I listened to The Mists of Avalon (pub 1983, narrated by the inimitable Davina Porter) a couple of years ago; while not my first foray into Arthurian lore, that was my first adult take. Listening to these now, I love the form that seems very much a product of its era — chapters as standalone stories which, strung together, create a larger story (Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, both books in the 1920s/films in the 60s). Are these considered YA? 🤔

This is listed as one book on the #1001books list, so I‘m reviewing it as such. Sometimes it‘s divided into 5 separate books, and if I had reviewed as such, the first 3 would have been rated higher. I enjoyed the beginning of the story, appreciated the middle, and was disappointed in the end. I also didn‘t feel that the separate books fit together well in style, although they were chronological. However, the #audiobook narration was great.

JazzFeathers This has been on my TBR for ages, since when l was l kid and was obsessed with Arthurian tales. Sorry to hear it could have been better fir you. But it's s classic, so l think l'll keep it in my pile 😊 2mo
Daisey @JazzFeathers I did really enjoy the earlier part of the story. This may be a little bit of my final review being effected by the end of the story more than the overall. It is definitely an interesting retelling of the Arthur story. 2mo

I‘m working my way through the audiobooks of The Once and Future King available on #Hoopla. It‘s a good way to spend my drive and walk each day, as the audio narration is fantastic. However, I‘m not quite sure what I think of the story as I‘m almost finished with book 3 of the 5 that make up the whole.

#BookMail Pt1 Might as well kick off this weeks mail now, I don‘t think anything is coming the rest of the week. This is, obviously, another of the Penguin Galaxy series. I now have the whole set which I can‘t wait to finish reading, plus they look gorgeous! This fantasy based on the King Arthur story is a classic from the years just after WWII, originally 3 short stories which have been pulled together into one novel. #MerlynFanClub

@Avanders I can not get over how GORGEOUS this copy of The Once And Future King is, it‘s by far my now most favorite book on my shelf. Also yay for having Circe finally!! I love the teas they smell wonderful, as does the candle and I love the name of it! The bookmarks are adorable and I‘m sure my daughter will “borrow” one to color. Everything is perfect and I love it all! A great start to my day! #mythsandlegendsswap

Avanders Oh I‘m so glad you like the version and that it arrived in good shape!! I was so worried 😅 I also feel a little silly now seeing the Easter stuff I sent... I forgot we were opening these packages after Easter 😳😬 But I hope you like them all the same. I also had planned to send you another something special ... and this reminds me to do it!! Hope you have a wonderful day ♥️♥️ 7mo
MeganAnn Great package!! That copy of the Once and Future King is lovely 😍🎉👏🏻⚡️ 7mo
Avanders You‘ll get the rest tomorrow!! Sorry for the delay.. my life has been so crazy lately! 😬😘😘😘 7mo
Sweetkokoro @Avanders I really love the copy of The Once and Future King you sent. I have never seen this version before and I am such a sucker for a beautiful cover, (it‘s sad but I have turned books away cuz the cover left me feeling empty, I love a great cover) oh another surprise, i will make sure to post when it gets here. @MeganAnn isn‘t it lovely, it‘s going to be a face out on the bookshelf. I can‘t hide something that lovely! (edited) 7mo

After listening to (and not loving) The Sword in the Stone, I kept going -- and read the rest of The Once and Future King including the Book of Merlyn, a (unnecessary) posthumous addition.
And much to my surprise, I LOVED it. White recounts tales of Arthurian lore but it's so much more as he considers how (hu)mans should live. (He wrote these pre/post Nazi Germany.) And the nature writing is amazing.
It was an enthralling, rich experience!

merelybookish The Book of Merlyn is not part of the original and not worth reading. There's more animal stuff as in Sword in the Stone plus lots of preaching about capitalism and communism. Better off to stick with the original! 10mo
Graywacke Stumbled across this in high school. I remember, vaguely, it being a bit of a curiosity. 10mo

merelybookish @rubyslippersreads I can understand why you love it and re-read it! ♥️ 10mo
merelybookish @Graywacke Did you read it? It's definitely odd but that's part of its charm. 10mo
Graywacke @merelybookish yes. I wasn‘t a reader then, but wanted my extra credit in 10th grade language arts. Read the whole thing. My memories are of a charm sort pulled out of a whole lot of words, like picking out a minor gemstone from the sand. No added Merlin section. (edited) 10mo
ravenlee I started this once and couldn‘t get into it, but I need to give it another try. Someday! 10mo
merelybookish @ravenlee I struggled with the first book about young Wart too. But it definitely picks up once Arthur is king. 10mo
merelybookish @abbielistenstobooks It's all available on hoopla! 10mo

rubyslippersreads @merelybookish I‘m so glad you loved it! 😊 10mo
Centique I‘ve had this on my TBR since reading H is for Hawk. She references White and this book a lot and it fascinated me. 10mo
merelybookish @Centique Yes! I read H is for Hawk as well! So I thought a lot about how White was gay (and unhappy right?) while reading the Once and Future King! 10mo
merelybookish @Centique I couldn't help but think it affected this portrayal of certain characters (women 😬) and relationships. 10mo
Centique @merelybookish I bet it did! I‘m looking forward to reading it after your review 😊 10mo

Hey Leniverse if they don‘t have a replacement for you and you live in the UK I can send you this one I need to clear some shelves as you can probably tell from the photo 🤣🤣

Cover is slightly sun faded and there is small crease in right hand top corner inside is good.

Leniverse Thank you, that's so sweet! 😘 Your book looks a million times better cared for. However, Mr. B and I have decided to start reading the poor ragged thing, (since even the 2nd hand bookstore didn't want it back! 😂) and if we really like it we'll invest in a brand new one and let our daughter upcycle the damaged one into something artsy. 1y

This book was listed as "Very Good" condition. I'll admit that it is spotless inside, but does this cover correspond to "may show some limited signs of wear"? I was so disappointed when I saw it. It's also a different cover image than advertised (stock image for the same ISBN, but this is a reprint). I'm feeling like a difficult customer here, but I'm returning the book. ?

Smrloomis 😳 I would definitely return that and expect a refund. I don‘t think you‘re being difficult. That cover looks terrible! 1y
Leniverse @Smrloomis Have to hand it to customer service. I complained and they offered me 50% refund, or full refund if I return the book. I told them it wasn't about the cost, the cover is just too painful to look at. They immediately replied that they have now refunded the money and please keep the book. I didn't even show them photo evidence! (But now I'm stuck with the ugly book. 😆) Very pleased to avoid the hassle of returning it though. 1y
saresmoore Terrible! I‘m glad customer service was good, but that is pretty irksome. 1y
twohectobooks I try to keep up the attitude that it‘s what‘s inside a book that counts but that is truly a horrendous cover. 1y
Leniverse @twohectobooks The spouse looked at the book and said, "we can read it, I suppose, and then you can donate it... No, I don't know if you could even give that away." ? The consensus is that we're not keeping this in the house. ? 1y

I have mixed reactions with this one. I know this is a satirical version of the Arthurian legend so I was not expecting it to be a serious novel. Everybody knows about King Arthur and his round table. It was made into books, movies and even cartoons. This one was weird. It was nice to see King Arthur in a different light but the first half of the story was weird and confusing. I like the second half better especially the end part.

The best thing for being sad, replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then - to learn.

So I'm going to be spending all day in the car soon and I think I'm going to go with this book for audio. The last audiobook I listened to was Grisham's the client (so it's been a while lol) so I'm a little clueless - is audible a good website for audiobooks? I have no CD player in my car so I'm going to have to download the book. Recommendations?

I featured a quote from this book yesterday, with my folio edition as the pic. This is a different edition, but it's the words that matter, not the window dressing, and White's basis for Merlin and Arthur legend is timeless and fun. A wonderful book.

GeekyJack I bought this book last week. It will be my holiday book for my two week trip to Santorini in August. Can't wait to start it. 2y
Jamesfahyauthor @GeekyJack it's a good choice 👍🏼 and I love Santorini. I visited years back. Beautifully volcanic. If you have time, make sure you book a visit to Akrotiri while you're there. It's a wonderful Bronze Age settlement. It was destroyed in a volcanic eruption but the ash preserved it wonderfully. It's a magical place 👌🏻 2y
