of the affair reverberate through the four carpool families--and Frances finds herself navigating a moral minefield that could make or break a marriage.

Abbi Waxman has become one of my favorite authors. She really nails dialogues - those between characters and, even funnier, the ones inside the characters minds.

The #24in48 has gone...NOT WELL. As in, this is the first time I‘ve been able to read this weekend and it‘s 9:30 on Sunday morning. But that‘s okay. While I‘m not going to end the weekend with a 24-hour timer, I will have ended it having gone to a local Cherry Festival, spent some time on the lake, and bought a new bed frame.

This book was good, not amazing. I really related to Frances on a lot of levels (though she is a much better mom than I am). But the other characters were just meh. It reminded me of Big Little Lies, a bit.. lots of domestic drama.

I don‘t actually read one star books because I usually just stop reading them. So of the ones I actually finished, Other People‘s Houses was a 2 star read for me. I went in with high expectations because I love this kind of book. But I just found the whole thing really cringey and poorly written.

Of my DNFs, Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero is the one I hated so much I could only get 50 pages in before tossing it.

tracy.m.ng The beginning dragged, but towards the end, (maybe I got used to reading about grocery shopping trips?) it got better-paces. I think if you view this as a beach read, then it‘s not so bad 8mo

Totally enjoyable! This book wasn‘t groundbreaking, but I like stories that are small in scope sometimes. This one focused exclusively on a small group of families in one suburban neighborhood. The parents and kids are all involved in each other‘s business. It‘s about the effects of one person‘s choice on everyone. It was humorous at times with a good amount of character development. I found the characters believable and fun to get to know. Pick!

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5/5 stars. This book was fine, not amazing, but fine. When Frances sees one of her neighbors cheating on her husband it shakes the neighborhood. While the story was OK, I loved Frances and seriously want to be friends with her.

I finished this in almost 1 sitting! Only because I had to leave work and couldn't continue until I got home. ? The main character's oldest daughter is 14 and a few of their moments were totally relatable. There were also some laugh out loud moments and the drama wasn't over the top, "that would never happen in real life" but drama that you could actually envision happening.

Taking a break from translating to share my simple review of this book.
It's as "white people problem" as it gets which annoys me a bit. However, it's really funny when it wants to and an easy read with interesting insights into parenting and long term relationships.

I picked this one up after seeing a few reviews on here and really ended up enjoying listening to it. I could hear myself in the main character, Francis, and some of the things she says about kids and parenting made me laugh out loud. I don't normally like the whole desperate housewives type drama but this tells more along the lines of normal people drama and things that be happening behind closed doors in any neighbourhood. #77of2018 #audio

At first it seemed boring and too many characters but as soon as it jumped off it stayed good. My only issue was two things: 1. Constantly calling one character fat the entire book! She was a whole 30 lbs overweight 🙄. 2. Having a horrible brat of a teenager run her mouth with no repercussions the whole time 🤬. I recommend skimming the Frances parts. Still it was a lot of fun like desperate housewives kinda, without the murder and nonsense.

mcipher I liked the bratty teenager! My son is worse. 😂 The fat thing, yeah. They did harp about it. 14mo
TofuandBooks I‘ve had other people‘s kids do it to me and boy oh boy that gets me! I grew up with a tough dad and there was no guff allowed lol so I just hear his voice all the dang time! 😁. And right? It‘s like she‘s not 600 pounds in a scooter back off! 🤦🏼‍♀️ 14mo
