Asking For It
Asking For It | Louise O'Neill
Emma O'Donovan is eighteen, beautiful, and fearless. It's the beginning of summer in a quiet Irish town and tonight she and her friends have dressed to impress. Everyone is at the party, and all eyes are on Emma. The next morning Emma's parents discover her collapsed on the doorstop of their home, unconscious. She is disheveled, bleeding, and disoriented, looking as if she had been dumped there. To her distress, Emma can't remember what happened the night before. All she knows is that none of her friends will respond to her texts. At school, people turn away from her and whisper under their breath. Her mind may be a blank as far as the events of the previous evening, but someone has posted photos of it on Facebook under a fake account, "Easy Emma"--photos she will never be able to forget. As the photos go viral and a criminal investigation is launched, the community is thrown into tumult. The media descends, neighbors chose sides, and people from all over the world want to talk about her story. Everyone has something to say about Emma. Asking For It is a powerful story about the devastating effects of rape and public shaming, told through the awful experience of a young woman whose life is changed forever by an act of violence.

This book sucked me in. It was difficult to read at times, but it‘s real. It‘s heartbreaking that women deal with things like this EVERY DAY. I wanted to hug Emma, take her away from her awful parents, and stand by her. I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ *not an easy read*

Reagan-reads It was a wonderful book, but a very difficult read. 1w
SassyPants617 @Reagan-reads YES! I am into hard to get through books. Idk what that says about me...lol. The ending had me almost disappointed. It I read the afterword and it made sense. It made me ok with the ending. 1w

This is a powerful and difficult read and I advise caution. There is no sugar-coating here and while I hesitate to use the word graphic the scenes of rape are distressing. The story is distressing and O'Neill handles it with the perfect balance of bluntness and sensitivity. Emma's interior monologue is painfully authentic and her inner conflicts cleverly portrayed 👇

Moray_Reads O'Neill has written a hugely important book here, that looks unflinchingly society's attitudes to women and to rape but one of my biggest takeaways is the internalised misogyny displayed by so many of the female characters. Because we do it too, we judge in precisely the places and ways we would most hate to be judged and, ladies, we need to do better and demand better. 2mo
TrishB Great summary, I love- hated this book. And the parents 😡😡😡 2mo
Moray_Reads @TrishB It's really well done but goodness, it's bleak and everyone's determination to do and say anything that made the situation “easier“ was terrifying 2mo
Kalalalatja Perfect review! This is one of the books that inspired me to write my thesis about rape victims decision to report the rape to the police. I got to tell this to O‘Neill last year at a book festival, and she was so nice! 2mo

When Emma O‘Donovan wakes up on her porch, naked and sunburned, #RumorHasIt she acted like a s**t and had sex at a party, while letting the guys take pictures of her. In reality, Emma was taken advantage of, raped, and humiliated, and this book is a look at how a girl reacts to such a treatment.

ElishaLovesBooks Wow, that sounds intense! 7mo
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola @ElishaLovesBooks it is tough, heart breaking, and it made me soooo angry! But, now with some professional insight into the subject as well, everything in the book is just way too common. It is sad, just sad... @ShyBookOwl don‘t let the cover scare you! The MC is described as a very popular, kinda mean girl type, which might explain the cover. Also, O‘Neill‘s other book also had a Barbie on the cover 7mo
ShyBookOwl @Kalalalatja interesting. Thanks! 7mo
Kalalalatja @Mdargusch it actually does have a lot of similarities to the Steubenville case, as far as I remember. Definitely a lot of victim blaming, a lot of shame and self blame, and a bit of loss of faith in humanity, as a reader 😔 7mo
Mdargusch I wonder if that incident motivated this author then? 7mo

Congrats on your milestone @Moray_Reads ???

I‘m trying not to be a cliché, so I‘m not going with P&P. Instead I‘m going with the tagged book, and its namesake by Kate Harding. I read the two books at the same time, and they motivated me to write my master‘s thesis on rape victims, and fuelled my dream of one day working with treatment of rape victims psychological trauma.

#BooksChangeLivesGiveaway

Moray_Reads I have both of these books on your recommendation but haven't been brave enough to read either yet 😣 I really hope they help to start you on your career the way that my choice helped me. Your turn will come. Thanks for entering ❤️ 11mo

I felt like screaming #areyoukiddingme throughout this whole book. It's an insanely frustrating story, very raw, very blatant, and very important. This is rape culture - this is how prevailing it is. It's calling out to us to talk about rape, consent, and the exagerated double standards we have imposed as a society. Stories like these HAVE TO STOP. Thnks @Kalalalatja for recommending it so much!

This wasn‘t an easy or satisfying read, but I think that‘s appropriate, given the content. It made me angry and distressed, as it should. I liked that the protagonist wasn‘t a ‘good‘ or even particularly likeable character. I appreciated that the wrongdoers weren‘t overtly evil, but recognisable, ‘good boys who got carried away‘. We have so much work to do. I look forward to more by Louise O‘Neill.

JennAndrew @Cinfhen they‘re two very different types of YA. Only Ever Yours is a dystopian future fantasy type, but Asking For It is more contemporary fiction that has teenage characters. If you‘re not into YA, I‘d go for AFI, although it is a difficult topic. 2y

There was something about all of these books which made me realize just how #vulnerable I am. As a woman, as a young person living in the world today, and just in general. I feel like hiding under the covers sometimes, and never come out. But most of these books also portray the strenght we humans are capable of, which is why I eventually come out from under the covers and confront the world.

The MC is awful-manipulative and self centered-but the book wouldn't have had the same impact if you liked her. It makes important points about a tough subject. Sometimes, the people that #livetotell don't want to tell their stories about the awful things that have happened to them. Emma O'Donovan definitely doesn't want to talk about the assault she can barely remember, because she'll be blande for the whole thing. Sadly, this is the truth for many women (and men) who experience sexual assaults.

I keep raving about these three books, but in my opinion, they're all really important reads.

Emma is gorgeous and knows it.

She gets drunk at a party and her parents find her unconscious on the front steps when they return from an overnight trip. She is bruised and doesn't remember how she got home.

Before long, she sees a Facebook page with photos showing her being gang-raped. Of course, the page is full of vile comments about what a whore she is.

This novel will haunt me for a very long time.... It's a bold choice to write this in the first person. Emma is a mean girl, cruel to her closest friends and obsessed with her appearance and being known as the prettiest of all. And then she is the victim of a horrific gang-rape and social media campaign of humiliation and torture by her small Irish town and by the media. A gut-wrenching, enraging and brutal look at our culture of victim-blaming.

My go at #spinepoetry for #MarchIntoReading 📚

Not that kind of girl,
-Asking for it
Hidden figures,
-Asking for it
The secret history (o)f how to be both
Fates and furies, Shadow and bone
Bodies of water,
Fragile things.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'm going to assume by the cover that book is not actually about dinosaurs on other planets. If only... 3y

Pickpick

Wow, I finished this last time and am still reeling! What a book. So powerful, sad, anger-inducing. I was saddened by the ending, but not surprised when you think what happens in real life. I think the hardest part for me was how Emma's parents behaved. Bryan and Conor seemed like the only caring characters really. This is the kind of book everyone should read as it has really made me think about how we are all so quick to have an opinion.

Kalalalatja I felt the same way - I was so mad when I finished the book! 3y
Laru79 @Kalalalatja I honestly think I'll be ranting about it for quite a while! When I returned it to my library today, a colleague took it out straight away based on my rants!! Hopefully that's good. It'll be a real talking point once she's finished 3y

And so, on to this. I've wanted to read this for a while. I'm expecting some great writing and characters who will bring out some strong emotions!
