Today‘s author spotlight: Robert Louis Stevenson! Born today in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1850, he died at 44. He married in San Francisco & had no children together. He was good friends with Hawaii‘s King Kalākaua. He was a much-loved advocate of the Samoan people, & his adopted Samoan name was Tusitala, or “Teller of Tales”. They buried him atop Mt. Vaea. He was excluded from literary canon until recent decades. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

LapReader If you are ever in Samoa go visit his house and lush gardens. It‘s stunning and the Samoan guide is so informative and sings a song about him unaccompanied by anything and it‘s very stirring. Would have liked to hike to his grave but we had the kids with us and we don‘t think they would have made it. I‘ll post some pics later and tag you. 1w
MrBook @LapReader Very cool! Please do! 1w
MrsMalaprop That‘s very cool @LapReader 👏. Would you recommend a trip to Samoa, RLS aside? 1w

LapReader Yes @MrsMalaprop it‘s a bright and friendly country. You are forced to relax because everything eventually gets done but at a very slow pace. Our kids got to play with and eat like local kids and we all loved the warm water. The ‘Bali belly‘ not so much. 1w
Leftcoastzen Love this photo of RLS! 1w
Andrew65 A true classic author! 1w
JazzFeathers One of my favourite authors 😍 l often wonder what business did Stevenson have living in the 1800s. He's such a modern author. 7d
JazzFeathers @Leftcoastzen It is a lovely photo. So modern. Like him. 7d

Two Lives | Vikram Seth
post image

Today‘s author spotlight: Vikram Seth! The 67-year-old was born in Calcutta, India. He studied at Oxford & Stanford. He was commissioned by the English National Opera to write a Greek myth-based libretto, which was first performed in 1994. He received a Q9.4 mil advance for his novel “Two Lives”, far more than the 6a8,000 for “A Suitable Boy”. He lives in poet George Herbert‘s former home. He is gay & an activist. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

Amiable LOVED “A Suitable Boy.“ Have been awaiting a sequel! 2w
ljuliel Holy Smokes ! That‘s a lot of money for one book. I know nothing about what authors make, so maybe lots of them get million dollar deals ? 2w
BookFreakOut @ljuliel Based on some discussion I've seen (among YA authors) a more typical advance would be $5000-15,000/book for a debut, the splashy bug deals are uncommon but often more visible. 2w

BookFreakOut @ljuliel *big deals, can't type today! And I believe advances are typically split into 3 payments: contract signed, book delivered, book published. Minus agent percentage if applicable and taxes each time, many say it's hard to quit the day job because the payments are infrequent and you never know what kind of advance the next book might get. 2w
ljuliel Thanks for the info @BookFreakOut . I guess I‘ve never heard anything about dollar amounts. I suppose it‘d depend on the author, how popular, etc. like Stephen King probably gets millions for every book .. it‘d be a great job if you could break through with a bestseller , but hard if you kept writing and never hit it big. 2w
ValerieAndBooks A Suitable Boy is one of my favorites and have been long awaiting the sequel! @ljuliel @BookFreakOut I actually just finished reading a book that covers writers and money and things like how advances work! Very interesting. 2w
ljuliel Thanks. I just put it in my reminder area. @ValerieAndBooks 2w

Fascinating book that makes me want to go back and study biology.

And the really incredible thing: octopuses are color blind! So then how do they do such excellent camouflage? Scientists really don‘t know but theorize they might “see” with their skin.

Clwojick That‘s kind of mind blowing. I love it! 2w

Today‘s author spotlight: Franz Kafka! Born in Prague in 1883, he died at 40 in Austria from tuberculosis. His body of work is so influential, that the term “Kafkaesque” has been coined to describe surreal, disorienting complexity. Though engaged several times, he never married. He wrote in his spare time while working in insurance. Much of his work was published posthumously rather than being burned as he wanted. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

wanderinglynn Can you imagine if they had respected his wishes & burned his work? 😱 2w
Lcsmcat Thanks to him, my husband names every cockroach he finds in the garage Gregor. 2w
MrBook @wanderinglynn Thank goodness they didn‘t! @Lcsmcat 😂👏🏻 2w

#NobelPrize for Literature winner announced! I haven‘t heard of either author before 🙈. What do you think of the recipients‘ works? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wsj.com/amp/articles/nobel-prizes-in-literature...

#LitsyNewsNetwork #LNN #TheMoreYouKnow

ljuliel I‘ve never heard of either one. I think someone needs to invent a Chastity Belt for men that works a bit like those Shock Collars for dogs. Maybe that‘d teach them to keep their danged pants on. It seems that scandals are bleeding over into every area anymore. That‘s why I don‘t watch the news. Ignorance is Bliss. Too depressing. 1mo
