The story of an Australian woman's year in Hanoi teaching English and perving on Vietnamese men. There was a lot to enjoy in the book, but quite a lot of it made me uncomfortable too. Towards the end she complains of wealthy expats whose conversation is largely gossip about other expats and "if mentioned at all, the locals feature like pets". That is sort of how I felt about the book. A pick with reservations. #booked2020 #setinindiasouthernasia

Cinfhen Great review 😊 4y
Anna40 Yes. Great review 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Hmmm. Since I‘m married to an Asian American, I‘ll bet this would make me a little uncomfortable too. 4y

A compelling and moving book that depicts the lives of the powerless during the State of Emergency in India, mid 1970s. I was outraged by many parts- the cruel caste system, corruptions, violent deaths, and oppressive government policies attacking the poor and homeless such as slums wipe-out, forced sterilisations.. ⬇️

erzascarletbookgasm ..(continue) The vast cast of characters are very interesting and I had come to love the four protagonists. It‘s a tough, bleak read but beautifully written with wisdom, humanity, hope, and even humour despite the horrors. All the ⭐️s. 4y
Cinfhen Our bookclub read this years ago... it was universally loved but not an easy read. I almost bailed so many times because of it‘s length and heavy subject matter but the others kept encouraging me to finish. The book I couldn‘t finish was 4y
MrsMalaprop Wonderful book 📖❤️😭😍. 4y

Butterfinger It was a hard book for me. I was so depressed by the time I got to the end. 4y

LeahBergen A great review of a wonderful book. 💙💙 4y
ljuliel Excellent book . 4y
erzascarletbookgasm @Amiable thanks! I‘m glad I picked this chunkster. Can we start another big book for the challenge? 4y
Amiable @erzascarletbookgasm Sure! You can do as many as you want! 🙂 My only goal with creating this challenge was to encourage people to read —and finish—those big books that might seem intimidating. Spread the chunkster love! 😀 (edited) 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen And I really loved Shantaram. But it was LOooooooNNNgg. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @erzascarletbookgasm This sounds somewhat like another depressing but important book about Indian people. 4y
Cinfhen Behind the Beautiful Forevers is a beautiful book @BarbaraTheBibliophage @erzascarletbookgasm but it‘s an #InfiniteTissueRead 😭😭 4y

Aghhh, what a bloody heartbreaking book 💔💔
Couldn‘t put it down though and loved these two ‘girls‘
Have an issue with the ending though!!! 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Thanks Emma 😘

Kalalalatja It is so good! What was your problem with the ending?? 4y
TrishB @Kalalalatja just seemed a bit too abrupt! And not clear. I shall probably read the ending again in the morning. But a great read. I felt so angry and sad all the way through. 4y
Kalalalatja Ah, now I remember! It definitely was abrupt, I‘ll give you that! And it is that kind of book that makes you sad of the state of the world... 4y

MelissaSue81 I felt the exact same way! I listened to the entire audiobook in one day around this time last year. So heartbreaking but I loved it, if that makes sense? 4y
JennyM I have had this on my TBR for a while after seeing similar reviews. I might need to bump it up 4y
Cinfhen Should I try it again??? Maybe I‘ll try it on audio 4y
TrishB @MelissaSue81 I know exactly what you mean! 4y
TrishB @JennyM it‘s sad, but I loved the two main characters anyway ❤️ 4y
TrishB @Cinfhen only if you‘re in the mood I‘d say. Not sure if it would be worse on audio 🤷‍♀️ 4y
Centique On my TBR - I‘ll have to have tissues at the ready it seems! 😢 4y
Cathythoughts Sounds really good Trish ! Stacked 4y
TrishB @Centique and you‘ll get heart ache! 4y
TrishB @Cathythoughts tough but good 👍🏻 4y
Andrew65 You‘ve intrigued me enough to make me want to read it. 4y
TrishB @Andrew65 hope you like it 👍🏻 4y
eraderneely I loved the ending! So much of the book was about their journey to find each other, but ending it with their reunion would have been too wrapped up with a neat bow and there is no way the author could have written a reunion to meet my expectations, but now I can imagine it however I want. 4y
TrishB @eraderneely I think I‘ve come round to that today! Nothing would have met my expectations either! 4y
Caroline2 I hated the ending!! The last quarter felt like a completely different book then that ending....?! What a cop out. 🙄 4y

This was a crafty little story. In a rural clinic in India an overworked & underpaid Dr is faced with a moral dilemma that will leave you questioning what you‘ve just read. Would make for excellent book club discussion. #pop20 #MedicalThriller #Booked2020 #SetInIndiaSouthernAsia #ARC #NetGalley Not for the medically squeamish

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m glad to see a review for this. It was in an email from Catapult recently and intrigued me. 4y
