Beneath the Sugar Sky | Seanan McGuire

A stand-alone fantasy tale from Seanan McGuire's Alex-award winning Wayward Children series, which began in the Alex and Nebula Award-winning, Hugo and Locus finalist, Tiptree Honor List Every Heart a Doorway Beneath the Sugar Sky, the third book in McGuire's Wayward Children series, returns to Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children in a standalone contemporary fantasy for fans of all ages. At this magical boarding school, children who have experienced fantasy adventures are reintroduced to the "real" world. When Rini lands with a literal splash in the pond behind Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children, the last thing she expects to find is that her mother, Sumi, died years before Rini was even conceived. But Rini can’t let Reality get in the way of her quest – not when she has an entire world to save! (Much more common than one would suppose.) If she can't find a way to restore her mother, Rini will have more than a world to save: she will never have been born in the first place. And in a world without magic, she doesn’t have long before Reality notices her existence and washes her away. Good thing the student body is well-acquainted with quests... A tale of friendship, baking, and derring-do. Warning: May contain nuts. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

This continuation of Every Heart a Doorway picks up after the murders at Eleanor West‘s Home for Wayward Children, a school for kids who found doorways to other worlds that felt like home and have now been cast back into ours.

A timey-wimey problem means some students must break the school‘s “No quests” rule and travel to the Land of the Dead and from there to a land of soda seas and brownie soil.

I loved it, maybe even more than the 1st 2.

I really enjoyed this, particularly how it gave more details on how the magical worlds work and how people go to worlds that suit them! Cora is a sweetheart and I was very happy with the ending

From the third volume in the Wayward Children series, which I just finished tonight. The book definitely isn't a standalone, since you need at least Every Heart a Doorway to make sense of it, but it makes a good addition to the ongoing series.

Still catching up on reviews from my vacation last week. I loved this third installment of McGuire‘s utterly unique series of novellas. It has less of the bleakness of the second one, and more of the original characters from the first one. Can‘t wait to read the fourth one.

Pic is from one of the highest points on the walls of Dubrovnik, which I walked last Wednesday 🇭🇷

I‘m still really loving the Wayward Children series. In book three, we‘re back at the school. Some old faces and a couple new ones embark on a quest of mind bending proportions. I loved the characters, but the plot itself was a little out there. Still, a lovely addition to the series.

Marina_h The first book was my favourite but I love this cover 😍 3mo

thebluestocking @Marina_h It is stunning. I think the first two in the series are tied as my favorites. 3mo

"Sometimes that‘s all you can do. Just keep getting through until you don‘t have to do it anymore, however much time that takes, however difficult it is."

3rd book in the series. Definitely enjoyed it, although #2 is still my favorite. There are many fantastic reviews of these books. If you love a good fairy tale these would be right up your alley!

I'm waiting for book #4 on Overdrive and found out book #5 is set to release in 2020. ?

JSW I need to get on this series!! 4mo

Oh my god, I can‘t deal with this series! I enjoy it so much! And this addition was no exception! ❤️❤️ I love the inclusivity that Seanan McGuire puts into all of her characters and the wonderfully imaginative worlds all of the children come from.

This has been my least fav in the series so far. I still think it‘s worth a read because I think the whole series is fantastic! Each one has been so different. McGuire has a lot to say & I think the world needs to hear more voices like hers! Cora, one of the newbies to the story, was someone I could relate to in terms of how she deals with societies issues with her weight. It was also great to have Kade back! 😁

I forgot how much I love the whimsy and magical possible-ness of this series. Too bad I keep getting headaches that make it nearly impossible to read 😞 Hoping the Tylenol will kick in soon so I can keep reading.

Now that “work” here in Sydney is officially done - visited two schools that cater to students with special needs (St Lucy‘s and Mater Dei) and hosted by the Centre for Disability Studies at the University of Sydney over the past couple of days, I am now trawling King Street hunting down off-kilter bookshops and coffee places, this being one of them: Parliament On King.

LauraBeth This looks perfect and delicious! I also love that pretty plate! 6mo
Lindy @LauraBeth The taste was fine, but I was disappointed that my purple yam cake turned teal green when it was baked. I will experiment with cream of tartar to raise the acidity next time, in hopes of maintaining a violet hue. 6mo
ReadingEnvy @Lindy it's the only one of the series I've liked and it's definitely because of being a baker and being in the mood for silly. 6mo
ReadingEnvy Another thing that can change colors is egg yolk, plus purple might make a green... I've never attempted Battenburg though so color me impressed no matter the color. 6mo
Lindy @ReadingEnvy Maybe the egg yolks, but recipes for Filipino ube cake have lots of eggs and they turn out vivid purple. The batter for my purple yam cake was a medium shade of violet before baking. Recipes for Filipino ube cake call for violet food colouring, but I didn‘t have any. 6mo

If I were a Wayward Child, I'd probably go to a land of High Logic - no nonsense for me! So maybe that's why I didn't enjoy this one? I want to love this series so bad and book two was phenomenal, but books one and three were duds for me. Shattered.

A day spent mostly in bed due to a nasty cold meant that I snuggled up with this one. I always love Seanan's writing- this one was no different. She just has a magical ability to draw you into her worlds in a way not many authors get to for me. I loved this one, too, and I'm really excited that the next installment is coming in January. This series might top the October Daye series for me now, which says something for sure! Read on my #nook

This is probably being used a lot today for #CandyLand! It‘s such a perfect fit. This is the 3rd novella in the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire, set mostly in a confectionary world, complete with candy corn farmers and a strawberry soda sea. I preferred the first two installments, but enjoyed this one as well—the series offers refreshingly modern takes on fairy tale tropes, with a cast of wonderfully diverse characters. #SeasonsReadings

🍭A wonderful tale of unique & nonsensical adventure.
🍭Beautiful setting & scenery that‘s akin to world in Wreck-It Ralph.
🍭Excellent rep of fat character, a trans character, & other diverse ppl.
🍭Discusses harmful stereotypes of fat ppl.
🍭Focuses on family, friendship, fitting in, & loss.
🍭Has some of the most amusing conversation between characters across all 3 books (so far).
🍭Gave me serious sugar munchies.
🍭Sweetly feel-good.
🍭4/5.

Book three in the Wayward Children series—I wasn‘t quite as enthralled this time around. This felt a bit more disconnected to me, with several disparate characters joining forces on a quest through several portal worlds. I preferred the depth in book two that came from focusing on one world and just a couple characters. I did like the way this followed on from book one, though—and I‘m definitely looking forward to the next one when it‘s released!

I have liked every single book in this series so much. This one does have a heavier girl in it and there is obviously some real issues like name calling, but, she is handles it so well and she's a strong and awesome character.
