Jack Aubrey invites Stephen Maturin to become his ship's doctor/surgeon in 1800.

It is certainly a steep learning curve as the author makes no concessions to readers' ignorance of naval terminology and practice of the period. There were definitely times when I had no idea what was going on. it certainly throws into relief how much other authors play down the strangeness of the past.

This was a re-read,and I meant to go directly on to the second book...oops... but it‘s on the TBR for 2022. Still, I really enjoyed this revisit. Knowing I wouldn‘t understand all the nautical terms allowed me to relax and just appreciate the adventure of it all. And it is riveting. Even though I remembered what happened in general, I was holding my breath for those tense moments when Captain Aubrey and crew were in peril.

Read this while glacier watching. If you are into all things nautical, this is the book for you. If you are don‘t know anything about boats or the English Navy, it is a much harder go.

Been a pretty busy week, so I haven't been able to post about last weekend's Literacy Association #booksale .

Have been wanting to get into this series, but the titles can vary in price (have seen some as high as $7), so when I had the opportunity to get a dozen of them at $2 a pop, I leapt at it.

I can‘t recall if it‘s this book or the one after, but Jack Aubrey is court marshaled and has to vindicate himself out of a tight spot.

Revisiting. Now with grounding in 18th-19th century nautical terms. Much more enjoyable this time.

The British Navy is where several young dudes were during the Napoleonic war!

This is the first book in a huge, well loved series. It follows the adventures of a Naval captain and his friend, a surgeon, during Napoleon times. Good pick for anyone who likes action with some humour thrown in

Hmm, not quite sure. I think I found the nautical parts quite difficult to follow, although I am willing to give more of the series a try as I think the characters were interesting.

Many a #mtbr 🏔️ to read but I've fallen into a bit of a slump again, so it's weird choices again. Found this on Scribd, meant to read it since reading a Guardian article by a woman who was more of a Jane Austen reader but thought the books were really good.

April, 1800. Minorca. Jack Aubrey has just been given command of a sloop, the Sophie, and met his hetero life-mate Dr Maturin. Due to “Goldilocks” Aubrey‘s gleeful (and in some way I can‘t put my finger on, extremely endearing) greed and cleverness he racks up an impressive number of wins against the French and Spanish. Then loses everything. Luckily there are many many more books to go.

Loved these guys and the flair of O‘Brian‘s writing.

And now for something completely different on audio...

I started listening to this while packing my kiddo‘s lunchbox for tomorrow and those were some ultra-charming character introductions right there.

My favorite movie of all time. And then, just last year, I found out it was based on a book! And then. Oh AND THEN! I found out it's not *a* book, but a TWENTY-ONE book series!
Reading (and listening to) book one brought me right back into my favorite story, except now there's more details, more backstory, more jokes. There was a lot of jargon, to be sure, but I love Stephen Maturin almost as much as Rhy Maresh, so... I lived with it :P

Today marks my 12 month anniversary of living on our yacht SV Roam! To honour the occasion starting today and on the 4th of each month I will be reading one Master and Commander book until I get through the series.

Land ho! In the background you can see the southern toes of Italy's coastline and I am on night watch. It's also a bit nippy out, looking forward to getting the ⚓ down later today!

Here is my progress in the #litsyreadingchallenge2017 . I suspect I will complete the down the middle column before any of the others. I love these reading challenges.

Oh boy- I could not possible go any further outside my normal comfort zone than this book! But I have always been curious about this series, so why not...

I have had such a sickening of men in masses, and of causes, that I wouldn't cross this room to reform Parliament or prevent the Union or to bring about the Millennium. I speak only for myself, mind - it is my own truth alone - but man as part of a movement or a crowd is indifferent to me. He is inhuman .... The only feelings I have - for what they are - are for men as individuals; my loyalties, such as they may be, are to private persons alone.

This is my AWESOME hardback version of 'Master and Commander' but I've never come across this kind of paper cutting before. Is it intentional, my LITSY friends, or is it a major error in printing?? It makes the book look older than it is, which is great, but is it meant to be like this? I've never seen it before...

I love me some Aubrey/ Maturin. Also Wild West Holmes, Bernard Shaw (hands down my fav playwright; I have multiple copies of all his plays), and a collection of plays by Wasserstein, Norman, Churchill & more. This is a very me pile of books. Jasper also approves.
