The Garden of Small Beginnings
The Garden of Small Beginnings | Abbi Waxman
The place where friendship grows . . . One moment Lili is arguing with Dan, her husband, the next he is killed in a terrible car accident right outside their family home. Three years later and Lili has managed to resume her day-to-day life as a mother of two girls and a successful textbook illustrator. But despite her outward appearance, she feels an aching loss. However, when she is commissioned to illustrate a series of horticultural books, Lili is forced to take gardening class and the wilted roots of her life finally start to blossom. The class provides Lili with a new network of friends - friends with their own heartaches and problems - and, maybe, another chance at love . . .

I went a little extra with the fake plants, but I can't keep anything alive (ironic since this book is full of gardening tips). I don't know why, but something is stopping me from giving this book a "pick". It was cute, but a lot of the plot felt contrived. The protag, Lili, almost broke the 4th wall a couple times when she said things like, "How perfect that the situation worked out like this!" over and over. Other than that, it was charming.

I didn't fully realize that this book was going to be a about a widow when I grabbed it today, but ugh. 😭 I couldn't do life without my husband. This story is all about moving on in a healthy way, but I'd be like the girl in P.S. I Love You, except I'd never get out of bed.

On a lighter note, here's Winston. On the surface he looks very interested in what I'm doing, but I'm convinced there's a circus monkey in place of his brain. 🐒

I'm facilitating a senior research symposium today, which means that I get to sit at my desk and read books while students write speeches. This is why I still substitute on my days off from teaching college prep. I'm getting paid to take attendance, read books and drink Red Bull. 😋

Having recently and thoroughly enjoyed The Bookish Life of Nina Hill *and* having received lovely mail from the author, I didn't hesitate to read Waxman's debut. Who knew that a story about a grieving young widow and her family could be so funny?! I especially enjoyed Lillian's relationships with her sister and her gardening teacher, as well as the antics of her 7- and 5-year-old daughters . Highly recommend.

LauraBeth I loved this book! I still need to read Nina Hill. 2mo

This a lovely, sad, sweet story about moving forward in your life after unthinkable loss. Waxman has an amazing ability to inject humour into complex stories that in the hands of a less talented author would feel one dimensional. Great story!

This book did the trick of getting me out of my reading rut. Loved the characters, the snark and the depiction of motherhood. A bit disappointed by the ending because I wanted to hear more about each character‘s next steps. The narration was nicely done too!

Lovely and charming, I would categorize this one as women's fiction. Widowed, with two young girls, Lily is trying to navigate life without her husband. She comes to realize his death touched so many aspects of her life. Sounds like a sad book, but it's really very funny and at times uplifting. I liked the #audiobook
Also, practical gardening tips! 🥦🍅🥬🥕🌻

I didn‘t love Other People‘s Houses but I liked it enough that I figured I would use Abbi waxman for my #mmdchallenge 3 books by the same by the same author, and this book was immediately available on Libby while I was searching. I LOVED this. I laughed and cried, and some parts were even a little sexy! I found Lili‘s take on motherhood so relatable (and hilarious). Didn‘t want to stop listening to this one.

Argh! My son called to tell me track ended early today because of rain so I hopped in the car without my book to go collect him. I get to the school and find a “Nvmd, coach wants us to lift weights.” So now I‘m sitting at the school without my latest in progress book. Good thing I keep a spare book in the car so I‘m not entirely at the mercy of just my phone!

I really enjoyed this book. It was realistic enough to not annoy me but still had enough intrigue to not be boring. It was both funny in places but also sad and got me thinking. A more grown up “light read” although it annoyed me that a 34 year old was classed as middle aged!

Okay - this book is adorable. Great characters and dialogue that‘ll make you laugh. This works as a breezy palate cleanser, and it‘s the sort of book that Reese Witherspoon could (and should) develop into a chick flick that opens on Valentine‘s Day. This was a very cute read. The beginning was a bit slow and there were some minor underdeveloped plot points but overall, enjoyable. The kids were well characterized without being too bratty or too precocious and Lil's grief and sadness came through. I really liked the gardening pages in between chapters and bc of it, may have figured out why my cucumber leaves and plants begin to start withering once summer really hits.

The Garden of Small Beginnings is about loss and new beginnings. It about how life continues to offer you good things much like a garden. I liked how the garden theme was used throughout the book, particularly the How to Grow section in each chapter, which were very funny. I liked this book. It was written in a carefree voice that made it easy to pick up. Sometimes it was written so conversationally, I swear I've said those exact things! It was a little predictable and sometimes the sexual references were a little crude, which turned me off from liking Lili as much as I wanted to. It ended happily (maybe a little predictably) but it was good fun! Oh, and I love gardening so it was informative too! 💐🌸🥒

I adore books with an eclectic group of characters brought together to form amazing friendships. All flawed and wonderfully human, these characters will make you laugh, cry, whoop for joy and want to start a garden.
The story follows Lillian, a widow with two daughters, on her journey moving forward, remembering to live again, and finding balance between honoring the past and being in the now. It's beautifully written and a gem of a book. 4.5 ⭐️

I don't tend to seriously use this phrase a lot, but "what a charming book" somehow seems awfully fitting when describing Garden of Small Beginnings. This is one of those stories that has a little bit of everything- family, friendship, loss, and love. It's also, incidentally, pretty darn funny.- BTW this was meant to be a review and I hit blurb by accident. Oh well.
